NBC Sports puts picture of Cal with “sleaze” headline

Your Cal haters of the day: Rob Dauster and NBC Sports.

Last week, Rob Dauster wrote about the third-party recruiting debate stirred up by Ken Caldwell and the University of Central Florida. The article explored how corrupt college basketball recruiting has become and shocker, Dauster included Cal in the the company of “these guys” who are so hard to catch:

It’s a thought that has crossed my mind many times. I don’t spend nearly as much time in recruiting circles as lot of the more well-known writers and I’ve heard numerous rumors about Recruit X getting Y amount of dollars from Coach Z. I’m sure there are guys out there that can detail you precise figures for all of the transactions that have occurred over the last decade. How much did OJ Mayo get from USC? Why is John Calipari cornering the market on the blue-chip recruit? What amount of money did it take for Adidas to keep Shabazz Muhammad in the family?

Dauster quoted an article Gary Parrish wrote on the subject in which Parrish discussed the recruitment of the Harrison twins, and why Kentucky and Maryland were the perceived favorites for the pair:

Because Kentucky is Kentucky and John Calipari is John Calipari, and those two entities have a way of getting things done. And because Maryland is the alma mater of Kevin Plank, who is the CEO of Under Armour, which is the company that outfits Maryland’s athletic department and this summer funded the Harrison twins, both of whom are consensus top-10 prospects.”

Okay, fine, whatever. Maryland seems to be getting an edge because of their association with Under Armour and Kentucky has an edge because they have Cal, fifteen players in the pros in three years, and a National Championship. I’m sure Parrish was probably implying more, but for him, that’s pretty tame.

Dauster used Parrish’s passage as more evidence that the recruiting game is inherently “sleazy” and instead of putting a picture of Caldwell with the article, he (or his editor) popped in a picture of Cal, so that on the NBC Sports’ College Basketball Talk page, this is what you see:

Sigh. Haters gonna hate.

Cal is an excellent recruiter because he knows what he is doing, he does what he knows, he prepares well and pursues his goals with passion and energy. This approach produces excellence.

Too many journalist are inept for the opposite reasons. They don’t know what they are doing, they do discovery poorly, preparation is missing, and they are lackluster in their search for truth. This results in Tabloid Truth.

You cannot be that blind to not think that getting all these recruits is because we are UK and Cal is Cal. To get this many top players in a class the ones that no matter where they go will make it to the league. You have to be a total idiot to think palms are not greased remember the movie Blue Chips,it still happens.Don’t be blind all your lives!

Hey Mr. Dauster, Than = A F’ing comaprison; Then = a F’ing point in time. You are presumably a paid writer for a major network’s website, so if you don’t mind, could you please use proper grammar when publishing incendiary and unsubstantiated remarks about those far more successful THAN you?

    Amazing,
For all the losers that can’t compete, it has to be cheating, not their ineptitude, to explain the gap between them and Coach Cal and UK. Jealously will not let them admit that Cal has developed a system that Players develop their skills in. The really talented players thrive in it. Plus. Cal has done something that had been impossible to do,get that talent to play as one and follow his coaching. Non jealous observers have spoke of his ability with respect in the last three years. Only the little petty ones can’t handle it.

Allow me to beg your indulgence and educate you hicks. I’ll give you a prime example. Terrence Jones’ best friend from his high school served as the “bag man.” The kid came from a very poor background. Yet, he was able to afford a nice Benz and an education all the way across the country. He also had pictures of himself with thousands of dollars and hundreds of pairs of shoes. Guys like him or in some cases, family, get things funneled to them. Cal is not stupid. He uses guys like Wes and other slimy people. Even your Lord and savior, But Cut Bangs knows he is a scumbag cheater. Get your face out of Cal’s lap. Didn’t you simpletons notice that his friend left town and dropped out right after the car wreck. UK made him leave. That is why Jones had his head up his [email protected] during the IU game. Wake up!

We will hear this throughout Cal’s time here. It don’t let it bother me because I know the NCAA would be all over him by now if that has happened at Kentucky. The part that really gets me though is all this negativity with the media, and how it is only being directed at Cal himself when there have been numerous coaches who have done way worse and have been caught.

We dodged a bullet on the Bledsoe deal. We were lucky that people at his HS would not talk (in order to save their jobs). Bledsoe had no business in school. That is pretty obvious. Hopefully, the NCAA does not try to make up for that gift.

  33. its true, its true

Florida, with Richard pitino, was the hottest after bledsoe at the time in question. Several other top schools along with Florida did not stop recruiting Eric. They kept after him even when UK got involved. So those issues didn’t scare them off. Doesn’t seem to give creedence to the tampering fog.
For everyone of the academic purity, holier than thou judges, affecting shock and indignation at Erics’ improvement of grades, step out of your glass house and look at a kid that wasn’t sure of where he and his family would be sleeping but if they would eat. I’m sure all of you pulled yourselves up by your own bootstraps, but so did Eric.
No streach of believabilty that yours or my grades/testing. Would improve with a home and meals. Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry have been taught out of sequence especially for kids commingled from different systems. The REAL PROBLEM is that Eric didn’t play for your team and that he completed a year of College. Oh yeah, the guy that some feel so mentally superior to is making more money than they will ever sniff. I bet Eric breaks the poverty cycle and his kids make it in school
