Thursday night is one of my favorite evenings of the year. For sheer entertainment and good times, there is nothing that beats the NBA Draft. The suits, the baby mamas, the bling, the upside, it all equals a night that simply cannot be topped. The Sports Guy started doing Draft Diaries many years ago and they are without question, his best overall columns. Along those lines, we began doing Draft Live Blogs four years ago and I still think they are the best live blogs that we do. Thursday night will be another example. Beginning at 7:30 pm, we Live Blog the Draft, watching and commenting. The crew will be there, me, Beisner, Drew, Turkey Hunter, Tomlin, etc, along with some other non-regulars like Will, Chris Johns, Kate Martin, BTI, Hunter and others. And then there are the special guests, Bomani, Tucker Max, Gregg Doyel, Buzz Baker and potentially a couple of surprises joining. It should be a great evening, so I hope you join us for the event.
Lots went on today, so lets hit it:
— The story of the afternoon was the precipitous fall of Daniel Orton, not just on Draft boards, but in the minds of UK fans. Yahoo Sports produced a column that stated that NBA GMs have been told by Orton that he wishes he had gone to Kansas instead of Kentucky. Coming on the heels of his decision not to finish his classes at UK and thus hurt the team’s APR, this does little to make UK fans feel an embrace to the 3 PPG player. Then came the second part of the story, which may even be more difficult for the big fella….his stock is slipping. Yahoo said he might even slip to the end of the first round, or worse. All in all, a bad day for Orton andone that for his sake, will hopefully will be bettered on Thursday.
— John Wall saw his Reebok world take off today. His shoes were released for the first time, with most telling me that they are “ugly, but I will buy them anyway.” He then saw his first commercial released to the public as well late in the evening. John Wall will be a star on the court, but he is also showing that he will be unstoppable off of it as well. The marketing phenomenon of Wall is just beginning.
— The Drake party was scheduled for tonight. Our man Ramel is supposed to be on the scene reporting..we will see if it makes an appearance in his blog tomorrow. John Calipari tweeted out Ramel’s blog for KSR today, which I know made him very happy as he becomes a budding sports blogger.
— Speaking of Calipari, he spent today in Haiti giving out shoes as part of the distribution process for the funds raised by his Hoops for Haiti campaign. Footage was taken of some of the trip and my guess is that we will hear lots more about this after the Draft. A great event that hopefully doesnt get lost in the other news of the day.
— Speaking of news of the day, the Herald Leader had news….of last week. Today they had the John Wall Washington Post piece on the front page of their paper….which of course ran in the Post on Sunday and has been debated all over the internet on every day since. And people wonder why newspapers are dying…run a story that everyone under the age of 60 has already read (and those over 60 that get on the computer) as your #1 story of the day. Why not just run a game report from the UK-Cornell game?
— I said it before, but there are few things in sports that match that US Soccer game today. If you didnt scream out (or at least text out) GOOOOOAAALLLLL when Donovan scored…well check your pulse and make sure you are still kicking. What a sports moment.
— On the football side of things, Kentucky got another commitment, this time from Texas LB Blake Terry. While Terry’s list of schools interested wasnt the most impressive lot in the world (and my theory on Football recruiting is that you can tell a recruit’s true worth by the schools going after him, more than his star rating), he does have…what kids? Speed. Thats the name of the game….for Joker its speed, speed and more speed. We may not win football, but we could win track. The class is filling up and it looks to be stellar.
— Rick Pitino….just wanted to say his name, because you sure wont hear it as part of anything to do with the NBA Draft.
— Some bad news from late in the night as Micah Johnson was cut by the NY Giants. Micah is still struggling to find a position in the NFL but I know he was excited about his opportunity with the Giants. I hope he catches on with another team and gets a shot, as he was a great Wildcat.
— If you are in Louisville and looking for something to do on Thursday night, go to the NBA DRAFT PARTY at Big Blue Country on Baxter Avenue. They are having all kinds of specials and the beer gets cheaper everytime a UK player is picked…and that will happen a lot. So go check them out if you arent live blogging with us….or take your computer and do both. An NBA Draft with KSR and other fans at Big Blue Country wouldnt be bad at all.
Its going to be a HUGE day around KSR tomorrow. News all day and the NBA DRAFT LIVE BLOG at 7:30 pm. Dont miss it on one of the best days of the year for KSR and the best NBA Draft for UK in the school’s history.
