As we enjoy the glow of Coach Cal telling us he’ll be around at least another year, we can resume looking at what the future may hold for Kentucky’s now draft-departed fivesome. Andy Katz polled ‘decision makers’ from ten NBA teams to get a feel for who they believe should be taken in the lottery ahead of Tuesday’s draw for draft position. Not surprisingly, John Wall was the unanimous #1 pick. Boogie was also in the consensus top five, and even grabbed a few votes for the #2 spot, which was held by Evan Turner. Derrick Favors and Wes Johnson were the others in the top five.
The most interesting note is that, despite being unanimously selected #1 by those polled, John Wall may not be an absolute slam dunk to be the top pick. All the executives said that if the Utah Jazz, who own the Knicks’ first pick, were to win the lottery, they would not take Wall because of the presence of arguably the best point guard in the league, Deron Williams. Instead, they would likely go with Favors or even Cousins in order to pair a big man with Williams, with the likely departure of Carlos Boozer via free agency leaving a vacancy in the post for Utah.
Patrick Patterson, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe also were named on several of the ballots, and although they didn’t end up as consensus lottery picks according to the execs, it would appear that all three are virtual locks for the first round. And, if they’re not going to be suiting up for the Cats next year, that’s what we’re rooting for. So good news is going around and hopefully there will be more to come this weekend. For this Friday night, though, please go find something better to do than read this post. I insist.
