Naming rights could be sold for Rupp Arena

rupp-arena

According to Jerry Tipton, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray said this morning that while he wants “Rupp Arena” to still be the name of UK’s renovated basketball arena, there is a possibility that it could be “[Business name] Rupp Arena” if naming rights are sold, which is still to be determined.

Former UK coach and Lexington Center Board Member Joe B. Hall told Tipton: “It can always be ‘Something-Rupp Arena. This program is Adolph Rupp’s program. He built it…It could be Alltech Rupp Arena. It could be the Ashland Rupp Arena. It could be the IBM Rupp Arena. Whatever.”

The press conference about the new Rupp Arena starts in thirty minutes. We’ll have a livestream up shortly.

I don’t agree with this. Look at all the other historic venues in college basketball. Do you honestlrthink Cameron indoor to vagisil Cameron indoor? Or Pauley pavilion to sell out to tampex Pauley pavilion? You have a historic name and to disgrace that with advertising a business infront of that name is blasphemy. No I wont revoke my bbn card if they do this but I just don’t think its right

Let’s see, sell naming rights for several million dollars or leave that money on the table so we can have higher ticket prices and less revenue?

I vote for selling naming rights.

Naming rights must happen in order to get the kind of financing we’ll need to rebuild. If you want a state-of-the-art facility, you’re going to need corporate sponsorship in order to make it happen. The rest of the downtown plan, the Arts & Entertainment District, will help to encourage stronger foot traffic, visitor presence, local business, and ……. drum roll …… TAX REVENUE. Tax revenue is huge, folks. The building of this arena will likely take advantage of Tax Increment Financing (TIFs), which borrow from future tax revenues generated from new improvements. It all has to work together in order to happen, and it seems to me that the Task Force, Mayor’s office, and Governor’s office seem to understand this. I have confidence that all will work out. Everyone needs to relax — everything will be fine. We will get the arena we want, with the surrounding district to help support the new arena’s existence.

For one, this article is about basketball. You know, that’s the sport you play with a round ball instead of that funny looking one in that sport you’re talking about, football.

Second, Poops? Seriously? I remember when I thought saying poop was really funny. Then when I moved onto second grade it got way less amusing. Sadly, I fear you’re probably about 30

UK would have to go outside of the city of Lexington, since there is no REAL major corporations in the city. The biggest thing that is close by would be Toyota in Georgetown.

It would be a political Disaster for the Mayor, and a Public Relations Nightmare for the company who dared go on an ego trip and put their name above that of a legend. The only one that might not create an outrage is Coors, Adolph Rupp Arena. Something might also be worked out with Adolph’s if they drop the Meat Tenderizer part. Ultimately, this is a seriously bad idea.

Naming rights will be sold. At least they keep Rupp Arena in the name – that way when companies change – they have the common thread. It is better than just __company name__ Arena. At least people will know it is still Rupp if the name changes.

When Enron went belly up, I had no idea where the Astros played (still don’t). If Yumm goes belly up or just decides it no longer want to pay to be associated with UL, then they have to change the name of the arena entirely. At least we can keep Rupp Arena at the end.
