University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Mossakowski gone?

The rumor mill started churning this afternoon as whispers that Kentucky quarterback Ryan Mossakowski has decided to transfer from the program gained traction.  I contacted his father this morning and have asked around but have received no official confirmation.  WLEX, though, says that their sources are telling them that Mossakowski has cleaned out his locker and decided to transfer.

Mossakowski is a former four-star recruit and was rated as the second-strongest arm in the class of 2009, behind only USC’s Matt Barkley.  He redshirted his freshman season after shoulder surgery and was expected to play for the baseball team this spring and battle for the starting quarterback position with Morgan Newton.  He chose UK over Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M in 2009 and would most likely head to a JuCo and then take another stab at the recruiting process.

UPDATE:  Mossakowski’s father confirms has confirmed that he is transferring.

Probably good on his part – who knows if he or Newton will be the best quarterback – but Joker doesn’t seem like one who wants to platoon at that position.

I’ve heard the the Russell kid out of Anderson County who went to EKU – has transferred to UK and was told QB woudl be his position? Any news on that?

That kid is big and strong – not sure if he’s SEC caliber or not – Just wondering.

No problem. If he isn’t confident that he can beat Morgan Newton for the job, then he shouldn’t be here. I just hope he doesn’t go to somewhere like Arkansas and pass for 4,000 yards in a couple seasons.

  21. I would have liked to have seen him play in the bowl game. Morgan has not showed much, and it was 6-6 team anyway, so why not give him a chance to show what he can do. All season he was on the sideline with headphones on signaling in the plays, while Newton just wore a baseball cap.

I would honestly take an 0-10 season this year, if it would expedite the process of getting Joke(r) “gone”. Not getting Mossakowski any quality time while he was there, and not redshirting Newton this year, are just 2 of the MANY inexcusable mistakes he’s made as HC. Don’t get me started on the in-game coaching errors either…

Next year, not being able to play after transferring is no worse than wasting a year sitting behind a no talent scrub like Hartline. Both these kids should have bolted last year if they had any sense. Joker is not going to get many 4 star kids if they have to sit behind 1 to 2 star kids just because they’ve been here longer. Get a clue Joker and play the talent and they will eventually have experience. UK could of had a really seasoned QB for this year but Joker said Hartline was the key to getting to the next level in the conference. 6-7. I promise you, the record would not have been any worse with Newton or Moss getting snaps. They say that Newton does not know all the plays. Well, news flash, he’s been at UK going on three years. If he doesn’t know enough plays to lead the team and go through his progressions by now something is wrong!!!! After all, Cam Newton was just a freshman and knew enough plays to not only win the SEC but the National title as well. Joker get your head out of your a$$, stop playing the guys you like, and start playing the kids with the most talent or plenty more kids will follow Moss, or they may not come at all. Another step backward under Operation Can’t Win!

I can’t believe the crap I’m reading in these comments. If this kid was that good, he would have been starting. Fact of the matter is, the coaches didn’t think he gave UK the better chance to win. They didn’t think Newton was the better QB to win. Hartline was who Joker felt was the best QB to win games this year. Just because you don’t like the current starting QB doesn’t mean the back up is any better. Trust your coach. They get paid to win, if they don’t win, they get fired. You can’t honestly think that Joker started the QB that wouldn’t give his team the best chance to win. That is just stupid.

Face it, Hartline was the best option UK had.

Hard to blame him when Joker will not even give him a series in a blowout loss bowl game! Right decision if you ask me. The clock is ticking on next season. If we have a quarterback that can only average 17 points a game, we will be lucky to win 4 games even if our defense is great. Unless a miracle changes Newton or someone else steps up, we are going to be terrible next year!

All my worst nightmares are slowly being realized. This seriously puts me in a bad mood. Hope we enjoy our 4.8 40 “scrambling” quarterback with absolutely no accuracy and half the arm of Moss. But he’s black so that means all the simple-minded rednecks will at least perceive that he’s Michael Vick. And he was a four-star coming of out high school and that translates exactly the same way in football as it does in basketball, right? Let the new head coach search begin in November when we’re 3-6 (including one loss to Louisville) with a legitimate shot to lose the last three.

This is driving me crazy people acting like Hartline was sooo bad. Behind Newton and Mallet he was the third best QB in the best conference in the nation. Everybody acts like just because he was a highly rated recruit that it always translates to college success, well I’ve got news for you Micah Johnson was a five star supposedly one of the best recruits we’ve ever landed and where is he, couldn’t even get drafted. Newton was also a four-star prospect and he hasn’t lit the world on fire. Moss also had major shoulder surgery and people don’t realize how hard it is to come back from it if your job is to throw the football. I really like the way this kid carries himself and if he decides to transfer wish him well. But maybe he doesn’t feel he can beat out Newton, maybe he can’t grasp the system, who knows. The coaches see him in practice every time and they know how to evaluate QB’s better than people leaving comments. Instead of constantly being negative let’s acknowledge the step that UK football has taken forward and give Joker some time to get his players in and hopefully take another step. One more step and maybe UK will build some football facilities so we can be on level ground with the rest of the SEC. Anyway, I hope Moss stays but if whats best for him is to go where there’s less competition so he doesn’t have to battle a job than he doesn’t need to be here anyway.

And for the record, I don’t want Joker gone. I think he has the potential from a recruiting and overall change of pace standpoint to help us sustain and even climb in the national scene, even more so in the SEC. It’s just that I don’t feel a quarterback of Morgan Newton’s skill set in our offense gives us the best chance to win. People have to fear the pass in order to bring the rush, and they need to bring the rush in order for the screen game to work. Newton’s game fails to make the other team fear the deepball or even the passing game in general.

The staff has to decide what style they want. I know Joker likes and wants the pro style. I don’t think Newton ran a pro style in high school so something has to give somewhere. That is why I think this is where coaching comes into play. Thing is, I am not a coach so good luck to all concerned, Moss, Newton, and the team.

Dusty Bonner was always a leader in SEC passing statistics. Everyone played the run against UK and challenged Hartline to beat them. They were right over half the time. In SEC play Hartline’s win-loss record sucks and that’s the stat that matters. Hartline is a selfish loser. I hope Moss burns it up!!!!!! Newton has the skills to be a good QB. At some point the coaches need to make sure that he is developing. They should have a lot more to work with in terms of talent with Newton than they ever had with Hartlessline. I am so glad he is gone! However, UK will still bear his mark next year by way of an inexperienced QB. Thanks again Hartline.

If I was a 4-star recruit looking at SEC bottom-dweller UK and see all the 4-star players on bench behind 2-stars, I wouldn’t want to go there. Maybe Hartline was worth an extra win this season, but playing him above two 4-stars for two years in a row was 100% the wrong message to send potential recruits. We’re not Florida. We can’t sit at 3rd string a kid like Moss who turned down Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M without giving them a chance on the field. Period. We are Kentucky. If you’re lucky enough to get one of those kids, by God!, you play them. If they suck, let everyone know they suck — don’t keep it a secret on the practice field. This is a huge blow right before signing day. I bet this changes a few commitments away from us. Just terrible.

I am the sports editor at Eastern’s student newspaper and also from his hometown. So when I interviewed him for the story he said that he would be looked at for the QB position. So everyone is on here saying they never got to see him play, and yet also insisting he’s a great quarterback who never got a chance. And saying Hartline sucked, though we put up 30 points a game (even with Cobb not getting enough touches, and Locke missing a third of the year injured). Quite simply, unless he can make tackles there is no playing time for him. The coaches seem to have decided Newton is the better option, and I suggest we not decide whether we agree or disagree until sometime AFTER the kid takes the reins, not before.

    76. If you ever went to a game, during warm ups, and was able to watch this kid throw you would understand why everyone wanted him to get a chance. Of the 3 QBs, he threw the tightest spiral, was the most accurate and had by far the biggest arm. For instance, I went to the SC game this year. In warm ups, of the 3, he was the only one throwing it from the UK logo the the bottom corner of the K in the end zone, with ease, each and every time. The other two couldn’t even get it to the end zone! I am not football coach, but I know what I seen that evening. He was the best QB on the team, but Joker was too scared to play him! It’s a Joke by the Joker. Can’t wait till when the day comes that Barnhardt is in front of the media saying, “you know Joker is a great guy, who did a lot of good things for the University of Kentucky, but we were just not getting the results we were looking for.” And HOPEFULLY, we get a real coach!
Of course, then all we will hear is that UK fans “ran him off.” LOL….WHATEVER!!!!!

I think the smart money is on this team next year to fail to achieve that 6-7 record which “Operation: Win” produced. I must say I like Joker’s coaching staff though; hopefully we can rebuild and achieve that Music City Bowl glory of days gone by.

Moss made this decision because joker has been in love with morgan newton since the word go…..if newton fails joker will be gone, and deservedly so.

How can you say joker has been in love with Newton from go? If not for hartlines drunken stupper Newton wouldn’t have seen the field this season!

i can tell you this if UK doesnt land Lamar Dawson, i’m done with them. If you cant get the best in state recruit in your backyard, with the ties this school has to Boyle County, then you are pathetic.

Wow,Newton is just a soph.who only played in one game this year and most of you fans think he’s not a good qb. I trust Joker, Randy Sanders and Tee Martin a whole lot more than you arm chair qbs.who more than likely never played football or at least by some of your comments, don’t know jackshat about football.Go Big Blue

Agreed. The injury in his senior year in HS knocked him off a lot of lists, so he ended up at UK. I dont think he was ever given a chance here. Knowing of his arm strength, and then hearing Joker talk about how Newton’s arm was stronger – that tells me Joker was playing favorites. This is a sad day for both UK and Mossakowski – we don’t get to utilize his talents, and now Ryan only has 2 maybe 3 years to excel somewhere else.

Say bye bye to any chance for ever recruiting another QB sought by other top SEC teams or for that matter most any 4-5 star QBs…
