A KSR student intern was in the Wildcat Den today for Joker Phillips’ Monday afternoon press conference. Here is Stuart Hammer’s coverage of the presser to go along with the notes we gave you earlier.
UK FOOTBALL MONDAY PRESS CONFERENCE
Stuart Hammer, KSR Student Intern
Joker Phillips held a press conference today after morning practice; he discussed the Western Kentucky game, and looked ahead to the Central Michigan game on Saturday. Winston Guy , Danny Trevathan and Larry Warford were also present for interviews after the press conference.
— Phillips said the team and staff have watched the Western Kentucky game a couple of times, and they have “buried that,” and “it’s time to go to work” focusing on Central Michigan. Offensively there is a lot of work to do, and that offensive line need to get at level they’ve played in the past.
— Morgan Newton had “four or five bonehead plays” and it looks bad when you only run 50 total. It becomes difficult to get in a rhythm with so many three-and-outs, so the team has to make plays for Newton. Joker has set the bar high for his quarterback, saying he doesn’t care if Newton is on the run, in the pocket or staring down defenders, he has to deliver a pass on the money.
— Obviously Phillips was very disappointed with the wide receivers, “those guys did not play well at all outside. It was embarrassing.” He said if the receivers want to act like a pass catcher, “you better catch the dang ball.” Phillips is looking for the receivers to be tough and physical, and put their nose on people. He also suggested there will be changes this week, specifically mentioning Aaron Boyd and Demarco Robinson.
— Defensively, Phillips is proud of the effort the unit showed. He said WKU was beat with defense, and that “they have to carry us until the offense catches up.” Phillips also praised the special teams unit and that stars have already started to emerge.
— Winston Guy played “exactly how I envisioned,” said Phillips. He said more guys need to start playing like Winston Guy and Danny Trevathan, and that their attitude is “infectious.” He wants all of his players to “play like pro’s.” Guy and Trevathan do that, and the rest of the team needs to catch on.
— Phillips was very complementary of young guys Donte Rumph and Christian Coleman, saying the defensive line will soon be a strength of the defense. He also said Luke McDermott is one of the “craftiest guys out there,” and understands how linemen set, and that compromises for his smaller size.
— Bud Dupree, Tyler Brause, Malcom McDuffen and Ashley Lowery all had reps in “critical times” versus WKU, and it was “good to see how those guys responded.” Phillips was happy with the speed they showed in the time they had.
— The injury report is favorable; Phillips said Morgan Newton’s non-throwing hand thumb is “fine” and that he did a good job last week of sucking it up. Brian Adams did not practice today; he was out with an ankle sprain. Collins Ukwu did not practice today, but he is feeling a lot better with a chest bruise.
— Danny Trevathan was happy with his performance in stopping Bobby Rainey, but is focused on stopping Central Michigan and looking to capitalize on forcing turnovers. Trevathan was very complimentary of Winston Guy, saying “he’s taking it seriously,” and that “he is a great addition to the linebacker corp.”
— Winston Guy is very happy with Rick Minter’s defense and always being put in the right spot to make plays. He is taking advantage of his athletic ability to shed blocks and makes plays. Guy also said “everyone has to buy in” to Minter’s defense, and that so far, the unit is doing just that.
