This debate may go on and on for years, but right now there have been a rash of columns about the potential for college athletes to get paid. It’s the summer, and besides AAU tournaments, there is not a lot going on in the college basketball world right now, do topics like this have to be regurgitated. Frankly we all know that college athletes will never get paid, for the shear fact that Title IX restrictions would prevent only revenue sports to get money, and schools will never pay the girls golf team and rifle team, in UK’s case.
But, our buddies over at ASeaofBlue did a nice job of recapping a recent Andy Katz article and breaking down where the hangups truly are and where some coaches, such as Billy Donovan, stand on the issue. They also tell a funny anecdote about Winston Churchill that relates to the issue:
Winston Churchill, who was at a dinner party and apparently well into his cups. The story goes that he asked an attractive woman at the party if she would sleep with him for a million pounds. The woman responded, coyly, “Maybe.” Then Churchill asked her if she would sleep with him for one pound. “Of course not, what kind of woman do you think I am?” she responded, outraged. Churchill replied, “Madam, we’ve already established what kind of woman you are. Now we’re just negotiating the price.”
It’s a good read, even if the topic is dead on arrival.
