Mitch thanks the “real fans” for coming to the game

On the pre-game show with Tom Leach this morning, Mitch Barnhart addressed the low attendance by thanking the “real fans” for coming to the game and said that those who are critical of Joker must have “personal agendas.”

For the record, Larry Glover reports that today’s attendance according to the turnstiles was 19,688. That’s a far cry from 44,902.

Can’t see how Mitch can make such an accusatory statement to the fans! This is coming from a fan who wants joker to succeed here at uk! It seems pretty evident from these comments that Mitch intends on bringing him back. I guess Mitch is not concerned about alienating the fan base because of the security that he has. Does UK have any boosters that care enough about the program to step in on this situation?

I was at the game. Just shy of 20 thousand is about right for the attendance. The only personal agenda that the fans( real, imaginary, bandwagon or otherwise) have is wanting a winning football program. And if that agenda isn’t the administrations agenda then we need to make more than a coaching change is off season. Football pays the bills for our autonomous UKAA. As popular as basketball is uk only gets a percentage of every dollar spent on B-ball tickets. But the university receives every dollar from commonwealth. Protecting football, protects the athletic association and every other sport not coached by Calipari.

Mitch, after 30 plus years of below average football, I can tell you that it’s awful to be a fan of a program that is ALWAYS last or next to last in the SEC, year in and year out. For 60,000 fans to support the program over the years with that performance…. all I can say is I hope you understand how lucky you are. I watched 2 minutes of today’s game, I tuned the game out when I saw that the players had given up after the first Vandy touch down. I only hope that sometime in the future, before I die, that UK can place a competitive team on the playing field. I’d love to see you back in the Outback Bowl one day in the future. Go Blue!

#33 . . . What do you mean “How much of the resources does it take to be at the top of one sport?”? Football is the largest revenue generating sport at the university and funds every other sport EXCEPT basketball. Basketball is self sufficient and championships can still easily be won with a financial commitment to providing fans a competitive SEC football program as well.

But instead of doing this and honoring promises made to Brooks regarding football getting the resources it needs, Mitch continues funneling football massive amounts of football revenue to the minor sports that lose millions. For example, we’re paying a women’s basketball coach $1.1M a year and that program had a net loss of $2.9M last year after expenses. Mitch is an arrogant prick that needs to GTFO after his comments today.

  51. Mike
    5:53 pm November 3, 2012 Permalink

The fans should stay home. Going to a game because you “love UK” sends the message that abysmal play is acceptable. What will ever change if we pack the stadium for teams that win 3 games? Imagine if your favorite steakhouse starting only serving White Castle hamburgers (and you’re sober). You wouldn’t continue eating there because you “love” the steakhouse. You’d go elsewhere until the menu changed. It’s the same way in sports and the fans need to vote with their feet. Don’t leave the game because you’re “fair-weather”, leave the game because this level of achievement is not acceptable and will not be subsidized by the fan base.

  52. kfund

We were at the game today, family and friends. If these quotes are valid and in context then they are beyond insulting, to everyone. Add this to the insult that I saw Mitch on the floor of the season opener (in an area that makes it implicit that I’m a significant supporter)and said, “Hi, Mitch” and he looked past me and completely blew me off.

There are no excuses for his statements, or his inaction. I may well drop our entire football ticket allotment if Joker is not announced as leaving in the next 5 days, and all of our university support if another insult of this nature comes from this AD and the president doesn’t dismiss him as well.

We do have an agenda. It is called winning, and we do take it personally.

The problem with calling out ppl like that is YOU better be right or have EVIDENCE to back it up. After this game Mitch doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Mitch was almost fired for billy Clyde and running the basketball program into mediocrity. Now he has hired an assistant coach that’s only SEC experience is at UK(lets face it we were average/below average with brooks) and then has defended that decision to death. He has made his decision now he and joker can find jobs together. #firephillips&barnhart

Mitch has lost his mind. Personal agendas? We just got shut out at home and beat by 40 points by Vandy, we’ve won 1 game all season, and Mitch wants to act like its something personal against Joker. Everyone likes Joker, everyone wants to see him succeed. So if Mitch ends up firing Joker, should we all accuse him of having some personal agenda against Joker, that’s obviously the only justification for being critical of Joker since his coaching has been so superb. Lol. And this idea that they can put a terrible product on the field and still think that they are entitled to everyone’s support, financial or otherwise, is a big part of the problem. I’ve always supported Mitch and never really had a problem with him until today, but not only did he insult almost all of our fans today, but you really have to start to wonder if he’s even capable of being objective concerning Joker. Mitch owes our fans an apology, and people like Matt Jones need to hold his feet to the fire and make sure we get one. Unfortunately Joker is in over his head. If the University ignores it’s responsibility to the program and the fans (I kept my season tickets for two years after moving 400 miles from Lexington) then it will never rise to a level of excellence. And they should confess to the fan base that they are unwilling to take steps to improve performance. If Mitch’s loyalty blinds him to the need to make tough decisions then he should leave. Leadership is everything and we are severely lacking in our football program.

The sad truth is Barnhart made a horrible decision in placing a close friend in a role as volatile as a head coach in a major revenue sport. We must all assume his personal agenda is to protect his friend… hell with the fans that buy tickets. Good luck living with TV revenue only. The bad news is that Caliputo could give a bigger crap about athletics. If he had his way, all tailgating activities would cease (of course, if Joker is back next year that will be a moot point).

Regardless of Joker, watch Mitch decide it’s time for a professional change in the not so far future.

I’ve been sitting here trying to remember exactly what Mitch said to Tom in the pregame show and I can’t remember word for word, but I don’t remember that he included everyone who is critical of Joker as having personal agendas, just some. Again, I wish I could hear it again because it is so controversial and it is important that it be understood correctly exactly what he said. I do remember thinking it would rub some people the wrong way, but I don’t think he was including everyone critical of Joker in that statement. I also remember agreeing with what I thought he said. I do think there is a faction of UK fans (because I know some of them personally) that were never going to accept Joker as the head football coach because of his race. To say that they don’t exist is not accepting reality. That point is now moot anyway because his performance on the job has sealed his fate. Mitch will have to let him go, hopefully tomorrow. I wish he had been successful. I personally have never understood the animosity some fans have towards Mitch. We almost won the Capital Cup last year. We are not big KFund contributors (all our money goes to pay medical bills) but Mitch has always been very pleasant whenever I’ve encountered him. Then again, I’m not someone who is trying to tell him what to do either.

And yes, Brooks did okay, but don’t tell me there wasn’t an active young coach that couldn’t have done the same. Allowed a Coach in Waiting who was the O-coordinator for a team that had to win with defense 90% of the time (exception: whenever Cobb returned a kick off to the end zone). This guy has been poison for UK athletics, especially the MONEY sports, and no one seems to get it. 173- You have no way of knowing that and Cal is here along with a bunch of other good coaches. I don’t think MB is without fault in the FB situation,he’s actually at big fault but just fire Joker and move on. FB is a after thought at UK rioght now and it is most seasons. I want to see better FB but BB is the flagship and it is sweet. Screw FB for this year. It’s over.

Congratulations Mr. Barnhart, your unbridled arrogance and ham-handed handling of the Philips situation has helped me decide to NEVER again purchase UK football season tickets while you are the A.D. Until this current season, I have attended UK football games since the days of Stoll Field. This season I did not renew my tickets. Enough was more than enough. Now Mr. Barnhart informs me via his comments that I not a real fan because I refused to spend one more dollar this season to support a football program that Barnhart himself clearly refuses to support. What an arrogant, obtuse, obsequious, incompetent individual Barnhart is. Let me assure you, Mr. Barnhart, my checkbook is quite real and it will be a really cold day in Hell before I ever write another one to UK Athletics while you’re employed there. Nice to know that Barnhart believes that there’s only 19,688 real UK football fans on the planet. Good luck financing the football program with those 19,688 fans in the future.

177, if Barney wanted Cal here so bad, he would’ve at least CONSIDERED him the first time. But he didn’t. Instead, he hired an alcohol sociopath, and allowed him to run the basketball program into the ground for two years, all the while doing it without a written contract, which cost the school millions. He hired Cal the second time, because he had to to save his own skin. Bottom line. Put it this way: if the CEO of a Fortune 500 company succeeded in making the “little” parts of the business successful, while simultaneously driving the main revenue generator into the ground, he’d be terminated instantaneously.

Well this “real” fan was at the game until halftime. No effort or inspiration from the team made it impossible to sit through the 2nd half of the game. This is posted by a real fan that hasn’t left a game before the end of regulation in order to support the players and coaches. This real fan will also renew his season tickets next year coaching change or not. But from a fan’s perspective, this coaching staff has lost the players and needs to change.

175 – I’ve never been and never would go to a KKK meeting and I’m not saying there is a significant portion of fans that are racist but yes I do believe there are some. It is amazing what people will say to you if they know you won’t judge them. To think that there aren’t any is unrealistic. I don’t think the majority of fans are racist by any means nor do I think Barnhart does and the vast majority want Joker out because he has done a horrible job. I am in that group. What I have been trying to say is that I don’t remember hearing Mitch say all the fans that want Joker out have an agenda. To say NONE of them do is naive. There are some people who don’t like blacks being in a position of power. To them it’s ok to have great black players but not someone calling the shots. It’s very possible that Mitch has been hearing quite a bit from those people for three years. I’m just trying to be fair to Mitch. I try to listen to people with the intent of understanding what they are trying to communicate. I’m afraid what Mitch said may have been taken in a wrong way. That is why I would like to hear it again.

Bumhart hired Gillespie (knowing he had TWO DUIs), Brooks (after NCAA violations), DeMoss (crashed and burned), Sanders (bud from Tennessee – couldn’t even win with Manning), and don’t forget his daughter (no doubt MUCH more qualified than any other applicant). He opposed the hiring of Cal.

He may be a good AD for the non-revenue/who cares sports. But given his past mistakes, he should not be allowed to have any input on the new football coach.

Barnhart shouldn’t be fired, he got us Cal, even if we had to go through Billy Ball to get to Cal. But he does struggle with big time job searches. If I remember right, the job search after he let Morris go to Baylor had no direction whatsoever and went on far longer than it should. After Tubby left, Cal didn’t even get a phone call from UK and the “real fans” had to suffer through Billy Ball. Which Mitch has never really revealed why he didn’t give Morris’ assistants the raise that Morris had ask for them, but then gave Brooks more money and his assistants more money over what Morris’ staff had been making.

I think he’s just too stubborn to admit mistakes. He got lucky with Brooks(which I think Sanders had more to do with that than anyone admits, Woodson doesn’t become a real qb until Sanders is hired). Joker was the recruiting coordinator so “the team is young” shouldn’t be discussed, it’s not like he’s new to the staff or having to pick up the pieces after a coach leaves. And, don’t forget the asst coaches that Joker fired quickly after Brooks left… It’s time for a change

@186 Well Linda ok, so you don’t attend KKK meetings, well where did you meet these racist fans you referenced in an earlier post? I think Mitch just stepped in a big pile of sh*t today and you are trying to help him out. Of course there are SOME racist people everywhere (and by racist I just don’t mean whites that don’t like blacks…there are many forms of racism) but I heard Mitch this AM and I found his comments to be very offensive and I turned off the radio. Mitch said what he said and now he has to live with it. 99% of the fans like Joker but think he needs to go and not because of his race but because he has driven the UK football program into the ground.

A reasonable AD should be taking the high ground on this one. Alienating and slandering tens of thousands of fans that have been paying top dollar for decades is an inexcusable insult and makes no sense from a business standpoint. Trying to divide the fanbase is also unwise as well as foolish.

Anyone who wants to credit Mitch the Bitch for last years championship is a complete retard. The only reason we got Cal is because Mitch was going to lose his job if he didn’t. He should have hired Cal the year we hired Billie Drunk. Cal said he was sitting by the phone waiting for a call and that peice of shit Mitch Barnhart didn’t hire him. I guess he thought he was going to get a deal with the dipshit from texas. Mitch does not get it!!! He’s not worried about helping the football program. He’s only worried about keeping his job. 192 – This is flat out not true and a complete fabrication. You were obviously nowhere near those close to situation when CAL was hired. It is fair to argue that Mitch had reservations on CAL and that he wasn’t his first choice. Mitch did have to be talked into CAL, but not to the extent that his detractors would lead you to believe. CAL was on the SHORT LIST that Mitch identified. Not boosters. Not Matt Jones. Not your source. Mitch. Mitch put CAL on the list and Mitch hired CAL. Maybe CAL didn’t like Mitch because he heard that Mitch had to be talked into hiring him. That said, CAL was on Mitch’s list and hired by Mitch. There is no other way to spin it.

Mitch needs to pick his panty wedgie and apologize to the fan base for saying that true fans can’t protest an obviously failure of a season (or hire) by voicing their opinion the loudest way possible, ticket sales. Business is business, winning sells, poor coaching doesn’t. Why is that so hard to understand? He has offended may loyal fans by his comment, myself included. Race has nothing to do with poor football coaching, Do you think fans wanted Gillispie gone because he was white? UH-NO. Fans spend thier money to come watch a great game, not to watch a football team or basketball team get blown out every game. I know plenty of UK fans that really hoped that Joker would succed, he is a very good man, but he isn’t getting the job done plain and simple. When you hire Rick Minter from Indiana st to come coach the defense you have problems, he couldn’t do nothing there so why in hell would you bring him to the SEC? I feel sorry for the players more than Joker, I have never seen a team looked so confused in my life, I was at the game today, and it looked like they didn’t even care. And honest truth I don’t blame em, hell you don’t know who is qb or rb each weekend. Joker says well they are young, There are plenty of other teams with young players that are winning. UK has the best fans in the world and have sit through many football games in the rain and snow to support the football team. If Mitch wants the fans to care, then he needs to act like he cares also about football, and if Joker cares so much about UK quit making excuses and just say we stink and its time for me to go, it would make things a lot easier.

Oh UK fans, how soon we forget! Is it really unbelievable that UK football went 2-10 on a season? Mitch hired a coach that didn’t work out, big deal. Joker did 2 things no coach at UK could do, beat UT and beat Spurrier. This is his worst year by far, thanks to 3rd string RB and QB. And he’ll get fired for it. We’ll get a new coach, win 3-5 games, sometimes 6-7, and you guys will complain. If you want good football keep going south, it’ll never be here, spoiled ass fans.
