Mitch Barnhart wants you to believe

Despite Commonwealth Stadium only being around 72% capacity, many in attendance said the atmosphere inside was unique. Fans were excited and overjoyed in the first half after seeing the Cats storm out to a surprising 17-7 halftime lead. Mitch Barnhart took notice.

Is this an athletic director doing his job, willing fans to support a sputtering team that is desperate to show signs of life? Or is he just begging for ticket sales?

    2. As bad as poor of a future as someone with nothing better to do than to troll the websites of opposing teams and leave comments that I hear from my middle school students on a weekly basis.

Now that that’s out of the way, it was a solid atmosphere during the first half last night. Nice to see the fans rallying around the players who are performing their hearts out, regardless of whether or not they support the coach.

    Go Cats.

I just wish I was able to go to one game in Lexington. The only time I get to see the CATS is when they come to Knoxville. I don’t have the luxury of driving up I-75 to see them at CWS. If I did have the luxury of going, I would be at every game whether they won or lost.

He is telling the truth. No ploy for ticket sales. Im a season ticket holder for the last three years. I was there for the near auburn upset, the spurrier streak ending and the tennessee streak ending and the first half had the most energy ive ever seen in that place. It was incredible. Crowd factor does do a lot to help a team and honestly im glad a lot of the bandwagon fans quit going to the games. They didnt deserve to see and hear what i seen last night.

My family and I were at the game last night and I can tell you that the crowd that was there was very vocal and supportive of the team and how they played, especially in the first half, but there were a lot of empty seats and that has to be something weighing heavily on Mitch and the administration. This only proves that the fans are starving for success and have been for many years. This should be a sign to Mitch that if we hire a great coach and commit to upgrading the facilities, especially Commonwealth Stadium that the fans will continue that great support, howerver, there will be lots more of them filling all of those empty seats, which means more $$$. Cannot think of another school or program in the SEC that deserves to have a better football program than Kentucky!! For the support that is still shown after what we have been through the last 30-35 years is unprecedented and its about time we commit to winning program from top to bottom and it has to start with theadministration. The fans have spoken, now will they listen? Go ‘Cats!!

@2 Well….we are not all blessed with a pop warner schedule like some…I you should pay more attention to those teams that you guys are playing because your great team is struggling to beat them. Now….all of those who continue to get excited at the start of every UK football season has yet to learn their lesson…and the realistic fans have zero pity for them…their disappointment is of their doing. Why can’t they take it for what it is…gather with friends, have fun and watch the cats until our REAL team takes the court. The level of expectations for a football program that has never really been any good continues to baffle me.

Our fans need to support our players 100%. Im really glad to hear about the atmosphere , in the first half at least. Whether you are happy with our coach or the AD, the players need us. And when they come out like last night and show and give heart. Ill defend them till the end of time.

Keep working hard, try to keep getting better keep fighting. And avoid the negative noise. Come on Wildcats. We are in this together.

Go Big Blue!!! And IU is still garbage.

The best way to support the program and the players is to boycott the games. Boycott UK Football.

I’m sure the players want to win. That will not happen under Joker.

The Senior’s are screwed no matter what.

The rest of the guys would benefit from the Joke being fired and a real Coach being hired.

By attending the games, you are not supporting the future. You’re ensuring that the future will be more of the same.

    Mr. Hammer,

I don’t understand why the fans and Barnhart can’t work together. It does not look good for our program to have a website like this calling for a change in the head coach (or suggesting it). I know your job is to spur the controversy since you are media and all, but I think KSR should set the example and support the football program. So many people read this site and the opinions posted here have a HUGE affect on readers around the state. Joker, in my eyes, deserves the ENTIRE season to prove if he should stay or go. Yes, i am disappointed and discouraged – who isn’t?. When Joker took over he was handed a repaired program that looked to be on the rise. If you take into consideration how young this team is and the talent we have lost in the past 2 years this kind of season shouldn’t be a surprise. Remember when everyone was calling for Brooks’ head after 3 seasons (i think they won like 10 games total)? Look what happened with a little bit of patients – 4 straight bowl seasons. Joker’s situation is different and I understand that, but he has great young talent and we need to see that through. I wish everyone would stop acting like we had a consistently great program at one time. We don’t put the money into football to turn this thing around fast so patients is key. Joker deserves 1 or 2 more years (2 considering the recruiting classes he has brought in).

    thank for reading

@ 17…3 in a row and 4 after that?….been there…done that…maybe you have a short memory though, bud!…You can try to convince yourself and others that you’re a football school and nationally relevant all you want..but deep down YOU know that’s just not true, don’t you. Since there’s a lot of talk over here about coaching changes I would like to get your opinion on the subject…Who does ul go after once the coach realizes that if he wants to be a player nationally, he’s going to have to go elsewhere…honest question..who would you guys hire?

    17. You do realize Arkansas is going to come knocking most likely? I hope Strong has strong loyalty to you all, because SEC prestige is hard to pass up. Not to mention what Arkansas will be willing to pay.

Who is to say our teams won’t look completely different in two years? You can hardly predict who will win the game two or three years from now. Joker won’t get a contract extension, and if Barnhart is actually willing to shell out some cash we may get someone decent. Plus there may be some facility renovation in our future. Predicting the game next season is one thing, but you can’t say we will never win again because Strong isn’t going to retire at UL, and the Big East will soon be home to powerhouses like SMU and Memphis. The Big East is becoming CUSA, and UL would do well to get out now.

15 – While waiting in the waiting room at the Dr.’s office a patient needs to have patience as some patients require more time than scheduled. I hope that sentence was illuminating. I appreciate the courtesy you used in your post. All too often people on this blog are just plain rude. I was fully in support of giving Joker this year to right the ship and while the young players look promising, unless a miracle happens and they win most of the rest of their games, I have to say it will be time for a change. This saddens me because I would have liked for Joker to be successful as our head coach. But your opinion deserves to be heard just as much as anyone else’s so don’t let people like 16 bother you.

Hey Mitch… if you like the atmosphere yesterday, imagine what it w/b like if you got a coach that could coach and got the facilities where they need to be to compete. You would fill an 80,000 person upgraded stadium for goodness sake!

    Just do it Mitch!

The crowd had nothing to do with the 1st half. we looked good in the first half because SC came into the game THINKING of us as the complete joke that we are …. they got their arses chewed at half time and then came out and SHOWED us what a complete joke we are. If SC played even close to their “A” game for the entire game, the score would’ve been about 76-0.
