Last Wednesday, I sat down with Mitch Barnhart for a 45 minute interview on the state of UK athletics. We will be showing that interview on Monday and Tuesday night on KSTV, but here is the quote that I found the most interesting, as Mitch talked about Football and Basketball Facilities and football having the priority at this time:
The fact that basketball has been taken care of in recent years and football is where the current focus is for the University might be a bit surprising. But it does represent where the program will be headed on facilities over the next couple of years. I will go into this a bit more this week after the interview airs, but if you are around, make sure and watch it on CN2, Monday and Tuesday night at 7:30 or 11 pm. Mitch talked candidly about a number of topics, including:
— His grading of the first year of the Joker Phillips era
— How UK can be competitive at the top levels of the SEC in football
— Rumors about his somewhat tense relationship with John Calipari
— The allegations of player abuse during the Billy Gillispie era
I found his interview fascinating and we are airing it all, uncut, something that doesnt usually happen for local television news. Check it out tomorrow night and we will have clips here on KSR after the shows air.
Between now and then, what do you think of the “football first” mentality that Mitch is suggesting, at least as it deals with facilities?
