Mitch Barnhart announces new compliance hire, says athletics department budget is approved

Mitch Barnhart has had a busy morning. UK’s athletic director went before the media to discuss the department’s progress and the 104 million budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, which was approved by the board of directors. Barnhart said that budget includes an increase of $3 million for football, $2.4 million of which will go towards higher salaries for new coaches. I’d say they’re earning their keep so far; in the understatement of the morning, Barnhart said that football recruiting is going “pretty well” right now.

Of that $104 million, football and men’s basketball will be allotted around $25 million. If you think that’s way too high (why are you here?), Barnhart pointed out that those two sports create the most revenue for the school. Football creates the most with $30,580,000, and men’s basketball the second most with $21,932,500. As Mitch put it, “two programs feed twenty.”

Also, UK’s got a new member of the compliance department: Rachel Newman Baker, who will serve as the senior associate athletics director for compliance. Newman Baker worked in the NCAA Compliance Office as the managing director of enforcement for development and investigations, and will report to Bell, serving as the liaison between the athletics compliance office and the UK football and marketing offices. Bell, the executive associate athletics director for student services, will shift her focus to the men’s basketball team.

Barnhart also noted that it’s been nine years since UK Athletics has had an academic penalty (APR) from the NCAA. They’re one of only two SEC schools to lay claim to that, along with Vanderbilt. Oh yeah, UK’s student athletes’ GPA isn’t too shabby either–at 3.14, it’s the highest it’s ever been.

    2) Jurich hired Kragthorpe and Pitino took them 13 years to get where they wanted to be. Point is Cal and Stoops have been home runs to clean up this mistakes.

Also, it looks like Joker did not make it in the Top 100 coaches of the SEC in recruiting.

Woah, wait a second. We are allocating 52 million to two programs that bring in right at 52 million. If that is the case then those two programs break even. How do they feed twenty again? Am I missing something?

2 tyson – wtf? Surely your just joking!? If not, i’m sure you’ve never made any errors in decisions for home or work. Also, never forget the circumstances of those hires – joker was on the wish list of many a major program and bcg hire was applauded as a great hire by hoops experts and fellow coaches. Bad hires no doubt but theyve more than been made up for.

8 and 10–Mitch did everything in his power to not hire Cal. He gets no credit for that. And I am very hopeful for Stoops. He is doing a great job so far. But let’s wait 3 years or so before we say what a great hire he was. And would he have been on Mitch’s radar if he had not actively lobbied for the job?

10–whose wishlist was he on exactly? He was a terrible offensive coordinator and recruiter. I can’t imagine he was on any SEC teams HC wishlist.

While Barnhart hasn’t hit a homerun every time, he sure has done a great job with the Athletic Dept at UK. Sure he hired Gillispie, but as I recall there weren’t alot of high caliber candidates available at the time and Gillispie was a hot commodity, so probably appeared to be the best available at the time. Thank goodness Barnhart and company did a 180 on Cal when the coaching job opened up again a couple of years later. He “righted the wrong”. As far as hiring Joker, it was a tough call but certainly one that it appears Rich Brooks strongly endorsed. After the job Brooks did, it would be tough to tell him to pack sand.

Overall when you look at how our programs compete, to include recent success in baseball, golf, tennis, softball, women’s b-ball, etc. there is no comparison. Barnhart has made critical hires to help us be competitive in a number of sports, not just men’s basketball. And while many fans were loudly calling for him to hire Petrino, he resisted. His choice sure looks good right now!

Combine the performance of the teams at the university along with the fact that we have gone nine years without an infraction and that the overall GPA of our teams is higher than it has ever been… Barnhart is doing an outstanding job! Thanks Mitch!

Tyler’s article wasn’t quite right. I guess she was bound to make a mistake eventually when you crank out the volume of information that she does.

Basketball and Football weren’t allocated $52 million, but are projected to bring in $52 million in revenue. They were allocated a $25 million expense budget, thus 2 hands feeding twenty mouths as the other $27 is split among the other programs and adminstrative expenses.

Mitch would have been fired after the Gillispie/Joker double header fiasco if Lee Todd hadn’t given him that huge contract extension as he was heading out the door. Mitch is terrible at fundraising. There are plenty of better ADs out there.

Never been much of a Barnhart fan but i have to admit things are going pretty well for UK right now. As bad as he screwed up with Joker, he’s appeared to have righted the ship. A few years down the road and we’ll see how good this recruiting has paid off for football.
