Miss Catfish Wants Notes from The Road

We are still on the road, traversing this great state as part of the KSR Radio Tour. Today we were at the Farm Boy Restaurant in Morgantown, Kentucky for what was an absolutely great time. First of all, the crowd in Morgantown was amazing, especially considering that the show does not usually even air there until 5 pm. We also had great food, and some of the best catfish I have ever eaten, for lunch and met Miss Catfish herself. Raven Brooks, pictured above, won the prestigious award, which by rule must go to a citizen of Butler County. She was nice enough to come and talk to us and allow Drew the Employee to wear the crown. All in all, it was a fun time and a great second stop on the trip. We thank everyone in Morgantown for their hospitality and Ryan Lemond thanks Farm Boy for their homemade coconut pie. Some thoughts from the day…..

— The biggest story of the last few months is the revelation about the Yum Center lease today by InsiderLouisville.com. UL is scheduled under the lease to take over the building and own it, assuming it defaults due to lack of revenue (which by now seems very likely). The revelation is one I had heard speculated upon for some time, but now that it has been verified, this should serve as a bombshell. What we have set up is a public building, funded by state and local taxpayers, entering into a contract with a University in which the University essentially controls the building for six months, thus preventing it from maximizing revenue. That same University admits that its intention is to not allow an NBA team into the building (which would be a huge economic boom for the state) and instead it will control the building under the lease’s terms. Now we find out that if the lease fails due to these terms, UL can own it so as to ostensibly “have a place to play.” The entire lease is a shameful dereliction of duties by the Arena Authority and when it comes out (and it surely will) that the Arena Authority was stuffed with UL/Jurich/Pitino cronies…well there should be hell to pay for those people. We shall see if there will be.

— It is time for Big Blue Nation to be on the lookout. Sports Illustrated has hired “Team TH” to be its new “Investigative Team” and without question, UK will be on their target list. I will write more about this later, but the combination of Pete Thameltoe and Thayer Evans as the two hires at SI means that clearly the magazine will come after Kentucky and Calipari. We all know about Thameltoe and his writings in the past, but Thayer Evans has the same amount of Calipari hate. You may remember that he basically followed UK around for the last two weeks of the season, at the Mississippi State game and at the SEC Tournament, and wrote three columns that were each arranged on the “UK won’t win the title” theme. Thayer Evans was originally a protege of Thameltoe, working with him at the NY Times and the two are now reunited at Sports Illustrated. Add in that both are Syracuse grads AND Nerlens Noel picked UK over Syracuse…and well, I am certain that an SI investigation of Noel is coming. You can count on it. Their obsession will continue.

— Remember that we will have a “no holds barred” interview with Joker Phillips on Friday at 11:30 am live on the radio show. It will occur at Media Day and will be a chance for some questions that many have wanted to know the answer to for some time, to all get answered. If you have (serious) questions that you want to have asked, put them in the comment section. I have told UK that I will be aggressive in the questioning, which I think will be good for Joker as well. Along with that, remember that Fan Day is Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. I think that is one of the best events of the year and definitely worthy of attendance, especially if you have kids.

We will see everyone tomorrow in Bowling Green at Olde Stone Country Club for the show. The public is welcome and I even hear that Kige Ramsey will be in attendance. How can you miss it? The rest of the tour stops are below. See u in the AM!

Question for Joker: With all these talented running backs on the roster how are you going to put your best players on the field?

As someone said in the previous thread, I’m not sure UL wants to step in and own the building. The university would then be on the hook for the cost. I mean, the university COULD make a lot of money doing that… But only if it allowed an NBA team to locate there.

Please ask Joker if we will open up the offense. Use the pass to set up the run and be less predictable. My son and I never played a down of football and we were honestly calling the plays before they were ran. Joker may not believe or want to believe this but we could tell when we were blitzing, so Im sure the opposing coaches could.
And please dont hand off up the middle with third and 11 or throw a 5 yard pass in the same situation.

Please stop saying an NBA team would be an economic boon for the state. Everyone knows you did not major in economics. Much like Fourth Street Live in Louisville, 99% of the state would not be affected. The ignorant people that think FSL was a good investment of tax dollars (much of it was underwritten by tax $) fail to realize how it has hurt other businesses (Bardstown Rd, Frankfort Ave) which were locally owned while catering to big corps like Borders who can just pick up and leave anytime they want since it was our tax dollars that built their facilities not their own money.

Maybe we can get those on the arena authority to serve in the legislature that Mitch is always scapegoating as why he can’t get things done. They seem to be real friendly when it comes to making athletic facility deals.

Question for Joker: It seemed like so many times last year on 3rd downs, we consistently threw short of the first down marker. Where does the blame for this fall? With the receivers or the offensive coordinator? As a coach, I would have to put the blame on myself when my players repeatedly made the same mistake. Or is the philosophy to catch the ball short of the first down marker and run for the first down? If that is the plan I would change it. Thanks

Ask joker , you talk about talent and how you develop it but we see Vanderbilt and Louisvillle recurriting at a higher level than we have, any time you have beem here ,we have the last rated class at this point, unlikely to change, What is your plan to start getting top 20 classes

You come across as somebody that will not stand up to the AD, will u fight for this program or will u roll over to secondary sport trend at UK

Some of these comments epitomize what has been wrong with America for at least a generation. You don’t judge your AD based on how well he suckles himself on the public teet any more than you judge your representatives in Congress on how many giant check presentations they hold.

There is nothing honorable about abusing the public trust.

Normally I just laugh at KSR and Matt Jones for attacking various media members and their various agendas. I too am a supporter of UK and I enjoy the site and the podcasts. Sometimes I think there may be a bit of overreaction by the fan base.

However, with Pete Thamel and the other guy, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE Matt Jones to rip them apart. They are poison and a joke in “reporting”. Matt and my fellow UK alums and fans, time to bring out the bazooka. GO CATS!

    Joker:
what can the university do, if anything, to improve the talent pool in the state of KY?
do you think if you played hartline in the bowl game & won the fans would overwhelmingly respect you?
why does he believe running a spread or air raid or any “gimmicky offense” is a worse option at UK than pro-style?
what potential does UK football have for the upcoming 2 seasons?
why does he believe ticket sales plummeted for football this season and does he believe solely winning games will bring sales up?
    do you watch american idol?

Ask Joker: How hard is it to project in recruiting in regards to having balance at positions and what they can do to improve? For instance, this past class they signed had to be very heavy with offensive lineman and db’s. Which was similar to the WR class of 08 that included 5 WR’s. These leaves us lacking experience in those years at those positions.
Also, with Mike Douglass playing well at the end of the year last year on the outside, ask what their plans are for moving him inside as the most recent depth chart shows. Will he play snaps on both the inside and outside?

11 – Not Joker, but I will bite on this because one of my biggest complaints in football is fans who have a problem with throwing short of the first down marker on third down. This can be done for multiple reasons. For starters, the defense knows where the first down marker is as well. If its 3rd and 10, they are setting up their defense specifically to stop the 10-15 yard pass. A lot of times this leaves the 5 yard pass wide open. If you can hit someone easily who is 5 yards out than maybe they can get the last 5 yards on their own. If not, than maybe you only get 8 yards, but that adds an additional 8 yards to your punt. Instead of the opposing team starting out at their own 25, they may start at their own 17 because you picked up those extra yards on third down.

Sometimes you just have to take the sure completion and hope that your playmakers can break a tackle instead of throwing into extra coverage and possibly getting a pick. FWIW, I understand the rationale that it seems like you aren’t going for the first down, but thats not the case.

Question for Joker – Without naming names because I don’t expect Joker to(would be great if he did), how many true freshmen are likely to be redshirted and how many have a real chance to play?

I would like an honest answer from our current football coach as to why the football program has not had a winning SEC record in thirty five years. Over the years UK has put a lot of football players and coaches in positions to fail, is this from lack of support or stupidity? Are the support and resources now in place to allow UK to become competitive in the SEC? Exactly what has changed at UK that makes you think you can compete in the SEC where your predecessors could not.

    Matt et al,

Here’s a schematic question I would love for you to ask Joker: Oftentimes it seems UK’s receivers run their routes short of the first down marker in 3rd and long situations. Is this done by design (easier to make a catch as the DB naturally gives ground to underneath routes and then receiver expected to break a tackle) or was this poor play on the part of the players.

    Thanks.

Please explain the apparent disconnect between UK’s President who says he is solidly behind you and the football program yet you can’t even get budgeting to build a recruiting room– something former coach Brooks said was a MUST HAVE to compete in the SEC. Here’s another tough question that needs to be asked, ” Now that fans have FINALLY realized that they are no longer going to settle for mediocre football (see current season ticket sales), do you HONESTLY see the football team getting the financial support from the administration to be able to compete in the SEC?” I doubt we will get straight answers to these questions since the administration signs his paycheck but this really is problem #1 as many see it and it is LONG past due to call the powers to be out and make them tell the truth– an emperor has no pants moment! I love UK football but I am sick and tired of it being treated like the red headed step child and will NOT spend another dime on tickets until I start to see improvement in facilities and on the field. Enough is enough! Stop the smoke screen lies that we all have been fed for the last 50 years or expect to see season ticket sales to go even lower.

Matt, thanks for this opportunity. Here are my questions for Joker:

-Why do we insist on trying to beat the traditional powers like Florida,LSU, Alabama. etc. at their own game? We cannot compete and win that way. We do not and will not ever have the personnel to do that. Players or coaches. Why won’t he try a different tact? The pro-style obviously isn’t working; why not change your philosiphy to suit your players?

-Why are we being out-recruited by Vanderbilt and Louisville? UL is in a dying conference, and are in danger of being left out of the whole superconference alignment. Vandy, well, they don’t have as much going for them as UK. But they are killing us on the recruiting trail. Why?

-If this season yeilds no improvement from last season, will Joker do the right thing and step down as coach, regardless if UKAA would let him have another season?

-What, in Joker’s opinion, will it take for UK to be competitive in football in the SEC. And why don’t we do it?

    Oh, and also:

-Looking at the Boise State model, they do more with less. UK typically gets better recruiting classes than Boise State, but that never translates to success on the field. Is this coaching? What can we learn from Boise-type teams that don’t get elite talent, and don’t spend a ton of money on football, yet are VERY successful on the football field?

There is now a paved road to Paducah if you have not updated your maps. Given that UK will have two and possibly three players from Paducah Tilghman, it might be worthy of a stop.

Why have 4 star players sat on the bench while walk-ons started (Brandon Gainer, Alex Smith, Elliot Porter, Aaron Boyd)?

Why did he give a scholarship to Elliot Porter if he had no intention of ever playing him?

Why has Toledo taked more three star players from Ohio than Kentucky?

Will Zach West get to play this year/ever play?

Did anyone see the Virgin Diaries On TLC where that guy, Skippy, went around and tried to talk to super hot girls and would try to bribe them with stickers and T-shirts to go a date with him or kiss him? The girls would talk to him to be nice (or because there were cameras there) but you could see that they were repulsed by him. That is pretty much Matt Jones and the girls he puts pictures of on KSR, or his creepy crush on Kate Upton.
