Minnesota beat writer reports Tubby didn’t know about firing until we did

Tubby Smith

According to Amelia Rayno, the college basketball beat writer for the Minnesota Star Tribune, Tubby Smith did not know that he was no longer the Gophers’ head coach until CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman broke the news. Rayno’s sources says the coaching staff was planning to meet with the administration this afternoon regarding Tubby’s future at Minnesota, and if he was indeed already fired, he had not been notified.

If true, that’s just cold.

Tubby is a good coach. Not great. Would have kept winning 20 games a year at UK indefinately, but no more banners either. He needs to thank Rick for the team inherited in 98. Regardless, He and Donna are both classy people and deserved better than finding out secondhand.

12- Are you serious? The 97 team was arguably better than the 98 team and didn’t win. If the argument is based on talent alone then that is a major counter point. Also, go back and watch the 1998 Duke game from the tournament, Tubby flat out-coached Coach K.

Fired for what? Bringing a less than mediocre program into the Top-10 earlier this year? Under Tubby they pretty much had a 20-win season every single year. Check out their record before Tubby. A lot of single-digits in the win column in the years prior: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/m-baskbl-year-by-year-records.html

We as KY fans wanted Tubby gone when he left. How can we fault the gophers for wanting the same thing? Yes Tubby and his family are great people. They are very classy and good for the community, but at the end of the day it’s still a business. Tubby will always have a top 20 team with 20 wins a season, but he will never win another championship. You cant fault someone for wanting better even though that may never happen to Minnesota.

Six years ago, when Tubby left Ky for MN, a columnist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Partick Reusse, wrote a blistering article re: Ky, repeatedly calling Kentuckians “Bozos” and implying racism. The article was linked nationally. Six years later, he has nothing to say when Minnesota FIRES Tubby. Here’s his e-mail address:

Hmmmm, me fears that this will not bode well for Cal-&-‘Cats to lure star ’14 PG Tyus Jones from state of MN, as the “Goofers” no doubt will try to get a young, dynamic recruiter/coach as their new head-man, & “job-1” will be to make certain that young Mr. Jones stays put right there in Minnie-Lland???

    15) Are you are you serious? Every thing I’ve read on here by the Tubby supporters goes back to 1998. You all seem to leave out he was here for 10 years. You leave out all the 10 loss seasons, player arrest, transfers, and a over alll lack of talent!
How, can some complain about Cal for having a down year this year after last years team and a super team coming in. Then take up for Tubby who is still making millions off Shepard getting hot at the right time.
Go back and look at the team Tubby left BCG on his first day as UK coach. Pitino was leafy a better team by Sutton his first year.
Tubby left his players like a thef in the night at UK. He tanked our program and some still support him? Yes Tubby pulled the race card and used it to his advantage. If Tubby had been a white man he would have been out of coaching years ago!

I think I would have been satisfied with this record for a program with a 9-22 record prior to his arrival. What sort of history are they remembering? The mid / late 90s? That was literally fake / all vacated due to massive cheating and that reputation for Minnesota lingered on. Minnesota isn’t exactly a huge draw for recruiting to begin with – not a top tier program you hear of people just dreaming to go to.

  62. Dee W

Oh boy…there we go again with people who have revisionist history. No, you don’t have to go back to 1998 to find a great deal of success during Tubby’s tenure at UK. If you want to argue it wasn’t good enough, fine…but argue based on actual facts:

    Tubby Smith record at Kentucky
1997 – 1998 – 35-4 overall, 14-2 SEC, SEC regular season champions, SEC tournament Champions, NCAA Champions
    1998 – 1999 – 28-9 overall, 11-5 SEC, SEC tournament Champions, NCAA Elite 8
    1999 – 2000 – 23-10 overall, 12-4 SEC, SEC regular season Champions (tied), NCAA 2nd round
2000 – 2001 – 24-10 overall, 12-4 SEC, SEC regular season Champions (tied), SEC tournament Champions, NCAA Sweet 16
    2001 – 2002 – 22-10 overall, 10-6 SEC, NCAA Sweet 16
2002 – 2003 – 32-4 overall, 16-0 SEC, SEC regular season Champions, SEC tournament Champions, Granted #1 seed NCAA tournament, NCAA Elite Eight
2003 – 2004 – 27-5 overall, 13-3 SEC, SEC tournament Champions, Granted #1 overall seed NCAA tournament, NCAA 2nd round
2004 – 2005 – 28-6 overall, 14-2 SEC, SEC regular season Champions, SEC tournament runner-up, NCAA Elite Eight
    2005 – 2006 – 22-13 overall, 9-7 SEC, NCAA 2nd round

I think Few from Gonzaga takes over at UCLA. He’s a west coast guy and UCLA is UK of the west they have a tradition only rivaled by UK! To me BH’s firing is a carbon copy of Tubby leaving UK( tubby might not have been fired by UK but you would have to believe the writing was on he walk! The fans of UCLA like UK expect to be in the mix for a championship every year. Both schools pay the coach verry well and we give our coaches every thing they need to win!
UK’s got the right man to run our program. Cal gets our history and what UK means to us. I hope UCLA can do the same. CBB needs for UK, North Carolina, and UCLA to be good. Would love to see Uk win a championship that has us, UCLA, IU, and Carolina in the Final Four.

    64) it’s clear you are a Tubby supporter and that’s ok because in the end it only opinions and we all are entitled to our own! That doesn’t make either of us wrong or right. That said I too think Tubby did a good job in the 1998 tourney run, but I think Tubby got complacent after that year. His recruiting is a direct reflection of that. Tubby was brought in billed as a recruiter after bringing some top talent to UGA. His first 2 classes at UK produced Prince. Thenhe landed Stone and Bogans who where both considered top 5 players at that point. Then a steep decline untill 04. Even in 04 if you followed recruiting then is deceiving. Crawford the center piece has giving MSU a verbal. Rondo was given a scholarship only after coach Bibby told Tubby Rondo was upset with UL over Telfar and if UK offered he would except.
At the time Loften was passed over the only committed player was Adam Willams who tubby said was a better player.

Speaking of Tubby supposedly only being able to win with “Pitino’s Players” from the naysayers – explain this one – Tubby beat Pitino after he came to Louisville by a 4-2 margin – 4 out of 6 meetings – including the last 3 seasons Tubby was there in a row so those would have been entirely Tubby vs. Pitino’s players and none either of them inherited.

Just remember when Tubby signed on with Min he was promised a new practice facility which he never got. Yet they expect to win with nothing. I always say he should have left for a better program (Michigan to replace Ammaker). ESPN’s Brennan says about Minnesota:
Minnesota is not a particularly desirable job. There are no practice facilities to speak of. It is cold. The Barn is charming, but 17-year-olds typically prefer futuristic and flashy to charm. Recruiting against the rest of the Big Ten is hard enough already, but now that Iowa is locking down more and more in-state talent and Iowa State is becoming a resurgent power under Hoiberg – not to mention the huge money Nebraska is investing into its program right now – well, let’s just say Gophers fans ought to be realistic about what to expect. The ceiling is limited. It’s a challenge.

My heart goes out to Tubby and his family. Having been fired before I can sympathize with how he must feel today. The millions of dollars really can’t replace the gut feeling when a person is let go their job. But he should have no regrets because he has done the job the right way and has treated people with the most class and respect. I know there is no other person in the coaching profession that garners more respect than Coach Orlando “Tubby” Smith. Coach, you will be fine wherever this next chapter in life leads you. Doyel was spot on. Tubby won with other folks’ players. He inflated his record by playing 15 cupcakes before drowning in the Big 10. And he hired only cronies as assistants. Tubby is easily the most overrated coach in basketball.

    70) by your FACTS tubby w clearly on a decline.
    72) you are clueless. as the rest of the state knows Loften wasn’t a late bloomer where did you come up with that LOL. Loften tied Farmers records as a junior. He had a offer to UL as a Junior only to be pulled because Telfair sighned sighned at UL
Loften was told he would not get a offer to UK when Williams was the only signee. Crawford was still committed to MSU at that time So yes you need to know what your talking about before you speak.Believe me you can go to Mason CO. And ask about the timeline regarding Loften being told UK didn’t want him and they would be more the glad to educate you.
    70) I was trying to be nice but since you want to be a everlasting Tubby apologist. Uk was not even in contention for the title in 7 of those 10 years. The facts are Cal has been to more FF in 4 years then Tubby was in 10. Tubby has over half of the ten loss seasons in over 100 years.
Not to mention Tubby jumped ship on what would have been a horrible team if he had stayed but I guess that was somebody else’s fault too. Funny how you leave out Omar Cook. You know the Number 1 PG would wanted to com to UK but said he didn’t think he would get a fair chance to start over Saul. He went to St. Johns and scored 20 on Saul! You left out the Class guy who left with out even telling his players first now that’s Class.

    73) Poor Tubby never had fair chance at Minn. to win really! I would be willing to bet Minn. has a lot more facilities then Butler, VCU, or Ganzaga. Minn. is in a power 6 conference and had more then enough to win . The reason Tubby didn’t win is because Tubby doesn’t spend the time it takes to recruit and refuses to recruit the AAU teams. His words not mine.
Let’s see doesn’t recruit top talent, refuses to recruit AAU, plays a boring 3 pass offence, ball line defence, and hires less then stellar coaches. Now that’s how to create a winning program. Lol. As I said Tubby should could call Jeff Shepperd every morning and think him for makeing him a very rich man. Tubby has used the 98 team have a long career because I’m sorry with out that year he doesn’t have the resume’ to deserve the contracts he’s got

    78) Be careful the Tubby apologist are out in force! Never mind that tubby didn’t have the Class to tell his players he wasn’t going to be their coach regardless of what the reason was for him leaving! I did feel for those players several bluntly who weren’t good enough to plat at UK! Than they had the misfortune of having BCG comeing in next. You take a kid like Porter who should never have been brought to UK in the first place being forced to play major minutes. Tubby should apologize to him every day for the distane the BBN had towards that kid. Tubby should never had brought that kid in

Classless move by Minnesota not to tell Tubby he was fired before it was reported to the media. Tubby Smith oozes class. I respect the man.
Raise the Smith banner in Rupp!!!

“70) by your FACTS tubby w clearly on a decline.”

The last two years weren’t the best, but there is factual way to spin that as a decline over the entire tenure including highly successful seasons with top ranked teams.

“Tubby apologists”? No, just stating the facts in light of nonsense. We’ve been here correcting the Calipari bashers as well.

All this talk about how great a guy Tubby was. He may be a nice guy, but how do you know? He had been negotiating with UM during his last season at UK. He only hired cronies. He wanted the school to violate Kentucky nepotism policies to hire Saul Smith. When he left, he just left his assistants behind.

Agree with 38, they have to have already talked to some up and coming coach and made a deal with them. Tubby was good for Minnesota and had them competitive and in the tourney, inluding winning a game in tourney. That is not great success in some places but is for them.
