Former UK point guard Michael Porter is in jail in Lexington this morning after being charged with sexual abuse related to incidents with minors said to be 14 and 15. The court documents say Porter met the fourteen-year old while serving as a church counselor. According to the jail website, Porter faces six charges of sodomy and two charges of first degree sexual abuse. More details to come…

Former UK player charged with sexual abuse
WKYT has confirmed a former UK basketball player is in jail charged with sexual abuse.
Michael Porter last played for UK in 2009. An arrest citation obtained by WKYT shows Porter is charged with sexual abuse and sodomy involving at least one minor.
Court documents show on two separate occasions, Porter gave and received oral sex from a 14-year-old whom police say he met as a group leader at a church function.
Separate documents allege the same type of crime happened involving a 15-year-old, but it’s not clear if there were two victims

I have no details on either case, but I do know that an accusation is not the same as a conviction. The police have no discretion on whether to arrest someone on sexual molestation charges, even if that person is a former UK basketball player. Just because they arrested him does not mean he is guilty. If he is, I agree with the statements above, but I think we would all be less willing to convict immediately if this involved a different player.

In Kentucky, no investigation is necessary for police to make an arrest when the charge involves an alleged sexual offense.

I agree with the few who are saying, let’s wait and see if he is actually charged and convicted. There are too many examples of false accusations that occur in these types of cases. But as evidenced with these comments, most people want to display their outrage and assume all accusations must be true. The person’s reputation is then marred for life, even if it is later learned there was no truth to the accusations. All it takes is any wacko or someone with a personal agenda to claim sexual abuse. Even with minimal info provided, if it seems plausible, the cops are then obligated to make an arrest. An investigation will then determine if charges are really warranted. If he is charged and convicted, then he deserves everything he gets. But accusations and an arrest are no reason to assume he is guilty.

It is way too early in the investigation for anyone to jump to any conclusions about this. We will have to wait until the FACTS come out before we slander this guy. The fact that there is more than one accuser would tend to work against him, but it has not been revealed if they know each other.
I have two young daughters, and if it turns out to be true, then IMO there is no hell hot enough for him. However, I also coach youth sports, and one of the things you ALWAYS avoid is to put your self in a situation where you could even be accused of something like this. Unfortunately, there HAVE been cases where people were falsely accused of things like this. To presume guilt or innocence with no evidence at all paints us all in a bad light.

According to law in the state of KY, you have to be 13 years or younger, I do believe, to have a case for “statutory rape” or criminal charges. Meaning if those two girls gave their consent, he will be acquitted.

I was once in the typical crowd too, until I had experience with something similar a few years ago. A state trooper showed up at the door one evening to investigate accusations that had been made by a relative. She had called her local police and claimed my brother-in-law and his wife had been physically abusing their children. None of us had even seen her for 2 or 3 years. Fortunately, over the next couple of days they were able to easily determine there was no plausibility to her accusations and no one was arrested. They quickly learned she had a long history of well documented mental problems. But had she simple been a pissed off person with an agenda, arrests may have occurred. Porter may or may not be guilty, but having plausibility for an arrest is far different than having enough proof to warrant charges.

Well, this thread certainly has gone off topic. I’ll leave it with this. My daughter asked me the other night why there is a hell, and why God allows bad things to happen in the world if he loves us so much. I have to admit that I didn’t really have a good answer for her. Many others have tried to answer that question, but NONE of us can. The way I see it is that hell is defined as a place where there is no God, just as you can define cold as a lack of heat. I don’t think “God” can be summarized in human terms as a being that thinks the way we do and gets angry as a human would. Perhaps bad things just happen on their own, and we can use our faith in God to give us the strength to get through them. At least that’s the answer that I gave my daughter. To all the atheists out there – I respect your freedom to have your own opinion, and I hope you will respect mine. I don’t like fellow Christians who try to force their beliefs on others, just as I do not like atheists who smugly look down their noses at believers like they know something that we don’t. It is true that a lot of wars have been started because of religion, but IMO that is subverting and bastardizing everything that Christ taught us. And now for a new perspective…having worked in ministry for most of my life one thing I know is that most (smart) churches carry insurance policies in case something like this happens. That way they have some level of coverage when they are sued because one of their officers/workers messes up. I have known people to be wrongfully accused in hopes of getting money out of the church. I’ve also seen people wrongfully accused of misconduct so that they get removed from a position so that someone else can step into the same position (like a relative of the accuser).
It may turn out that Michael is guilty of the accusations made against him, and if so, I hope he is punished according to what the law requires. However, I can’t help but think how ignorant of a society we’ve become when we allow the seriousness of the charge to outweigh the common sense that would tell us that there’s two sides to every story and that we should withold judgment until all of the facts are known.
It infuriates me to go on other message boards (e.g., ESPN) and read comments from the “where’s there’s smoke there must be fire” crowd regarding Coach Cal, and I’m sure it irritates most people that post here as well. Are we no better than those same people when we jump to similar conclusions about Michael, not knowing any of the facts, not knowing the accuser, not knowing if there is motive, and let’s face it, for 99% of us, not even knowing the accused outside of what we’ve read or seen in interviews or on the basketball court?

Leonardo da Vinci would be familiar with the plight of homosexuals. He was one of the GREAT EVIL TOOLS of Satan in his day. Designing those devilish machines that we use today had the Church hot on his trail. With that in mind, I have a request for Christians. Please don’t make me vote for Obama. I don’t want to do it. I certainly do not want to vote for a candidate who wishes to thrust America morally back into the dark ages, either.
#300 I travel around the world for business several times a year. I always think about the US’s standing around the world in science and math when I see people from mulitple countries checking out their IPADS or talking on their iphones, droids, etc… and using all of their windows tools. If we’ve fallen behind in science and math then I’d like to know who the leaders are because I don’t see it.

It’s a long answer, but the short of it is that these US-based companies (which are definitely leaders in the commercialization of technology) largely (and are increasingly) hiring foreign graduates to work for their companies.

300 & 310 – I recently retired after 35 years in IT and was a 1st hand witness to the massive off-shoring of jobs the past 5 years or so. I will argue the decline in US science and technology graduates (medical science, chemistry, mechanical or computer engineers, etc) is directly related to the lack of US job prospects. It’s not a matter of US citizens not having the aptitude or capability. I’ve personally seen thousands of qualified IT engineers laid off the past 5 years, as their work was moved to China, India, Brazil, Bulgaria, etc. They were typically replaced by someone (or often multiple people) much less skilled, but at a much lower wage. The same is happening in many other science/technology related fields. I believe your original question/inference is incorrect. The US is falling behind in science/technology graduates, because of the decline in jobs and not due to a decline in aptitude.

I’m not sure how you can make that argument given the trend in declining US science grads predates the job recession by more than a decade. While I can admit it’s a little disingenuous to say that religion is the primary cause for this, but the conservative religious social undercurrents of this country that has made “science” a dirty word surely has to have some impact.
