Michael Porter Jailed On Charges Of Sexual Abuse

Former UK point guard Michael Porter is in jail in Lexington this morning after being charged with sexual abuse related to incidents with minors said to be 14 and 15.  The court documents say Porter met the fourteen-year old while serving as a church counselor.  According to the jail website, Porter faces six charges of sodomy and two charges of first degree sexual abuse. LEX18 says it’s 2 teenage girls, 14 and 15, who he met while he was leader of a church group. Disgusting.

Innocent until proven guilty. It is Kentucky law that in the case of a sexual abuse allegation, the police HAVE to investigate it, regardless if the allegations have any merit to them, and basically if you are accused, you have to go to jail. So, let’s let this sort itself out.

There is a special place in hell for people that ACT like they are Church oriented, but are actually dirty and disgusting. So, have we determined if these ‘children’ that Mike had sex with were girls or boys? YES, it does make a difference. There is being a horny, sex deprived, 27 – 28 year old – and there is – being a sick F’n 27 – 28 year old that likes boys. Thoughts are with the ‘children’ and their families.

Saul was certainly a better player than Michael Porter. If you didn’t see that I don’t know what you were watching. And in their last seasons Saul only played 3.5 minutes more per game than Porter. The stats back me up.

    Saul Smith final season stats — 29.3 minutes, 6.8 points, 37.3 FG%, 34.5 3PT%, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, 1.5 steals
    Michael Porter final season stats — 23.5 minutes, 4.1 points, 36 FG%, 33.0 3PT%, 2.5 assists, 1.7 rebounds, 1 steal

I’m curious how this transpired. For instance, did he rape them? Or were the teenagers willing, and then someone found out, so then they claimed it was sexual abuse?

Either way, this is a horrendous crime that only a select few other crimes would rival. I commend KSR for reporting it, because if they haden’t, they would be no better than the LHL for refusing to report the Karen Sypher incident.

The comments on this board are nearly as repulsive as the charges brought against Porter. What shocks me are the countless people who automatically assume guilt for Porter without knowing anything about the case or personal knowledge of the facts surrounding it. Porter may very well be guilty, but it’s become a sad day in America when the Court of Public Opinion automatically tries and hangs a man without allowing the Justice System to do its job. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY is the key here, and the burden of proof is on the accuser, not the accused. Geez…

Former UK player charged with sexual abuse
WKYT has confirmed a former UK basketball player is in jail charged with sexual abuse.

Michael Porter last played for UK in 2009. An arrest citation obtained by WKYT shows Porter is charged with sexual abuse and sodomy involving at least one minor.

Court documents show on two separate occasions, Porter gave and received oral sex from a 14-year-old whom police say he met as a group leader at a church function.

Separate documents allege the same type of crime happened involving a 15-year-old, but it’s not clear if there were two victims

This is absolutely shocking. As one who knew Michael personally while he was here, I pray that the allegations are not true. It kills me reading through all of these comments because I hate to think about how badly this will affect the rest of his life and they way that others remember him. Please don’t get me wrong. I am completely in agreement that if true, this is a disgusting thing and Michael should rightfully be punished for it, but I do ask one thing of KSR readers. Instead of just slandering him, if you are one who prays, pray for his wife and two children as well as the rest of his family. It’s easy to see stories like this when you are unconnected to the individual and just rant about what a horrendous person they are, but when you actually know them, know their family, and believe that something like this is completely out of character for them, it is much harder to swallow. So please, consider having some respect for those who are not as much outraged by this as they are disappointed and personally affected. My thoughts and prayers are with ALL of the families affected by this, the Porters included.

My guess is that people would be more willing to “wait and see” and “not jump to conclusions” if Porter had been a more popular player. I recall Chuck Hayes getting all the support in the world when he was accused of rape, with the general population believing that the woman must have been lying. I have no details on either case, but I do know that an accusation is not the same as a conviction. The police have no discretion on whether to arrest someone on sexual molestation charges, even if that person is a former UK basketball player. Just because they arrested him does not mean he is guilty. If he is, I agree with the statements above, but I think we would all be less willing to convict immediately if this involved a different player.

I agree with the few who are saying, let’s wait and see if he is actually charged and convicted. There are too many examples of false accusations that occur in these types of cases. But as evidenced with these comments, most people want to display their outrage and assume all accusations must be true. The person’s reputation is then marred for life, even if it is later learned there was no truth to the accusations. All it takes is any wacko or someone with a personal agenda to claim sexual abuse. Even with minimal info provided, if it seems plausible, the cops are then obligated to make an arrest. An investigation will then determine if charges are really warranted. If he is charged and convicted, then he deserves everything he gets. But accusations and an arrest are no reason to assume he is guilty.

I have two young daughters, and if it turns out to be true, then IMO there is no hell hot enough for him. However, I also coach youth sports, and one of the things you ALWAYS avoid is to put your self in a situation where you could even be accused of something like this. Unfortunately, there HAVE been cases where people were falsely accused of things like this. To presume guilt or innocence with no evidence at all paints us all in a bad light.

What probably happened here is the girls’ parents found out about it and are pressing charges. But they will probably lose their case if the sex was consensual. Unless the girls are conspiring to lie and say it was not consensual. Which may be the case. But then the burden still is on them to prove it was not consensual.

I say this because I once thought like you do – that I am a “big boy”, and I can get along just fine without any need for God or religion. Do I believe in God? Yes, although there is no way for me to scientifically quantify the existence of God, the alternative to me is so unthinkable, that I would rather take the chance that I went through life under a “delusion” than to face a life devoid of God. And no, I am not some kind of bible thumper whose mission is to convert everyone around me. I had some things happen in my life that put things in their true perspective, and made me realize that sometimes all you have left to pull through and face the day is your faith in the one thing that is absolute. It’s a free country, so you are welcome to your beliefs just like I am to mine. I was once in the typical crowd too, until I had experience with something similar a few years ago. A state trooper showed up at the door one evening to investigate accusations that had been made by a relative. She had called her local police and claimed my brother-in-law and his wife had been physically abusing their children. None of us had even seen her for 2 or 3 years. Fortunately, over the next couple of days they were able to easily determine there was no plausibility to her accusations and no one was arrested. They quickly learned she had a long history of well documented mental problems. But had she simple been a pissed off person with an agenda, arrests may have occurred. Porter may or may not be guilty, but having plausibility for an arrest is far different than having enough proof to warrant charges.

JayCee – You come across as really angry and incredibly condescending. You don’t sound like you’re “beyond” this in the least. From the way you describe yourself in relation to these poor, brainless souls who actually believe in God, you’d think an objective observer would be able to identify the rational party right away just by reading the thread. That’s definitely not the case here. And if everyone who entertains or has honest debate over the notion of any type of supernatural phenomena is beneath you, then shame on you for not curing cancer by now. I’ll assume you had no reason to pay any mind to the pedestrian physicists from Cambridge, Oxford, etc who gathered for the “State of the Universe” earlier this year in honor of Hawking’s 70th birthday when the findings of Vilenkin, et al. were discussed.

The point is that people much more intelligent than you debate this all the time and exchange nervous schoolgirl type emails to each other in preparation for debating high-level apologetics. However if we are assuming that God is a timeless being for whom 1 day is a 1000 years and visa versa (I assume you’re attacking the Christian God) and life on earth is but a tiny blip on the radar for a similarly eternal soul, then suddenly 80 years of sub-optimal living wouldn’t have the same sting to it. Once again, though, not an argument I’m here to make. I’m not dealing with Christianity or any other specific belief system. I’m talking about the principle of arguing on theism in the abstract.

Well, this thread certainly has gone off topic. I’ll leave it with this. My daughter asked me the other night why there is a hell, and why God allows bad things to happen in the world if he loves us so much. I have to admit that I didn’t really have a good answer for her. Many others have tried to answer that question, but NONE of us can. The way I see it is that hell is defined as a place where there is no God, just as you can define cold as a lack of heat. I don’t think “God” can be summarized in human terms as a being that thinks the way we do and gets angry as a human would. Perhaps bad things just happen on their own, and we can use our faith in God to give us the strength to get through them. At least that’s the answer that I gave my daughter. To all the atheists out there – I respect your freedom to have your own opinion, and I hope you will respect mine. I don’t like fellow Christians who try to force their beliefs on others, just as I do not like atheists who smugly look down their noses at believers like they know something that we don’t. It is true that a lot of wars have been started because of religion, but IMO that is subverting and bastardizing everything that Christ taught us. That’s all I am going to say about this subject any more. Apologies to those who came here to read about SPORTS! 🙂

And now for a new perspective…having worked in ministry for most of my life one thing I know is that most (smart) churches carry insurance policies in case something like this happens. That way they have some level of coverage when they are sued because one of their officers/workers messes up. I have known people to be wrongfully accused in hopes of getting money out of the church. I’ve also seen people wrongfully accused of misconduct so that they get removed from a position so that someone else can step into the same position (like a relative of the accuser).

It may turn out that Michael is guilty of the accusations made against him, and if so, I hope he is punished according to what the law requires. However, I can’t help but think how ignorant of a society we’ve become when we allow the seriousness of the charge to outweigh the common sense that would tell us that there’s two sides to every story and that we should withold judgment until all of the facts are known.

It infuriates me to go on other message boards (e.g., ESPN) and read comments from the “where’s there’s smoke there must be fire” crowd regarding Coach Cal, and I’m sure it irritates most people that post here as well. Are we no better than those same people when we jump to similar conclusions about Michael, not knowing any of the facts, not knowing the accuser, not knowing if there is motive, and let’s face it, for 99% of us, not even knowing the accused outside of what we’ve read or seen in interviews or on the basketball court?

That God allows people to sin is part of my faith, that sin goes unpunished or without consequence is a misunderstanding of orthodox Christian faith. Sin has consequences and whether this is Michael’s sin against children or a sin of children lying about him- there are huge consequences.

Michael’s life is ruined, his families lives are ruined, these kids lives are damaged so badly for their entire lives- whether this happened or not. What I find disappointing in this thread is that at least one and as many as three people’s lives have been harmed so badly and so many of you are commenting in ridiculous and frivolous ways. Stop it and realize the hurt done here. This is not the place to act stupid and hurtful.

They will be without self-control and brutal, and they won’t love what is good. They will be people who are disloyal, reckless, and conceited. They will love pleasure instead of loving God. They will look like they are religious but deny God’s power. Avoid people like this. Some will slither into households and control immature women who are burdened with sins and driven by all kinds of desires. These women are always learning, but they can never arrive at an understanding of the truth. These people oppose the truth in the same way that Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. Their minds are corrupt and their faith is counterfeit. But they won’t get very far. Their foolishness will become obvious to everyone like those others.

We aren’t devolving. We aren’t evolving. We aren’t doing anything as a race. Not as individual races or as the human race.

Some people evolve. Others do not. Some groups move forward. Some do not. Each collective has a group of intelligent persons at the top and a group of morons at the bottom. There is, then, a whole grand mix of folks in the middle with talents that range from the extraordinary to the mud.

We aren’t doing anything. As always, individual humans are doing as they wish on multiple levels. One can judge the whole of humanity based upon message boards as well as one can judge all of humanity based upon the actions of it’s most intelligent and compassionate individuals.

Message boards are mostly people wasting time because they have nothing better to do. Not exactly the most motivated group out there. If they were motivated to do good or evil, they’d not be wasting time on a message board.

These places are for those who are simply muddling along in life. We are middlers. Some of us are here temporarily. Some are here for life. Those who are on message boards for life will accomplish nothing and are probably in some way neglecting some other person or persons such as wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, children or some effort at which their time could be more productively put to use.

If you are here, you’re no better than the rest of us. Especially if you took time to post that bit of drivel.

    @ 270

Words can be very evil. Hatred, lies and whatnot. There’s a lot of evil being spewed on here.

Anyone that takes the time to type something awful is not only bored and wasting their time, but they are being total jerks at the same time.

I’m just trying to get some people to think while I’m bored and wasting time.

We’re doing something as a human race and it isn’t good.

Think about this: a small flame can set a whole forest on fire. The tongue is a small flame of fire, a world of evil at work in us. It contaminates our entire lives. Because of it, the circle of life is set on fire. The tongue itself is set on fire by the flames of hell.

People can tame and already have tamed every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and fish. No one can tame the tongue, though. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we both bless the Lord and Father and curse human beings made in God’s likeness. Blessing and cursing come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, it just shouldn’t be this way!

Are any of you wise and understanding? Show that your actions are good with a humble lifestyle that comes from wisdom. However, if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, then stop bragging and living in ways that deny the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above. Instead, it is from the earth, natural and demonic. Wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and everything that is evil. What of the wisdom from above? First, it is pure, and then peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good actions, fair, and genuine. Those who make peace sow the seeds of justice by their peaceful acts.

@ 291 – I shouldn’t bother responding to such obvious trolling, but I’m taking the bait. Looking at one shot in isolation is, even for a Louisville fan, a remarkably idiotic way to assess the careers of two players. Let’s look at a whole season’s worth of data, shall we? In their final seasons with their respective teams, Michael Porter scorched the nets to the tune of 77% from the free throw line, while Edgar Sosa bricked his way to a measley 65%. Porter is clearly the better player. And, need I mention that Porter’s simply amazing free throw shooting took place during Billy Gillispie’s tenure, when Coach Gillispie actively discouraged his team from hitting free throws, even going so far as to threaten physical violence? It seemed counterproductive, but it clearly got results from Porter. Sosa, on the other hand, played for a team that was considered to be one of the most talented in the country, yet he could not lead the Cards to an NCAA championship.

    QED. Get your facts straight.

You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn’t God long for our faithfulness in[a] the life he has given to us?[b] But he gives us more grace. This is why it says, God stands against the proud, but favors the humble.[c] Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. Cry out in sorrow, mourn, and weep! Let your laughter become mourning and your joy become sadness. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Religion is simply a relic of a time where early human society needed some sort of commonality to band together and prosper as a species. Now all it does is hold us back as a society and gives our more feeble minded/amoral fellow humans a way to deal with the complexities and challenges of every day life. You see how hateful these kooks are when they’re attempting to follow a morality code–can you imagine how much worse we’d be if these lunatics didn’t have some imaginary guy in the sky telling them to try to do right? The US is falling behind the rest of the world both in science knowledge/education and social progress, any guess as to why that is? Hopefully we’ll catch up sometime in the next 100 years but I’m not holding my breath. As long as they don’t try to overstep my basic civil rights (oh wait, they try to do that all the time), I have no problem with letting the crazy folk believe whatever they want to. Live and let live, but just know that those of us who can think rationally for ourselves are laughing on the inside at you.

If anyone really thinks the police didn’t take into account he was UK player are crazy. And to think he was better than Sosa is bad wrong Porter couldn’t have started on most church league teams.

The conversations you have with the voices inside your head aren’t of concern to me. That being said, you’re all right by me as long as those voices don’t “move” you to, say, deny people the right to live their lives the way they want and be happy (see North Carolina). Leonardo da Vinci would be familiar with the plight of homosexuals. He was one of the GREAT EVIL TOOLS of Satan in his day. Designing those devilish machines that we use today had the Church hot on his trail. We’re only now re-discovering the brilliance of Da Vinci thanks to the Wisdom of the Ages and it’s Champion Christianity.

With that in mind, I have a request for Christians. Please don’t make me vote for Obama. I don’t want to do it. I certainly do not want to vote for a candidate who wishes to thrust America morally back into the dark ages, either.

#300 I travel around the world for business several times a year. I always think about the US’s standing around the world in science and math when I see people from mulitple countries checking out their IPADS or talking on their iphones, droids, etc… and using all of their windows tools. If we’ve fallen behind in science and math then I’d like to know who the leaders are because I don’t see it.

300 & 310 – I recently retired after 35 years in IT and was a 1st hand witness to the massive off-shoring of jobs the past 5 years or so. I will argue the decline in US science and technology graduates (medical science, chemistry, mechanical or computer engineers, etc) is directly related to the lack of US job prospects. It’s not a matter of US citizens not having the aptitude or capability. I’ve personally seen thousands of qualified IT engineers laid off the past 5 years, as their work was moved to China, India, Brazil, Bulgaria, etc. They were typically replaced by someone (or often multiple people) much less skilled, but at a much lower wage. The same is happening in many other science/technology related fields. I believe your original question/inference is incorrect. The US is falling behind in science/technology graduates, because of the decline in jobs and not due to a decline in aptitude.

Blue Heaven, if Free Will is part of the plan???? IF? IF? IF? (and I believe that to be the case)

Why do American Christians insist on legislation enforcing God’s will/plan?

Christians, in America, have enforced the Bible via Legislation/Law since the first colonies.

God gave us Free Will. Christians always want to take it away. Christians are the anti-Christ.

I’m not sure how you can make that argument given the trend in declining US science grads predates the job recession by more than a decade. While I can admit it’s a little disingenuous to say that religion is the primary cause for this, but the conservative religious social undercurrents of this country that has made “science” a dirty word surely has to have some impact.
