Michael from Dallas Heads to See the Cats

If you have listened to the KSR Radio Show, you have heard Michael in Dallas call in and give his insights into games. He is the young UK analyst who always has good opinions and he was able to go to College Station to see his Cats play Texas A&M. He filed this report for KSR.

I was excited to go to the game to see Kentucky play and was really hoping we would have a John Hood sighting. I really thought this was his night and it was going to have a big game when the exit to head towards College Station was Madisonville.

The Big Blue Nation was in full effect at Reed Arena for the game. I have always known that blue got in but I was really surprised at just how much blue there was. It was unbelievable! We had several A&M fans stop us and tell us how shocked they were at just how many UK fans were in the building. I think the A&M ushers and players were even shocked at the number of fans in blue lined around the court in pregame snapping pictures. The chants at the Harrison Twins from the UK fans and the Go Big Blue chants reminded me of South Carolina last year. There were times it turned into a home game. And then, all the chants and swaying back and forth by the A&M ‘yell leaders’ made it seem like somewhere I have never been. The football traditions simply don’t work at a basketball game. It was easy to see why UK gave up leads and turned the ball over 19 times with all the distractions going on around them. Some of the hand motions those guys were doing looked like things I would get in trouble for. I was confused as to why they were calling it a sellout when an entire portion of the upper level behind one of the baskets was completely empty. We were told that when they put in the new scoreboard, most of that section could not see the basket at the other end. From what I have been told, they have a really good engineering program. Hmmmm…..

Speaking of tradition, in looking at some of the history of Texas A&M, they remind me a lot of the University of Louisville. They have the same ‘little brother’ problem of Texas that UL has of Kentucky. The words of the fight song are all about the University of Texas. To me, that’s ultimate jealousy.

Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck! Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!

Good-bye to Texas University

So long to the Orange and the White

Good luck to the dear old Texas Aggies

They are the boys that show the real old fight

“The eyes of Texas are upon you…”

That is the song they sing so well

So good-bye to Texas University

We’re going to beat you all to–

Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem

Rough Tough! Real Stuff! Texas A&M!

I am not sure what Hullabaloo, Caneck, Chiggarroogarrem mean, but the fans at Texas A&M sure get excited about these made up words. From the story I heard from an Aggie, because A&M was created before Texas, they don’t feel like UT should be the University of Texas.

It was a great trip. I appreciate Jimmy Dykes and the Harrison Twins taking the time to take pictures with me. It wasn’t pretty at times, but the Cats pulled out a win and that was the icing on the cake.

I attended the game. The kid is spot on. There’s some wierd ass A and M traditions. And yes, the have a massive inferiority complex. And yes, the A and M staff was shocked at the turnout.

Michael from Dallas has a bright future ahead of him, and his parents should pat themselves on the back.

Now for the A&M fight song: Seriously, what kind of fight song is that mess.

Michael from Dallas you remind me so much of a young Wildcat Willie. Love your calls and how passionate you are about the Big Blue all the way in Dallas Texas. It’s obvious you have been raised right in more ways than just basketball smarts. You show respect for your elders, “yes sir” which is almost lost in today’s society. You have a knowledge of the game that is beyond your years. Just keep it up young man, you make BBN proud!

I live in Austin and you aren’t exactly right by comparing A&M to UofL… If anything it’s Texas that has convinced themselves that Aggies have envy of them. Maybe they used too, but not in several years. That song dates back like 100 years. I look at Texas like Louisville, they talk alot of shit and can’t back it up.
    …that being said…Go Big Blue

Great post. I think Texas A&M is superior to Texas though, they are already beating them in recruiting. It will be that way for a while unless Texas moves to the SEC or another big time conference.

A lot has been mentioned about the various traditions at Texas A&M. I am a Kentucky native and diehard CAT fan who attended graduate school at A&M way back in the early 70’s. My wife and I spend four years at the College Station, Texas school and our first child was born there. The school has an unbeleivable number of traditions that are still today as rich and treasured as they were when first developed. It is really unfair to negatively judge the traditions if you have never attended the school and experienced them first hand. Until the mid-sixties the school was all male and rotc was required. Texas A&M has graduated more army officers than West Point. A&M’s nickname is Army. I pull hard for A&M except when they play UK. Go to Wikipedia and check out A&M and hopefully you will have a better understanding and appreciation of the school and its many traditions.

    11. – I was wondering the exact same thing? This is now the 3rd picture I’ve seen of the H Twins with admiring UK fans. In all 3 pictures they look like they’re posing for the cover of “Tough Guy Quarterly”. Geez, can’t even muster a smile for a 10 year old kid? Hopefully I’m just being your typical UK fan and I’m completely over-reacting to this. I remember similar comments being made about Boogie 3 years ago and now he is one of our most beloved Cats.

Michael from Dallas: Fantastic job! Matt: You need to make a spot for Michael from Dallas… Seriously. BBN# Awesome job supporting our future as you have done in this comment section. Dr. Tom: The BBN does not WANT to understand the traditions of other schools. We’ll take being the most storied program over A&M’s cheers every day and twice on Sundays. And we’ll continue to have fun at A&M’s expense.
