Tonight most of America will be engulfed in figuring out where LeBron will end up next year, and that is understandable. But as a former Cav decides where his future will be, dont forget a former Cav with Kentucky roots. Melvin Turpin was one of the best big men to play for the Cats. He was one of the faces of Kentucky basketball in the 1980s and an individual who made everyone around him happier. I have spoken to a couple of former players today, both of whom are devastated by the news. Melvin Turpin meant no one any harm and seemed to all those around him to be a happy person who loved being a Kentucky basketball player. In recent years, his life has been much more difficult and as today’s suicide obviously showcased, he faced difficulties we cannot understand.
Turpin was a big part of what makes Kentucky basketball and its connection to its fans so great. As the sports world focuses elsewhere, make sure and remember one of the Big Blue legends locally. He was a great one and is Big Blue forever. Rest in Peace, Dinner Bell Mel Turpin.
