Melvin Turpin has passed away

Some terribly sad news tonight as former UK star Melvin Turpin has died at his Lexington home, the victim of an apparent suicide.  Turpin, 49 years old at the time of his death, was an outgoing and dominant center at UK from 1980 to 1984, where he paired with Sam Bowie to form the dominant “Twin Towers” duo for Coach Joe B. Hall.  “Dinner Bell Mel” (or “The Big Dipper”) was a three-time All-SEC honoree and was named to All-American teams following his junior and senior year.  The Lexington native played five seasons in the NBA after going sixth overall in the 1984 NBA Draft and was most recently working as a security guard in Versailles.  I had the privilege of interacting with him several times and he was always very cordial and engaging.  Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
