Bullitt East star Derek Willis isn’t all that unkown to Kentucky fans, but the four-star power forward hasn’t really been given much attention since he committed to Purdue in April. Even after de-committing from the Boilermakers, the 6’9″ 2013 prospect appeared to not be an option for the Cats or the Cards when his dad said he didn’t trust either head coach. However, that seems to have changed as Willis took unofficial visits to both local schools over the weekend and his father came away with what the Cats had to offer.
Here’s what he said to the Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling about the trip to Lexington:
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” the father said. “But I had a lot more comfortable feeling after being there, meeting those guys and seeing the school.
“Coach (Calipari) seemed like a real neat, genuine kind of guy. He was real personable. Derek and I both really liked Coach Calipari. I was surprised what they have going and the plans for the future.”
He, of course, still does not have an offer from either school and is still considering the Boilermakers, as well as Indiana, Xavier and Oklahoma State. But the player that ESPN credits for being very skilled for his size, but needing to work on his maturity and his body, will apparently be in the mix for Kentucky’s 2013 class going forward. So get to know his game.
