Meet Derek Willis

Bullitt East star Derek Willis isn’t all that unkown to Kentucky fans, but the four-star power forward hasn’t really been given much attention since he committed to Purdue in April.  Even after de-committing from the Boilermakers, the 6’9″ 2013 prospect appeared to not be an option for the Cats or the Cards when his dad said he didn’t trust either head coach.  However, that seems to have changed as Willis took unofficial visits to both local schools over the weekend and his father came away with what the Cats had to offer.

Here’s what he said to the Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling about the trip to Lexington:

“I didn’t really know what to expect,” the father said. “But I had a lot more comfortable feeling after being there, meeting those guys and seeing the school.

“Coach (Calipari) seemed like a real neat, genuine kind of guy. He was real personable. Derek and I both really liked Coach Calipari. I was surprised what they have going and the plans for the future.”

He, of course, still does not have an offer from either school and is still considering the Boilermakers, as well as Indiana, Xavier and Oklahoma State.  But the player that ESPN credits for being very skilled for his size, but needing to work on his maturity and his body, will apparently be in the mix for Kentucky’s 2013 class going forward.  So get to know his game.

What kind of player would consider Indiana? I would think that anyone with real talent would pick a program that had a little more upside than IU.

This would have been a good pick up 3-4 year’s ago. Cal has brought recruiting too a new level and he will be competing against top 25 guys every year for playing time. I think the kid has a good set of basketball skills with passing, shooting and dribbling. The only thing he lacks is something you can’t teach and is required in the DDM offense. Speed and Athleticism.

If ole boy can dunk (reverse, non-the-less) in jeans, he has to be good – right? Is this some type of code from the kid, wearing BLUE jeans – and blue jeans being in the jorts family???

I posted this in another thread on here, but when Willis’ dad says about UK Basketball “I was surprised what they have going and the plans for the future” it just makes me wonder if he is really that clueless. How can you be surprised by what Cal has going and the plans for the future if you have been paying any attention at all to UK/Cal the last 2 years?

Why would anybody in their right mind wanna go to Purdue? Ugly engineering major girls and in the middle of nowhere Indiana. It’s like Duke without the success.

This kid is no good. We don’t want him. We don’t care if he is a top 50 player. Coach P wants players he can mold into winners like Kyle ‘white lightning’ Kuric and some of our other ‘academics’…

I say pass. Even if this kid was a great player, which he’s not, I say pass. His dad would be another drama queen like Orton’s dad. We don’t need that. PLENTY of other kids in that class would love his spot. Besides, he’s not that good. I’ve watched the kid play three times. Not that impressed.

Don’t need this guy, still hanging on to daddy’s pantsleg. Surprised at one of the best college b ball’s teams ” plan for the future”, has he been living in a cave?

His dad actually said, “I was surprised what they had going on.” Seriously??? And they live in Bullitt County … Kentucky???? Have they been visiting Alaska for the last two years? Wait a minute, even the Aleuts know we’re the winningest team in college basketball!!!

Well, it would be very easy not to like this kid because his daddy sounds like a real idiotic prick…..however, we have to look past that. Its whats best for the kid and the program. If UK could really use him we should go after him….doesn’t sound like a great prospect but we need 4 year players too. We can’t just load up every year with 1’s and done. I trust Coach Cal to do his evaluation of this kid and make the best decision for the Cats.
In the mean time, this kids dad is obviously a big mouth that doesn’t think before he talks….so Cat fans don’t talk to him, he can only hurt the situation.

always need to have a few in state kids on the team…this kid still has 2 years of High school left…may be the best to come a long in a while. Dad is prob spending more time right now keeping up with his son’s games and just hears all that crap on the media about Cal.

I saw Dwight Howard catch a lob pass on that very goal, and after he dunked it, the entire backboard flopped against the support for the rest of the game. I think he broke it.

I’m sorry but I don’t see this kid being a SEC type player. The level of competition that he is facing in this video is a joke. But who knows, could be a player in a couple years. J Cal will evaluate and see…I think he is doing it to show that he is recruiting the in-state talent atleast “a little.” He should travel up to NKY to see Hatton play, kid can shoot the lights out
