Meet Dakari Johnson

Another day, another player for Cal to watch.  This time it was 6’9″ center Dakari Johnson, a teammate of Michael Gilchrist last season at St. Patrick’s and one of the top players in the class of 2014.  It wasn’t the first time that Calipari watched him in person – he saw him play with Gilchrist last season – and Kentucky is not an entirely foreign land to the New Yorker.  Johnson spent part of his middle school years at Sayre (shout out to my man Josh Hopkins) and camped in Louisville in April.  He’ll play his sophomore season at Montverde Academy in Florida (shout out to your man Michael Avery) and is also hearing from Georgetown, Syracuse, Louisville and pretty much the rest of the Big East.  He recently said Syracuse was recruiting him the hardest.  Because they have to.  Cal can calmly stalk his prey and then move in for the kill.

He’s big.

If you watched this kid at all when Gilchrist’s team was on TV, it’s easy to see why Cal is interested…

He just finished his freshman year and if you have seen any tape or games of his you would know he could dunk easy- please don’t base your insight on one tape before you see this kid ball. He’s a beast and will be a household name in the near future.

Looks kinda ambivalent about playing, but did have some nice post moves. Soft touch, but dude, if I had that height at that age, I would have ripped down the rim on a few of those.

Maybe he will develop some hops and a little more agility in the next couple years. He’s just a kid.
    We’ll see.

Dude looks incredibly slow and isn’t explosive. Just looks taller than everyone else. Beware of big men highlight reels that show him going up and under more than once. Not impressed

Good to FINALLY see a highlight clip that isnt 50 dunks!!! For those of you complaining, at least he has more than one freaking move!!! i think our 2010 team showed what a bunch of dunks get you “3-33” shooting in the elite 8. Im sick and tired of watching videos of another 6’5 black dude that can only dunk. Ill gladly take someone that can actually score without dunking. Sprinkle in a few shooters with all these so called great dunkers and we might actually win something some day.

The guy definitely appears to have soft hands and possess a passing ability. If he doesnt grow anymore, he would be in the mode of a Jones, Patterson type player. But odds are, he keeps growing, he’s just a sophomore. Well, I’m sure we are already kinda in on him from watchin Gilchrist, lets hope it helps us out. Looks like a top 10 player for sure.
