Media Approval Ratings: Chip Cosby

Now we get to someone I really like. The Lexington Herald Leader’s football columnist Chip Cosby is my kind of guy. He covers the UK football beat with authority, getting the good stories, all the while keeping a middle-of-the-road perspective. He is always full of humor and willing to talk to fans, usually spending large amounts of time debating the QB situation at UK with any person who recognizes him on the street (often beautiful ladies who think the Chipster is smooth). Unfortunately for Cosby, this is where he has to do most of his conversing, as the Herald Leader gives football about as much coverage as they do the 8th race at Aqueduct. But Chip perseveres neverthless, and has begun doing his football notebook more often, thus increasing his writing and stylings on a more frequent basis. To love Chip is to break him down, so here we go:

— Has an ability to find interesting stories throughout the team. This is important when doing the football beat, because there are so many players and most of them go virtually unknown by the UK fanbase. Cosby lets you know that Locke ran track, Tamme is a good guy and Dicky Lyons is crazy. Football guys gotta get the uncovered nuggets and Chip does that.

— Genuinely likes his job and it comes through. You would be surprised how many dont.

— Has a good back and forth with the players, which allows him to get the best scoops in football….and has been open to the internet from its inception, using it to his advantage, rather than simply blasting away.

— Not a ton on the work side. Most of his difficulties exist because he isnt given the space he needs by the Herald Leader staff. He isnt on a lot of secondary media outlets, likely because of his lack of notoriety. They should fix that.

— He did have a marijuana arrest….but so did PacMan Jones, and we know he is a good guy.

All in all, I am a big fan of Chip’s. He was one of our first ever radio guests and has been a friend to the site from the beginning. I like the way he covers the Cats and his lack of a spoiled attitude that infects so much of the UK media types. He also once taught the Intern in his college class, and thus his knowledge has directly attributed to the writing on this here blog. All in all, Chip is a rising star and is a big “yes” in my book.
