Max Smith out indefinitely, needs surgery

Joker Phillips announced today that starting quarterback Maxwell Smith is out indefinitely and will need surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left ankle. He will apply for a medical redshirt in hopes of salvaging a year of eligibility. Jalen Whitlow will start against Mississippi State.

Kentucky will now pull the redshirt off Patrick Towles in case he is needed to go at any point this season. Joker said Towles’ skill set is similar to Smith’s, so the staff will tweak the offense for the two freshman quarterbacks and their contrasting styles.

Wasted season for Towles if they put him in. Start Whitlow, backup with Newton. Yeah, Newton sucks, but so do our coaches. He and Joker can go out together. If I were Towles and forced to play in this disaster, I’d apply for a “crappy coaching decision red shirt” at the end of the year.

Saw that coming. If you saw the replays, you’d know that the injury to heel probably going to be worse than a typical sprain. Hell, a high ankle sprain still means you’re out like 6 weeks.
Maybe we can run a two quarterback offense with Whitlow and Towles. Might be our only chance of putting up an offense that can surprise defense. We could line up Whitlow whenever we put Towles in and put Towles out when we run plays with Whitlow behind center. They both could occasionally hand off, and Towles would throw more than Whitlow.

I hate to see Smith go down to injury. I hope he can recover and come back if that’s what he wants. It has to be devastating to him and his parents. God speed Max!
Having said that, i think i would have kept this under wraps and not announced the injury so MSU had to prepare for two quarterbacks instead of now just having to prepare for JW.

I hope circumstances require that the redshirt is pulled from Towles. That way all the fans can see for themselves how good the kid is right now. No player is more popular than the un-played backup quarterback, so put him in and everyone will confront the relative ability of the 4 quarterbacks together.

6 & 8 – Towles wants to burn his redshirt. His dad most definitely wants him to play. I’ve even heard that his granddad said he wouldn’t be back if he continued with the redshirt. What is painfully obvious is that Morgan Newton can’t make plays. Saturday has become much more interesting. I sure do feel sorry for Max Smith though and hope he recovers well from the surgery. I wonder if they’ll look at surgery on his shoulder also.

#10, South Cat: A “redshirt” is not something that is applied to Towles currently that keeps him from playing – it is a decision made after a player has not played in any games. Towles has had the opportunity to compete in practice to prove “he would be far and away the best they have got” and he hasn’t done that.

One thing I am sure about: If Towles offered Joker and Sanders the best chance of winning games, he would be playing. Anyone that thinks differently does not have a full understanding of competitive sports and trying to keep a job.

I find it admirable that they have stated their preference for redshirting Towles – a move that is pretty much putting his (and the program’s) future above their own.

What else is he to do? Yea he wasn’t ready at the beginning of the year, but this not the beginning of the year and we have two upperclassmen QBs who obviously cant perform. There is a difference in being able to coach and being able to keep up with the talent of an SC or anyone in the SEC. You people that get on here and criticize someone just because he pulled a red shirt of a kid that wants to play are losers!! You make those adjustments in spring and fall practice and if you don’t prepare for injuries during practice you end up with what happened at Florida. You can’t throw Newton on the field at QB at the last minute behind a porus O line and no running game. And good lord folks,,,,lets talk about performance and not skin color,,,,would not make any difference if Joker was green,,,not a D1 coach in my opinion.

I don’t wish injury on anyone (Smith) but I can’t wait to see Towles in action. Even though Whitlow has been playing, I believe Towles is still the better of the two and will be our QB of the future. Whitlow got the nod this year because of his athleticism ( a lot like Randall Cobb playing QB) and the coaches were able to simplify the offense. Towles is much like Smith in style and throwing ability. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year and we will have a quality coach for him next year.

Unless there are 5 possible wins left on the schedule (Highly unlikely if not impossible) then what is the point in burning a year on a guy who may be part of a brighter future. Even if Towles plays and wins against Vandy, Samford, Arkansas (only legitimate shots at wins left)we are still 4-8 not going to a bowl game. Don’t understand why everyone is getting worked up over Towles’ redshirt getting pulled? Yes that “was” the plan, and yes that “was” the best plan for his and the programs future, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Smith goes down, you can’t get anything out of Newton and your left with two frosh by default. The season isn’t even halfway over yet so if Patrick can get some playing time or take the job from Whitlow then he could stil play in over half the games this season and more importantly could potentially help win a handful of games later on in the season. It’s a no win situation throwing a true frosh QB out there in week 1 in the SEC. However, Towles and Whitlow both have now had a little more time to learn the system and get some reps in. Patrick could still end up playing in over half the games this season and start getting that valuable experience that it takes to be a successful QB in the SEC. Just don’t see all the outrage. He wants to play, his dad wants him to play, everyone wants him to play. It’s not like it’s week 10, its just the start of week 6, can’t see how that is a waste of a redshirt “if” he can actually contribute and help win some games this year.

  77. Mikey1286
    2:48 pm October 1, 2012 Permalink

I would argue it’s more valuable for Patrick to get that extra year in the playbook, weight room, and being in a program than possibly 3 – 6 games against top notch SEC defenses with a limited playbook and risk of injury.

The old saying goes with redshirting…you are trading your best year for your worst year. Just think if UK had redshirted Newton as a frosh? Newton actually played his best games as a wildcat as a frosh… I don’t really know what is the best thing to do, but it is obvious that UK’s current staff does not know how to develop and evaluate QB talent. I know, I know, Sanders coached P. Manning. However, newton has gotten worse every year he has been here. On top of that, according to reports it has been neck and neck for the starting QB position each year newton has been here. How could they not tell that every other QB has been better than Newton? I like Morgan Newton. He either gave up a few years ago, or the coaches have not prepared him.

If whitlow was the backup and only knew 10%, how much can you expect from a redshirt frosh who’s the 4th string qb. Only so many reps to get in and I bet he’s been getting very few if any. I am and have been a Towles fan (Elite 11, KHSAA title game) but unless whitlow goes down, I don’t want to see him in yet. Maybe he, max or whitlow leave. Who knows. But 5 games with only 1-2 winnable games, it’s not worth it for anyone.

The worse problem UK has is our overall lousy talent in the state of Kentucky and recruiting from elsewhere. WIth more talent, we have more depth. With more depth we can redshirt an obviously talented Cobb, Newton, Smith, Towles, Whitlow, etc. Yes Joker is over his head and lacks connection between he, his assistant coaches, and players. Yes the play calling has zero continuity. Yes the team appears to be uninterested at times, but this is the monster we must accept blame for as we have invested more in roundball. Even with the lackluster football Cats, they make more money than basketball will ever think about making. Why was Newton successful as a frosh winning 3 road SEC games a starter (we have yet to have another road SEC win), talent around him, hes smart, and sheer size to take those SEC hits and feature other talented players. If you read into his comments after the florida game, he told us that the talent is inferior and was dying to be the scape goat any longer. Newton cannot move the ball by himself and to think these other guys will be able to shows the overall lack of perception of people commenting on this site. He hasnt performed very well, but do you think he wants to run designed quarterback runs all game with an undersized offensive line, tiny running backs, and slow wide recievers. Not to mention our quarterback is always going to be playing from behind because the defense cannot stop anybody and the tight ends are nonexistent. We are just now weeding out wide recievers that were quarterbacks in high school. Unfortunate for Newton his career is over, and for Max his season is over, but to throw 2 18 year olds into the fire under these circumstances is begging for failure.

@83 – They do not get their rankings from their HS stats LOL. If that was the case every Boone County HS RB in the 90’s would’ve been a 5 star recruit. It’s laughable that you believe that. Towles played at Highlands. Do me a favor and look at their offensive numbers for the last 15 years. Their stats are amazing. Now tell me how many 4 and 5 star players that produced.

Competition and system can lead to very inflated stats. Now, so you understand, they get their rankings from camps, workouts, size, speed, strength, athletic ability, etc.

Towles may or may not be good, and I hope he is the next Peyton Manning. But high school stats literally have no determination in that factor.

    Pulling Towles redshirt is ridiculous.

First of all, he isn’t going to turn this season around no matter how good he is. I understand the argument that he will gain valuable experience – which is true. But, you’ve now put your two leading QBs on the same schedule, not to mention Whitlow. If Smith gets his redshirt, all 3 will have 3 years of eligibility and “valuable” experience….

Sounds like a recipe for a couple of transfers, or 3, if you ask me. Best case is they all stick around and we’re wasting scholies on overly talented 2nd and 3rd string QBs who you can ny hope NEVER see the field.

Ride the season out with Whitlow with and Newton as his back up.

#79. You hit the nail on the head, inadvertently I think.

You’ve nailed exactly why Joker needs to go, now.

Take Newton as an example. He was a very highly thought of QB prospect. Somehow, all this talent has disappeared. This brings up 2 questions.

    1. How could Joker and company not take a nationally recognized QB prospect and at the very least groom him into a serviceable SEC QB?

    2. If he wasn’t going to work out as a QB, why did it take them until the 4th game of his Senior season to figure this out?!?!? AND, this includes a redshirt year!!!!!

We all wanted Joker to work out, and, he is a great recruiter, but he needs to go and go now.

He needs to be fired immediately and Barnhard needs to start interviewing high profile candidates to generate some buzz – no matter whether any are actually have any interest or not. Hopefully this generates some interest in the program and maybe keep some of the talent Joker recruited committed and on the team.

59, South cat:are you for real? your going to point to high school stats as reasoning for one player to start over another?! first off i’m going to assume you know nothing about the make-up of either high school team and all of the variables that could go into why a qb’s numbers were what they were. secondly, if you’re not familiar with the high school fb landscape, alabama 6A football is extremely competitive and loaded with D1 talent…needless to say KY high school fb, at any level, pales in comparison. and finally, if the coaches say whitlow has looked better and more prepared to this point who in the world are you to disagree? how many practices did you go to? with joker’s job clearly on the line i guess it makes perfect sense to you that he wouldn’t start the qb that gave them the best chance to win now? next time please think before you speak, you’re only making yourself look like a complete idiot when you spew such nonsense.

Best news for Joker. Max Smith being out for the year is possibly his only shot at saving his job…..hear me out Joker Hater, I think he is as good as gone too. We have gotten worse each year and the attendance has fallen off the map. The writing is on the wall for a new coach. That said, we have played 13 true freshmen this season and we probably have one of the youngest teams in the entire country, not just the SEC. If Joker can find a way to win with two true freshmen QB’s and make us competitive agaisnt the remaining teams on our schedule than it will be easy for him to spin that the future of the program is bright. I don’t know what he would have to do to earn another season, but I think Max being out just lowered the bar of wins he needs to come back. Going into the season he needed 6 to keep his job, I think the number is 4 or 5 now. I still don’t think we get to 4-5 wins, but I think no Max Smith and freshmen/sophomores at the majority of positions will get him more time if he can win.
