University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Max Smith is your starter

What we all already knew is now official: Max Smith is the starting quarterback for your University of Kentucky Wildcats. Joker made the decision Sunday night after watching film from Saturday’s scrimmage. He called it a tough decision, saying it wasn’t as obvious as people may think, but Max puts the team in the best position to win.

Rashawn will be by later with more from Monday’s practice.

Until then, Go Cats.

We MUST beat Loserville. Joker has been well too conservative the last few years. It’s time to turn the Big Blue Machine loose!!!

    Cats: 34
    Loserville: 28

Wish Newton would take a shot at another position. He’s athletic enough to be useful somewhere else.

Im interested in seeing jalen witlow. Max may be the starter now but rumors going around saying Witlow may be challenging Newton for the 2nd string. If smith can’t get it done I will lose support for this team if Joker goes to Newton. He cracks under pressure. We need to give either Witlow or Towles their shot because they’re our future. Newton got his shot in his freshman year, although it was because hart line was hurt. Massakowski never got his shot and was basically run out of Lexington and is having a decent career. We need to give each freshman a fair shot if we can’t do anything else.

    1) Joker wants to save his job.

    2) We all knew this was the ONLY answer, why did it take so long?

    3) Smith is not going to be enough – should have recruited better players to put with him.

Either way, the Cayuts are going to get stomped on the 2nd.

    4) as much as I’d like to agree with ya, I really cant. If Newton is good enough
to play than he’s good enough to play. Its a 4 year scholly. If Joker thinks
he’s the #2 QB than let it be.

Cards win by at least 28. UK doesn’t care about football. Joke will be on uofl’s staff next year and will be in charge of cleaning jockstraps.

If starting is based a play last year, the Spring game, and parctice thus far,how could Smith not be the starter? However, there will always be those who support someone else, and will continually question Joker and Sanders. Some UK fans will never be satisfied regardless of who in the qb.

#4 – Why do you want to see Towles this year so bad? It’s very likely that part of Newton’s problem is that he was shoved out there in his true freshman season. As most football fans will tell you, the odds of Towles doing well as a true freshman in the SEC are slim-to-none. Why rush him onto the field to get his ass kicked by good, seasoned SEC linemen and linebackers and make him shell-shocked? You just don’t do that to freshman QBs in the SEC.

I assume it’s the mentality that is carrying over from basketball — freshman standouts carrying the team, etc. That just does not happen in football at the QB position. At least not often.

Towles needs to redshirt for the benefit of the team and for himself. 5th year senior season is ALWAYS better than a true freshman season, barring an injury.

Additionally, if Joker throws Towles or Whitlow out there in a cheap attempt to please the fans, and then one of them gets injured taking 10 sacks a game, then he deserves to be fired more than ever.

I’m sorry but this just blows my mind.. we have to be able to do better than this.. A school with the reputation like kentucky in sports and the best we can recruit is max smith?? joker needs to be gone. you can’t tell me a school the size of kentucky and being in the sec can’t come up with something better.. unbelievable!!

The better question is… Who will start next year… Smith or Towles?

  18. Hey Rick

Freshmen QB’s have done fine if they are good enough Matt Stafford, Chad Henne, Peyton Manning, Matt Barkley to name a few. That year gives them experience against real defense doing real things. Mr Towles is considered a top recruit. No matter when they take the field, freshman or senior, they need time facing defenses to get acclimated to the speed of the game and the schemes they will face so why not get them started early and get that experience under their belt.

Also Morgan Newton as a true freshman was also adequate(not great)enough to be the QB in games UK won at Auburn and at Georgia.

#18 none of those QBs played at UK. They played at big time football schools and were exceptionally talented as young QBs. Our best QBs in recent years…Couch, Lorenzen, & Woodson either shared time or didn’t play at all as freshmen. Towles is talented but not in the same class as those mentioned.

Morgan Newton was able to be adequate enough because he had Randall Cobb. Cobb made everyone a lot better than they actually were (Hartline).

sorry…Lorenzen did start as a freshman but was a disaster. Also, he probably should have never started over Dusty Bonner. He eventually had to fight for time with Shane Boyd.

I wouldn’t say Lorenzen was a disaster his freshman year…but, Dusty Bonner should have started that year. He took us to a bowl game the year before, but he had James Whalen. We were beating Syracuse in the Music City Bowl until Whalen got injured. Whalen caught everything. Not sure that we would have made bowl again with Bonner, but he should have kept his job. Lorenzen didn’t really take it from him.

#18 – the difference in those quarterbacks and someone in Towles or Whitlow’s position is that they all had good offensive linemen to make sure that they weren’t destroyed. They also had good receivers and running backs. UK has a lot of young, untested players and a difficult SEC schedule.

The quarterback position is covered between Smith and Newton, and there’s really no need to waste a year of Towles’ eligibility. Now, if Smith and Newton suck in the first few games and Joker, in a ploy to shut the fans up, throws in Towles, and the guy is just amazing and leads us to a bowl, I’ll be on here eating my words.
