Matt Smith and Morgan Newton are Men of Character

Uk Athletics

UK Athletics

During halftime of tonight’s game against Mississippi State, Morgan Newton and Matt Smith will join 16 other student-athletes that will be inducted into the Frank G. Ham ‘Society of Character’. Even though Andrew Wiggins and the Untouchables should be enough to fill the seats of Rupp Arena, I’m sure there will still be people fighting in the seats to get their best view of Morgan Newton.

The Society of Character was founded in the 1998-99 school year to honor Wildcats who have shown an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, and career preparation while serving as a role model. Matt Smith got the job done on the field- serving as this year’s Offensive Team Captain- as well as off the field, taking a mission trip to Ethiopia with Joker Phillips and others over the summer. Newton may have been highly scrutinized in his 4 years, but he consistently kept a positive attitude throughout. He had phenomenal grades during his time earning SEC Honor Roll each year, and is genuinely a very nice person to talk to.

It’s a shame character can’t completely passes or win conference games.

    We suck again!

I would like to see a link of past winners. I am glad that character counts for something. True character is not an award… is just something you either have or don’t have and is highly under rated.

#2 right. And #1 above apparently doesn’t have it.

While he seems nice, Morgan Newton has stiffed servers twice at Rafferty’s. Great testament of character! He was nice at least to serve.

Seth Blann for golf? Ha wonder how in depth they look at the criteria on that one. Kid cries when he plays bad and looks upset when watching better golfers play better than him, definitely not a role model younger golfers should look up to

Becoming a good man is more enduring than a good season or two on the field or court. Congratulations to both. High character means a lot. I have lost all respect for Alabama football after their most recent incident. Thugs knocking out and robbing students on campus who are paying for an education is sad. Let’s hope we never get to that.

That comment about Morgan is uncalled for. Nick I bet Morgan is 10 times the athlete that you are. Not that he had a great career but we also know that he did not have the greatest coaching. That was uncalled for.

Matt when you gonna get these snotty nose brats that have been involved with UK sports for four years and NO NOTHING, OFF THIS SITE!
