Matt Smith a Finalist for Wuerffel Trophy

Senior C Matt Smith has been named as one of the eight finalist for the Danny Wuerffel Trophy. The trophy honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Smith has worked with a Salvation Army summer camp for the past three years and, this past summer, embarked on a humanitarian mission trip to Africa with head coach Joker Phillips, S Mikie Benton, and G Larry Warford.
“The All Sports Association membership is honored to recognize the 2012 Wuerffel Trophy finalists and nominees,” commented All Sports President Chad Hamilton. “These student athletes embody the Wuerffel Trophy traits of service, character, and excellence, and they are outstanding ambassadors for college football.”
“It’s always good to be recognized for the hard work you do, but that’s not the reason I do volunteer. I eventually want to go to into a teaching or coaching role so working with kids around (Kentucky) means a lot,” Smith said. “When I was their age, I always used to look up to the football players here at Kentucky, so I just try and set a good example for the next generation of kids.”
Congratulations, Matt. Great job.

So he’s going to reenact the devastating pass to Chris Doerring? Perfect.
