Matt Jones, your thoughts on the Enes Kanter ruling?

Over at the pretty house across town that he moved into, our good buddy Matt Jones does what he does best.  He put his fancy education to good use and broke down the strange inconsistencies in the high-profile NCAA rulings lately and how they make the choice to sit Enes Kanter permanently a bit peculiar.  Matt says a lack of coherent reasoning in the Ohio State, Josh Selby and Cam Newton cases add up to some question marks for Enes.

Still not convinced to check out out?   Take a look at this little tidbit on the permanent ineligibility:

While that decision might seem a bit irrational, viewed in the abstract, it could at least be defended.  But of course, the NCAA does not operate in a vacuum, and over the course of the last three months has issued three high-profile decisions allowing three high-profile players to compete despite amateurism violations.  Each could be defended with some tenuous logic when released, but when viewed together with the Kanter decision, no consistent theme can be found.

See, I told you he was getting all fancy and smart.  And making us pretty darn proud too.  Make sure you check it out (another link if you missed the first) and then, as usual, think about, talk about it.  NCAA, if you’re reading this, you can feel free to do the same.

The NCAA’s press release strongly emphasized that previous eligibility situations do not create precedent for future ones. This, of course, is bullshit. When dealing with the byzantine process that makes up NCAA eligibility, there are inevitably going to be situations that require a substantial amount of discretion in making decisions. We’ve seen that in each of the recent high profile eligibility situations. But when you pair this liberal discretion with an utter lack of constraint from precedent, it allows your to take two identical situations, rule them in completely opposite ways, and not violate any of your own regulations in the process. This obviously flies in the face of fairness, which at its core requires that similarly situated persons be treated similarly.

Sketchy to bring up Selby, them are some dark blue shades Jones, Jon Wall shouldve been considered a pro by those standards. How thick headed some people are, Enes cashed checks from a pro club, Selby DID NOT get money from the lakers or the celtics or any other pro team.

A true injustice has been done to this young man. How many have ever played organized basketball and been part of a team? Look at the picture of Enes on the bench staring at the other players. What would he give to be part of the game. How would you feel to be on the bench and told you can’t play?

16)But there is no denying that he (Selby) knew not to take the money from the a NBA player manager (Carmelo). The difference is these rules are much more likely to be unknown in Turkey. Here I have known since Dirt Bowl days if you take money from an agent or manager, you can forfeit your amateur status. No excuse for kids in this country, Definitely no excuse for college players, Ohio State has 6 compliance officers Florida 4. Auburn hell they have been hiring probably. But there is NO way those kids simply “did not know”. Did Jeremy Jarmon get the luxury of not knowing when he took a weeks worth of Ripped Fuel or whatever for 4 days before he realized the mistake, while rehabing? Poor little Cat fans. The big bad NCAA won’t let a pro play on your team. If you think the NCAA is wrong in this case, then you must think the NCAA was also wrong to allow Randolph Morris to play. That whole ordeal was a total farce. The NCAA did you a favor on that one. Also, had Bledsoe gone to any other school (like UT, UNC or uofl) you would be screaming from the rooftops that he should have been ruled ineligible. Any logical person would believe that Bledsoe could not have graduated high school and made those grades on his own. Cal tried to pull another fast one, and this time it did not work. Get over it. I’m sure Kanter will be taking a pay cut in the NBA as well.

Ok we all probably saw this coming for a while now (which still does not change the fact that it is complete BS). However, I feel that one of the biggest impacts of the ruling is that Enes cannot practice with the team. This means that Enes is no longer pushing Jorts every day to get better. Let’s just hope that Jorts continues to improve so we can “Win one for the Enes”!!!!

This ruling has done more to damage the NCAA’s Reputation and credibility than anything that it could have done to the kid or our program. They are nothing but a fickle group of figure heads that rule off the cuff. If their Bi Laws and standards are not specific enough to make consistent ruling, they should change them. Of course that would then hold their feet to the fire and make them rule in a consistent manner. But instead, they will of course continue to do what they want, when they want. The best interest of the STUDENT ATHLETE is no where in their purview…that is obvious. They can suck my Enes..

Thanks for all the support guys. Just keep fighting the good fight and remember I’m the real victim here. I had no knowledge of the following throughout my coaching career:

That Camby took money to go to a school that no other good player would have gone to.

That Derick Rose got 12’s on his first two ACT tests and went to Detroit and aced it. The fact that WWW lives there is just a coincidence.

That Eric Bledsoe wasn’t an honors student and a math Wiz.

That Kanter was turned down by multiple prep schools and had very few offers from other schools.

I can go on and on. You get the point. I am just a victim of circumstance. Thanks for believing in me.

I’m not an attorney by any means but, the NCAA is making rules and applying them arbitrarily. These rules effect millions and millions of dollars for the member schools and the athletes whether the NCAA is a non-profit or not. To be in that position there must be some rule of law that applies? Am I wrong?

At least he can get his education. Coach Cal and Enes’s dad, Helmet, said he came to the states for an education and a degree. That is still achievable. The good news is the basketball team will now have Enes around until he earns that degree.

I’m amazed at the narrow minded negative comments towards Kanter. If you hate UK fine. You still have to find it in your brain to see the NCAA was not right. Kanter could have accepted millions to play in Europe and DID NOT…that says it all. Hey I grew up in Lex and know I’m a real fan of my team. I don’t lie to myself. We know Wall broke a rule. He paid it back and sat out for a couple games. On the other hand Bledsoe turned his life around and worked his ass off and is now a millionaire. The effed up thing is if Wall, Bledsoe or Kanter was on your team you would agree with me. But because you hate UK being the BEST you take a mindless position just to be a shit. Anyway I’m not going to loose any sleep over it because when I wake up I get to pull for the BEST COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEAM EVER. And you will wake up wishing your team could maybe beat us once in a decade. Good luck with that.

Whose money paid for this decision? Did all the SEC schools band together to afford this? Was it the jaded Washington-loyal NCAA leader paying us back for Jones? Did one or some of the traditionally poewrful programs act? Did Kansas get a multiple pay-off discount since they already paid once for the Selby decision? Given the lack of leadership demonstrated by the NCAA to act on agent-related issues in addition to the obvious inconsistency revealed here today, I am anticipating a slow decline in which the distaste for the NCAA forces the creation of something better.

The NCAA needs to be forced to explain themselves comprehensively and coherently. If they cannot, then UK should consider starting its own collegiate athletics association and leaving the NCAA behind. We have to consider that we might be better off without them, and that there are other athletic programs out there that might be feeling the same thing.

    Mr. Emmert,
I am writing in regards to the Enes Kanter ruling. First of all I am a UK basketball fan, but none the less if Enes was at another university and I followed his situation I would feel like the 18 year old kid was treated unfair. I just really feel sorry for Enes, from what I understand he did everything possible to stay within the NCAA rules. I think I would understand if the other recent high profile cases where handled in a similar manner. These athletes grew up in this country and have no excuse for not understanding that you do not take money or gifts to play college athletics.

This was my email to the president.

How can you rule someone ineligible if to insure their amateur status they came to the united states just to play high school basketball? Selby was giving money but was only suspended for how many games? Cam Newton? Ohio State? The NCAA just doesn’t want uk to be back on top anymore and every little mess up that the university has will be widely criticized. The biggest question I have now is if they were willing to pay the money back, why couldn’t they just do that and let him play? He was under the age of 18 and wasn’t legally allowed to handle money In This case. Stupidity rules the world. Another question is what happens if the NBA OSS to a lockout an players decide to stay in college for four years, what is Kentucky suppose to do with all their top class recruits? Will we get more scholarships?

I’m over the Kanter ruling. He won’t play. I’m not over my frustration with the NCAA. Its the same with any organization, consistency is the only way to maintain confidence. Once you lose consistency you lose confidence. I should never have to be told or have it explained to me that ones actions are consistent. If that has to be done the detrimental impact to confidence is already irreparable. The NCAA has positioned themselves for irrelevance. Just as the NIT had done before it. NCAA you had a good 40 year run and constructed one heck of a monopoly. Time for the next in line to step up and do what has failed to be done as evidenced by the falling all-over-themselves of the past several years. Between player eligibility contradictions, BCS snaffoo, etc. there is no reviving the NCAA. Start over.

Camby was a junior at UMASS accepting money from an outside agent..yet Corey Maggette does the same at Duke his freshman year…nothing is said. Kanter, sorry your claim that many prep schools past on him and no college wanted him, I know its hard to get media reception on dixie highway but Kanter committed to Washington first, you know the school that Quincy Miller dipped on u for. Bledsoe, um investigated, and have you ever seen the blindside?, go take Michael Oher’s college eligibility away for his grades. Rose, clearing house cleared him. Btw, didn’t uofl hire teagues high school coach, I’m sorry he didn’t want to lose so he chose another school. The Next Capricious Athletic Announcement should have been disbanded years ago. The ruling on Kanter, Moses Ayegba, Guy-Marc Michel, Ohio State football players are reprehensible. Dee Bost actually did declare to be a professional, but they found a way to make him eligible. The expectation that a parent in a foreign country would even know their rules and be able to follow them is even more ridiculous any more than a student from U. S. would know a foreign country’s rules. Just look at how many compliance officer positions there are in this country just trying to deal with their rules. What is truly amazing to me, unlike legal cases, is that intent was not part of the decision. Kanter was also a minor at the time, he didn’t turn 18 until after he was enrolled in college, so any money went to his father, not him. Cam Newton’s father solicited for payment after Cam was of legal age, but was unsuccessful, so Newton is ruled eligible. In 2010 I read two articles (which I couldn’t locate) one of a Australian BB player, and his ordeal, The other was a walk-on student who was ruled permanently ineligible because his father was a sports agent. What is the threshold for over compensation received between $5700 & $33,000+? What would have happened if M. Kanter returned the excess funds to F. Club before the NCAA investigation started? As for me, I would like a T-shirt with #8 4 N S [Number 8 for Enes]
