OK Matt and others on this show thread: Do you agree with the following? Srry Its so long…

The Joker Train has left the station as well as Nuclear Minter. The #1 target is going to be Mike Leach. My thing is I do not see him leaving the situation he is in now to come to UK. Think about it, he is currently in a conference that really a defense isn’t needed and the only team he really has to focus on beating is Oregon in his division. He has a great recruiting class and a hell of a QB and WR’s there already. He is looking at a pretty easy road to get 8/9/10 wins… say he does that and still gets beat by Oregon. All it takes is USC and Stanford beating them and he could be looking at a Pac-12 title and a Rose Bowl. You telling me he is going to give that up to be a very mediocre SEC team? I think not.
While the main thing you need is a Head coach I think what needs to be focused on is the defensive coordinator… In the SEC offense does not win games… defense does. How many times have you watched South Carolina look AWFUL on offense and still win games? It is because even though the only score 10- they can prevent the other team from scoring more. Why do you think UF is undefeated? Not b/c of their offense…UK’s recruiting is NEVER going to change. We will always get the 2 and 3 star athletes that UF/Bama/LSU/UGA didn’t want. We need a developer… someone that can take those guys and even though they may stink while being a freshman… by the time they are Seniors they are as big and as fast as any other SEC talent. Once we can do that we need to develop depth… we have to get to the point where we can redshirt almost every recruiting class and develop depth. And we need to adopt a policy like bobby Bowden had… you may be a WR or TE or QB but we (UK) are going to play you where you will be most successful…. In his operation Morgan Newton would not be on the bench… he would be a LB or TE. Aaron Boyd would not be a WR… he would be a TE… Boyd lacks the foot speed to be a great WR. For Example (Hakeem Warrick’s best position was supposed to be Free Safety).

But the fact of the matter is that UK is not going to hire Petrino, I don’t see Leach or Jay Gruden coming, I don’t want Tressell, (he is 1-10 vs. SEC with the ability to recruit big name talent to a big name school… why do we think he will be able to win now?). The smart idea would be someone like Skip Holtz or Ohio’s HC or a hot OC or DC at a big name college (Preferable a DC). But that is going to take Mitch saying “what is it going to take to get you at UK and then matching that request?”… The harsh reality is that Mitch will go get Tommy Tuberville or Houston Nut and we will repeat the same ol’ cycle.

juST WANT TO THROW A COACHING NAME OUT THERE THAT WOULD BE A GREAT FIT. Whoops caps key was on. Anyway the guy that impresses me is Troy Calhoun of Air Force. 1. He does a lot with the talent he gets for a service academy, in other words he “over-achieves” which is something every coach at UK needs to do. 2. He plays in a non BCS conference and gets paid less that Joker, so the UK job will be a step up in both salary and conference strength. 3. He plays a unique highly disciplined game of football, his teams have consistently ranked at the top of the NCAA for rushing yards, at air force by the way! They run a similar style of offense as GA Tech. 4. He is young but not young enough to jump from UK should he have sucess. He is a great age where he only has one maybe two more jobs left in him so he wont just jump at the first sign of sucess. 5. He was a finalist for the TX AM job before they gave it to K.Sumlin so he has earned interest from big time programs. 6. Air Force for being a service academy has been a solid program the last few years, they almost beat Michigan last week. Keep your eye on this team, Im telling you its an out of the box move that would be great for UK.

Other than Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern University, who will not come to UK. this guy would be great for UK. Mario Cristobal from FIU is having kind of a bad year.

  59. Coach Durbin

    2) Agree with some of the sentiments, but to refute a couple of things. First, Washington State is NOT good. Yes, you saw them beat a bad UNLV team on Friday, but they are several years away. Saying Oregon is their only obstacle is like saying beating Tenneesee is the only thing stopping us from a BCS championship. Washington and Stanford are good this year, and it appears Cal is beginning to turn it around after an abysmal start to the season. In addition, Utah will always be tough. That being said, you might be right about him liking that situation more than moving to the SEC. However, coaches have enormous egos, and always want to prove they can do it in the best conference. Something else to consider, if he were to leave to come to UK after being @ WSU for only 1 year, what’s to lead you to believe he wouldn’t leave UK to take a bigger SEC/BIG12/BIG10 job after his first successful season here? I am a supporter of the Mike Leach possibility, but it’s definately something to consider.

Aaron Boyd was approached re: switching to TE and declined. That’s not on the coaches. By all accounts, this is the first year he has focused on developing as a player. Unfortunately for him it will be too little too late.
