Matrix: Reloaded, UK vs. UofL Basketball Recruiting

Basketball Recruiting: We on that John Calipari grind

Yesterday I posted this blog post from College Football Matrix comparing the recruiting efforts of the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville in college football. I decided to duplicate their effort for basketball, simply to see UK come out on top. Like that graph, I also plotted an overall average for the past three years of rankings. I used the previous three years in each comparison to College Football Matrix’s four just so we could have an averaged ranking of one for the 2011 aggregate.

Obviously this chart will look much different after a few more years with John Calipari, but interesting to note is that while UK’s recruiting has been on an obvious and predictable climb in the past few years, U of L has had a relatively steady recruiting decline since 2006. I’d love to redo this chart in a few years and compare the flat line UK has at the top to the flat lined nature of U of L basketball in general.

Could we get JD from the radio call-in to be guest coach? I want him to stroll out in an all-purple pimp suit.

NR, 7th, 5th, 9th, NR, 6th, 16th, NR, 9th…Yeah…Louisville looks like they’ve been in a steady decline…He’s had two bad classes since 2003 and out of those 2 years that they weren’t ranked…2003 – He got 4 year player Brandon Jenkins who scored over 800 points, in 2007 he got 1,000 point scorer Preston Knowles, and in 2010 when he got Gorgi Dieng, who by all accounts is loaded with potential.

    UK

    18th, 1st, NR, 16th, 11th, 21st, 1st, 1st, 1st….

Until Calipari’s system allowed him to move players through it at a rapid pace, UK wasn’t exactly burning up the recruiting trail either…Some coaches don’t have the luxury of offering 4 or 5 guys starters minutes every summer as a selling point…therefore its why you hardly ever see the same school with the top class every year..Until UK started its run in 2009 the #1 classes, were Florida State, UK (FSU was 16th), Oklahoma State (UK was NR), UNC (OSU was NR), KSU (UNC was NR) UCLA (KSU was NR), UK (UCLA was 9th)…..Programs typically build off of the highly rated recruiting classes and thus don’t need to load up again the next year, its why UL’s classes are staggered like they are….its why you dont see the same team consistently get the #1 class…

Hey 6, Kentucky sucked at recruiting before Calipari because tubby was a complete bafoon. Gillispie was a continuation of the tubby debacle but tubby is solely to blame for such horrid overall recruiting.
