Mark Stoops to Interview Two Former Cats

neal brown

KSR has learned that Mark Stoops will be interviewing Neal Brown for the Offensive Coordinator position and Chad Scott for the RB Coach position. The interview is scheduled to be today and could lead to a decision rather quickly. Both Brown and Scott have UK ties and should be exciting for UK fans. Brown is a proponent of the “Air Raid” attack and Scott is considered one of the best young position coach recruiters in America. We will keep you updated as the information develops today.

#1, I think we are still going to take a lot of lumps, especially in-conference, with our usual murderer’s row of a schedule. But these hires will bring some much needed energy to the football program, and within a few years, hopefully Coach Stoops will have us on the good side of .500, and hopefully competitive in most of our games.

hmmm, not that Brown wont do really well, I am sure he will, but no team can run the “air raid” AND have a great defense. It just doesnt work. Air raid means score, and score quickly, but that usually leaves your defense on the field long stretches, giving up tons of yards and points.

I agree with #4, it will be exciting, and less draw plays/bubble screens, but to think the talent on last years team will transform into a contender by next seaason is virtually impossible. Given 3-4 years I can see us making a run at an SEC East, but anything will be better than what weve seen over the last 3 years

Let me get this straight – Charlie Strong is leaving uofl and not going to coach them in the bowl game? Think its too late to get Northern Illinois – they will at least put up a fight.

Or maybe we should offer a 2-10 UK team, after all, as Charlie Strong says, the Big Blue Nation travels WELL and could take over the Frence Quarter for New Years.

#7 what in the world are you talking about?

  10. 6, tell that (the 1st paragraph) to Mark’s brother Bob. As soon as he got the OK job he called Mike Leach and said he hired him because of how hard UK’s offense was to stop. I think the Air Raid coexisted with his defense quite nicely.

  11. However 6, that doesn’t mean it’s not a concern. I posted this several times a couple weeks ago, but it’s a very interesting article:

so bottom line, who is the best fit for our new found prowess at football ? used to love watching the air raid, but the outcome wasnt always stellar. we want to win, and win often. liking the emphasis on a strong D too. Go CATS ! turn the corner and make us a winner coach Stoops !

  14. BTW, how is Chad Scott tied to UK? I looked him up on Texas Tech’s site and couldn’t find it.

Wish chad scott could suit up for us. He was nasty when healthy-i hated it when he transferred, but he needed to escape the mumme debacle. sounds like a good hire to me

  16. Ahhh, never mind. It does say on the Tech page that he was at UK before transferring to UNC.

I hope we get them both, even is Scott did transfer to the baby blue!

    Chad Scott left UK.
I do not believe that he should return to be an assistant coach.
How can he tell recruits how great UK is, when he was there and transferred

since Louisville thinks they have risen to the ranks of college football power house, due to a tie in to the bcs through an extremely weak conference affiliation, id love to see florida crush them, and hold them to zero. i hope charlie strong leaves them too. never heard so much crowing over so little output. go gators…….just this one time !

Reading all of these articles about future assistants etc.; you’d think we were Alabama or something. All of these guys are “One of the best recruiters in the Country”. When one of them declines the job we move on to another guy who is actually “the best recruiter” and better than the first option. Now I’m very excited about the future but come on man, if we have learned anything as UK football fans it’s temperance.

22 = Best comment on this site in a month. Very true. Remember how Joker’s staff 3 years ago were signing tons of recruits who had “SEC speed” and “SEC size”? Remember when Rick Minter’s blitzkrieg defense was coming to Lexington? Let’s cool down all the hype.

#13 – “Outcome wasn’t always stellar” (regarding Air Raid)? When WAS the outcome always stellar at UK? Even Bear Bryant barely eeked out a 52% winning percentage in the SEC at UK. The Air Raid produced the only back-to-back .500 years in SEC play since Fran Curci. Curry and Brooks each had one .500 year in seven years while Mumme produced two in four years with two different QBs. True, the defense was awful, and he was too stubborn in keeping his long-time buddy as DC, but if you can go 4-4 in the SEC with a bad defense, I don’t think you can knock the offensive scheme that was in place.

If we get Neal Brown, we will have two of the three criteria that I wanted in a coach: 1) Recruiting ties outside of the southeast and 2) High-powered, spread offense. The only one we didn’t get was previous head coaching experience, but we were probably always going to have to hope to fall ass-backwards into a good coach anyway.

Only thing that concerns me a little is that in order to run an Air Raid-style offense, they move fast. They score fast. The defense for such a team needs to be like the Colts when they had Peyton Manning: Ball hawking, pass rushing, opportunistic. And that’s because teams will have to keep up with our scoring. Our defense will need to be able to get off the field despite not having a lot of rest.

Also, I assume one of Stoops’ stipulations to Brown will be that while he wants him to run a crazy scoring offense, we’ll need to be able to grind the ball at times. It’ll be interesting to see if he can get these 2 guys and put together a great defense.

there is a major misconception about neal brown’s offense. It is not Hal mumme’s offense. NB throws the ball down field. Mumme did not. Go to Youtube and watch some actual games from this year and you will see what I mean. Peolpe need to get a clue.

6-we’re prob not going to win sec title with neal brown’s offense. but if our defense can be top 50ish then we should have a winning record & compete/upset some teams. and that’s when our recruiting could actually start to gain momentum & really improve.

I hope if Neal Brown and Chad Scott join the staff they bring along former UK player and Troy O Line coach John Schlarmann. He would be a great fit in Lexington. Love to see fomer CATS come back to Lexington.

31 Are you really concerned about scoring too fast? UK’s offense was 3-and-out for about half this season. If we’re out in 3 plays with a TD, who the f cares?

I think everyone is taking for granted that the legislature is going to issue the bonds for the improvements. UK better have some folks working for them to make sure this thing actually has a chance of happening.
