University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Mark Stoops is Kentucky’s new head football coach

Finally, the search is over.

Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has agreed to a deal that will make him the new head football coach of your University of Kentucky Wildcats.  An official announcement from the university is expected later this afternoon.

Stoops, the younger brother of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, is a rising star in the coaching world and one Big Blue Nation should be very excited about.  His Seminole defense ranks second in yards per game this season and is among the top 10 teams in almost all defensive categories.

We’ll have more on the hire throughout the day.  Until then, Go Cats.

Great! This man knows football. Don’t know how long it will take him to get the players he needs to do what he wants them to do but make no mistake, this could be more than a homerun. If he can recruit (and I think he can), it could be a grand slam!
Mike M. would have been a good choice also, but he will not want to leave his present situation until his son graduates high school.
I really think that if those who are disgruntled will give him three years, they will be saying Petrino who?

IF this is true then it’s time for me to get behind this coach because I do wish him and his staff the absolute best. I do think out of all of the coordinators that were mentioned for this position that he was the better choice. His pedigree will help him a lot with the BBN and on the recruiting trail. He will no doubt be able to form a strong staff around him. He knows how to develop athletes and men. He will mesh well with Calipari instead of fighting against him for the spotlight. He may not have been mine or many people’s first choice but the chaos is over and GO GET’EM COACH STOOPS!

I think he was the 3rd best (realistic) option.

If he can do something fun and exciting on offense….we might have a chance. If we implement the same old boring pro-style crap, we’re going to be in for a lot of 3-5 win seasons under Mike.

    @ 100

Tell that to Texas A and M. Seems to be that offense is exactly what can win.

You’re going to have a lot harder time convincing the top defensive recruits to come here over Alabama running a similar system than you do the offensive prospects running a system that’s exciting and wide open.

I’m not anti-Stoops. I just fear he’s going to run this like it was a regular SEC school, at least not now. No matter who his connections and his brother is, you’re not going to out-SEC the SEC at Kentucky.

It comes down to who his OC is going to be for me.

I was in the Petrino camp because I felt he was the most likely to generate on-the-field success. I can get on board with Stoops and get excited about the hire, but I do want to hear the presser and get a sense for his vision. I’m a little nervous, like others, that he will try and line up man for man and ‘whip ’em.’ Unfortunately, that’s a tried and true recipe for failure at UK. I have to admit, after Petrino I favored MacIntyre, but I really thought any of the Mac/Dykes/Stoops trio would be a good pickup. I assume he and Barnhart discussed his vision for how to win at UK and Barnhart is a believer. I’m actually more excited to see how the staff fills out than I was about the naming of the head man!

I seriously don’t understand people who are fans when it obviously does nothing but make them miserable and brings pain. This group has relentlessly tried to convince me that we should take UofL’s sloppy seconds which was even worse. I work with a lot of UL fans and would NEVER have heard the end of it if we were to have hired you know who, it wouldn’t have mattered whether we were successful or not. If we weren’t it would have just proven how much better of a program they are than UK and if we were successful it would have been because we rode their coattails. It was lose-lose IMO AND he was a jerk, still don’t know why so many wanted him.

No matter how many turnovers you have on offense, it doesn’t give your defense an excuse for giving up 5.2 yards per carry throughout the game. For example, UK gave up less yards per carry to UF’s offense this year.

On one hand I wont blame Stoops defense in points allowed. I will question their ability to stop the run, however, based on the information above.

    @243

So was UK’s. Again, FSU’s defense gave up more running yards (and yards per carry) than UK’s against UF, a team they better get used to playing. That’s not a ringing endorsement of his defense.

I wont eat his lunch for it, but it should be noted that his defense didn’t really do that well against UF, turnovers on offense or not.

I have been a Petrino guy since his Dad “leaked out” that he was interested. I don’t know if he really was or not but I sure liked the idea. That does not make be a troll. I love UK and honestly I am not disappointed by this hire. I would have been disappointed with Dykes or some cheap imitation of Petrino. I don’t know a lot about Stoops but getting a guy that has contacts to the Florida pipeline has to be a good thing. I will support Stoops and UK football. However, to the very few people in the fan base that act like the people that supported a Petrino hire are trolls, just shut up. I fight with “UK fans” all the time that say, “well I am a UK basketball fan, but in football I like (insert most recent national champ).” I am a UK football guy. I love bball, but football is where my heart is. Pro Petrino = no troll. I look forward to seeing the Cats take the field under Stoops (lol). I hope they do well next year!!!!! GO CATS!!!!

It’s very easy for some of you…Jason….to look up stats about Stoops’ D and simply look at “yards per carry” against top 25 teams. One of my best friends here graduated from FSU and was a letterman there, and he is very sad about losing a DC that took FSU’s D from 112 in the nation to NUMBER 1! How ’bout them stats! I have had to watch every FSU game this year and I can tell you that the D is much better than Jason would have you believe with his ignorant post. FSU wins against the Gators going away if EJ Manuel doesn’t choke his arse off and turn it over 4 times putting the D in real bad spots!

I’m out, growing depressed reading all of the negative posters on here again. Good hire for UK. Excited to see how he fills out the staff and what’s going to happen with the facilities but good first move. To the negative folks, this was a good hire for UK, no it’s not Jimbo Fisher but guess what, he’s not coming to UK, neither was Belicheck, Gruden, or any of the other ridiculous names I’ve heard tossed around the last few weeks. This was a fairly big name coach in a lot of circles for those that keep up with football closely and I’m surprised we got him to come here to be honest with you, there were bigger and better job offers for him this year but they likely had not offered yet and Mitch probably put together a good package. Still anxious to see who he brings with him and whether or not he can recruit OH and PA as well as FL but I’m happy. He’s the type of coach that can really build a solid foundation if our state senate finally puts some money into the program to help him out.

In almost every post, he contradicts himself and it cracks me up. For example, “UK had a better yards per carry defense than fsu.” lol. Jason, you do realize UK was pasted in this game wich makes your reasoning illogical. UK got blew out, but had a better average. FSU was in the game with a worse average. So, by this logic, is it better to have worse ypc average? Or when he was talking about UK’s offensive line? Jason, you do realize UK has had some great offensive linemen right? Dermonti Dawson, Antonio Hall, Larry Warford, etc. UK has TWO preseason all SEC linemen last year!! People that think they are smart, when they are not, is the worst kind of stupid. At least you did admit when you were wrong about the play calling… Jason, I do not like your posts. I think you are an idiot when it comes to UK sports. A wanna-be, if you will. However, you may be a great person. I just wanted to clear the air. Jason is not an expert. He just thinks he is…

Hosts were saying there are many guys that Stoops and Coley were in very well with that could follow. Those players are as follows:

    Jermaine Grace (LB) 6’1-196lbs
    Tarean Folstow (RB) 5’10-220lbs
    Taj Williams (WR) 6’4-175lbs
    Will Likely (DB) 5’7-172lbs
    Tony Stevens (WR) 6’3-175lbs
    Alex Collins (RB) 5’11-207lbs
    ***Jaynard Bostwick (DT) 6’5-290lbs
    ***Denver Kirkland (OL) 6’6-333lbs

All in top 300, All 4 Star Athletes- and Bostwick and Kirkland were very vey big on Coley.

To all you yelling to upgrade the facilities. We do need to I agree 120% but we have to pay for them some how. Incase you haven’t noticed the state is broke. The boosters have been good to UK but the upgrades we need are a little higher then they could give. It’s not like Mitch can just write a check and it’s that easy. It probably cost the school $20k a year per player plus with title 9 the the NCAA dictates how a lot of the money taken in by the school is spent. Don’t start the tickets will pay for because the ticket revenue is a small drop in the bucket. Untill congress changes the way bonding is issued we can’t do much and there is nothing Mitch can do about that.
Remember the school just laid off teachers and cut the budget to the departments. DR. Capulito just went to the state and begged for money to keep some teachers. I don’t think he’s going to put upgrading the football facilities to high on his list of things to do.

So Barnhart makes the safest choice “based on public perception” which is based simply on the last name.

What is the guy’s head coaching record? 0-0 No bowls

How’d the guy get the job at FSU? His last name.
How was he successful at FSU? The talent pipeline that Florida is known for.

So he’s had a lot given to him. At Kentucky, nothing is given to you.

How will this fish do out of water? He’s got A LOT of work to do.

Let’s hope he knows how to work and can assemble a monster coaching/recruiting staff around him.

This guy will be boom or bust. I don’t think to many will see this hire and think they need to go out and buy tickets. The ones who do where probably going to buy them anyway. I hope this guy wins big and very well could. Looks like he does have the back ground to be a very good head coach. He doesn’t have any HC experience so it’s really a gamble but I hope it works. Giving where our program is right now he may be the best we could do. Just don’t act like this is a sure fire homerun. By no means is this a top flight hire like Cal was to the basketball team. Then again this isn’t Bb its FB so we need to be realistic and know IT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME. Hope he gets a fair shake from the fans and it allowed sometime to put his mark on the program. If the can break even next year we should extend his contract because Joker has tanked this program. The SEC ladder is a whole lot harder to climb the the Big East which has helped strong immensely at UL.

    287) I think that’s real unfair. The guy has had success before he came to FSU. I’m sure his last name has helped him but if you think Fisher hired him strictly on that your crazy. FSU is just like UK in basketball if you don’t win they fire your ass. So I don’t think he would take a chance with his job to give someone a coordinator job because his last name. Maybe a a position coach but not a coordinator. I’m really not excited about this hire as tebow was the go to the JETS, but he IS the coach now let’s at least give him a fair chance. We have to give him time and be open minded. I wanted Patrino but we didn’t get him it’s time to move on.

Dave who’s being naive. Do you think Mitch can spend all the money on football. Do a little research about title 9 look at how Bama, Fla, and other schools support football. Their states help immensely, the bonding is totally different. For Uk to Upgrade they essential have to have cash upfront other states allow for it to be payed back over time. In the SEC the football money is split evenly UK gets as much as BAMA they just have a bonding system that allows for their money to go further. Do you have any idea how much it cost the school for each player yearly. So yes Football in the south makes huge profits but not enough for UK to have a extra 70 million laying around and that is what he would need to upgrade. So dont complain about Mitch we need to complain to our state Goverment. They are the ones who can fix the problem

287 – Agree that he won’t have the same luxuries at UK that he enjoyed at FSU or Miami. That said, when you land one of the Top DC’s in the country that has great connections in Ohio and Florida, that is MUCH better hire than we have had at UK at least on paper.

UK’s last four football head coaching hires were Hal Mumme, Guy Morris, Rich Brooks, and Joker Phillips. None of those guys came in here with the much buzz or expectations from the fabase. Stoops has the “IT” factor and its not because of his last name. His coaching pedigree winning at National Championship as a DB coach at Miami, his 9 years as a DC, and the last 3 at football power FSU have earned him respect in the coaching community.
