The only way Kentucky was going to get a good football coach was if Mitch Barnhart promised major facility upgrades. We’ve heard all week that Barnhart was prepared to do that, and now we have proof. Last week, K-Fund donors received a brochure in the mail advertising future projects and requesting donations. Included in the brochure was a list of upgrades planned for Commonwealth Stadium. K-Fund member Todd Harris tweeted the above picture of the brochure and details for the upgrades. Here are the highlights:
— General cosmetic upgrades to the stadium
— New press box
The press box will move from its current location (between first and second levels) to a new location on top of the second level.
— Creation of a club level
The old press box will be transformed into club level seating, including new suites
— New recruiting room
Rich Brooks famously lobbied for a recruiting room during his tenure at UK. Gone are the days of tables and folding chairs set up alongside the track. UK plans to add a recruiting room to the East End Zone near the Nutter Practice Facility to entertain recruits and their families before and after the game.
— Expanded weight room in Nutter
The weight room in Nutter will expand from 3,000 sq. ft. to 5,000 sq. ft. There will also be improvements to the training and equipment rooms.
Judging by the overwhelming positive reaction from fans today, these upgrades may be well on their way to becoming a reality. The next step is getting a much-needed bonding capacity from the Kentucky State Legislature, which will develop over the next month or so.
