Major football facility upgrades on the way

The only way Kentucky was going to get a good football coach was if Mitch Barnhart promised major facility upgrades. We’ve heard all week that Barnhart was prepared to do that, and now we have proof. Last week, K-Fund donors received a brochure in the mail advertising future projects and requesting donations. Included in the brochure was a list of upgrades planned for Commonwealth Stadium. K-Fund member Todd Harris tweeted the above picture of the brochure and details for the upgrades. Here are the highlights:

General cosmetic upgrades to the stadium

New press box
The press box will move from its current location (between first and second levels) to a new location on top of the second level.

Creation of a club level
The old press box will be transformed into club level seating, including new suites

New recruiting room
Rich Brooks famously lobbied for a recruiting room during his tenure at UK. Gone are the days of tables and folding chairs set up alongside the track. UK plans to add a recruiting room to the East End Zone near the Nutter Practice Facility to entertain recruits and their families before and after the game.

Expanded weight room in Nutter
The weight room in Nutter will expand from 3,000 sq. ft. to 5,000 sq. ft. There will also be improvements to the training and equipment rooms.

Judging by the overwhelming positive reaction from fans today, these upgrades may be well on their way to becoming a reality. The next step is getting a much-needed bonding capacity from the Kentucky State Legislature, which will develop over the next month or so.

so were done with basketball, I thought Cal said the the lockerroom in Rupp would stimulate the excitement for renovating Rupp? I guess not, unless UK doesnt plan on Rupp, meaing the city will take over 100%

As long as the golfers are comfortable in their heated driving range I’m fine with no Rupp upgrades

Uk does not own rupp. The city is responsible for upgrade $$$$$. But with that said, uk has alot of say in what happens to rupp

getting stupid around here, better not short change the bball program for a 500 football team, thats stupid! Im glad we hired stoops hopefully he can make uk fball better but never ever think the fball team is more important than the bball team thats absurd, #1 program in the country in bball not ranked in the top 200 in fball never have been maybe never will be. some peoples excitement here is over taking priorities.

#8 actually football is much more important than basketball. Football is what makes the money for basketball to be able to survive.

In other words, almost nothing will be done to the stadium. We need a $150 million facelift and we get a crappy press box above the 2nd level. Meanwhile, the new kid on the block, Texas A&M announces a $450 million facelift. We get the results on the field that we deserve.

I think Basketball is above all those sports listed on there, and if anything will be announced for that and knowing Cal…It will get a grand reveal to excite the base…those other sports really dont have the momentum so their stuff gets announced in little brochures like that

8.) Dont be silly. We ARE and always will be a basketball school. Basketball will continue to be great. But there is no reason to neglect the football program. Lets have our cake and eat it too.

    8) wake up Footnall is what moves the needle in college sports these days. Hints the conference realignments. Football funds basketball. Glad we are finally deciding to act like an SEC football program.

Football is what makes the money guys sorry to break it to you. It explains conference realignment and it explains how the universities spend their money. UK is lucky and is one of the few schools who bring in positive revenue from basketball but it is still not enough. Especially for those asking for even more of a major upgrade. We are obviously doing just fine with the situation we have in basketball. I don’t see a real need to upgrade any where after we have upgraded to the coal lodge, the new locker room, and the craft center. This is a right step in the right direction. This is the first thing Nick Saban made Alabama take when he arrived.

Do you guys think all the UK clothing and hats etc. is because of football. Every article of clothing pays a royalty to the university. I do get what your saying in football brings in the money, because the SEC splits all revenue evenly across the board. Really UK doesn’t gain anything but ticket sales by trying to get better. As I’ve said before ticket sales are a small drop in the bucket compared to the TV and bowl money. However BB makes huge money for UK it’s just hard to gauge how much because a lot of it is indirectly filtered in.
Also it seems a lot of this is more a wish list then reality. Unless the bonding is changed we will not get the money. Last week our state congress indicated that they where unwilling to change the current system. Nothing Mitch or UK can do about that. Sorry. We may get some of the thinks on this list but not all.

#21 why don’t you just leave BBN. No one wants fans like you. Do you really think if football wasn’t making so much money they would be able to spend all the basketball revenue on basketball? Nope didnt think so.

Everything basketball has is top notch except the arena. The arena is owned by the city and UK has no control over that. The fact that Cal was able to get the locker room renovation with private funds in a public facility is quite an accomplishment. That being said the city and the mayor are working hard to bring the arena and the district to reality. I think you will see work on the arena start in spring of 2014.

So ky bball doesn’t make half the profits of the football team. And the surprising part was that Louisville bball is like two spots behind ky football, and loserville bball is one of the most profitable teams in the country. Reason for ky bball low profits…….. Contributions and arena seating. Really hurts not having those luxury suites

I like the proposed facilities upgrade. But I’d love to see something like a “football village” – a place where players can go and watch movies on large HD TVs, play video games, play pool, eat, listen to music, etc.. There could be several suites with large chairs, TVs, sofas, gaming systems, etc… Something similar to what the b-ball players have at the lodge, except they don’t sleep there. We need something the other schools in the SEC do NOT have – this would be unique; this would set us apart. If I win the lottery tomorrow, I’ll pitch in a hefty donation.

  34. Linda Taylor
    9:51 pm November 27, 2012 Permalink

31 – It’s far more complicated than that. UK doesn’t make as much from basketball for many reasons some of which include the city gets much of the revenue from Rupp, no alcohol sales at Rupp, no luxury suites, etc. UL negotiated a ridiculous deal with the city of Louisville that has the YUM Center on the verge of bankruptcy because UL gets most of the revenue not the city.

FINALLY!!!! This is what we’ve been desperately needing to at least look like we are doing something. This tells me we are majorly serious about big time college football. Commonwealth may eventually look like the Southern Cathedrals of football in this country like the die hard football segment of this fan base has dreamed about. Today has been almost as exciting as the days and nights of beating Tennessee and LSU because these are tangible things we can put our future into. This has got to come through!

Notice it says future projects. Football is still a few years away from even starting anything. The next project in line after softball’s stadium is completed is a new baseball stadium.
