Madison Southern RB Damien Harris Commits To Michigan

harrismich

Madison Southern RB Damien Harris, who held an offer from Kentucky, has committed to Michigan. ESPN ranks Harris as the No. 20 overall prospect in the 2015 class, the No. 3 ranked RB nationally and the No. 1 overall player in the state of Kentucky. According to Steve Jones (@SteveJones_CJ) from the Courier Journal, Madison Southern head coach Jon Clark says that the new Michigan commit is 5-11, 210 and can run a 4.3s.

Besides Kentucky, Harris also held offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, Tennessee, Louisville and several others. Harris made at least a couple of visits to UK, but the Wolverines have been considered to be the heavy favorite all along in his recruitment (h/t Ben Roberts).

You can’t win them all I suppose, but fear not, a buzz is brewing about a game of Yahtzee today.

Three-star OT Brady Taylor from Columbus, OH is expected to announce his commitment today.

Stay tuned.

Harris grew-up a Michigan fan and this was inevitable, but its still a huge loss to loose someone like him out of state. He is a high 4star and could endup a 5star

We didn’t want him anyway. There are a couple of white guys in the mountains who are better.

Hopefully he will at least beat the poop out of the Buckeyes on a regular basis.

People need to relax about this, the beautiful thing about SEC coaches is they will continue to recruit until the LOI is signed. His recruitment isn’t over yet.

#4 does that mean we should relax about kids who committed elsewhere but be nervous about the kids that committed to UK?

Seriously?! With offers from UK and Louisville, he is leaving the state for Michigan! Let him go! Well, may be he will get smart before he does sign a LOI and UK coaches can win him over, if not, his loss.

Bummer. This is an early, early commit. I bet Michigan pressed him to commit early in hopes of wrapping him up before UK and others could get in with him. Can’t blame them. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. Now he has to wait 19 months before he can sign.

Still plenty of time in this recruitment for things to change. Anything could happen at Michigan at that time or UK for that matter.

I don’t get worked up about football recruits who commit beyond the next incoming class.

His commitment to UM doesn’t surprise me, but the timing definitely does. I definitely believe that Michigan pressured him to make the early commit. I still UK will continue to recruit him. If Michigan has a subpar season, if a young back just goes off for them this year or if UK has a better than expected year, Harris may well flip to UK.

He wants to play in a Pro Style Offense. As much as I want it, hes not going to UK

Dont put any stock into any high schoolers verbal to any school until the LOI is signed, sealed and delivered. i.e. Terrance Jones. Especially when his earliest signing day is over a year away. Our 2014 class looks like our best ever but until all those papers are signed and its finalized, it doesnt mean jack

    14. I respectfully disagree. Looks like a logjam at RB at UK (Did I just say that?). I can’t blame him for trying to earn his shot/spot at Mich. I wish we’d have gotten him, but hey, go play for your childhood favorite, my man. Proud of ya.

People you need to still realize we are still the sucky loosing tradition of the sex, stoops hasn’t even coached a game yet. It’ll take time before we start getting high profile recruits on a consistent year end and out basis. Its just like if you lived in Michigan and was a all american in basketball but you grew up a UK fan and you have offers from both them school’s where are you honestly gonna go?

The band wagon will roll with or without him at Michigan ! His light will not shine very bright there! If he had what it takes he would have stayed at Kentucky or somewhere south of here! He will be a lost ball in high weeds there! Wishing him well!

18.fair point. All of us fans are sort of being spoiled on how stoops is recruiting since he’s been here and expect the few bcs caliber players from instate to come to UK. What Kentucky is in basketball is what Michigan is in football. And the kid has always been a Michigan fan

Tough loss for Cats and bizzare timing. Harris is a great kid with an NFL body and speed, but has always favored the wolverines. Recruiting isn’t over yet, but I would be surprised if he flipped for anyone besides Alabama. While he has come around on UK A LOT since Stoops’ hiring, it isn’t an offense (pass 1st) that he seems interested in playing in. I wish nothing but the best for him and am just glad he didn’t go to a rival.

It stinks that such a talented instate kid wants to go somewhere else. But I also don’t see a 5’10 210 pound running back fitting in or even wanting to play in an air raid offense. If he is as good as he is supposed to be he will get many more touches at Michigan. You also can’t blame him or going to his dream school which happens to be one of the biggest footballs schools

  25. Why it's bad for him.

Derrick Henry and Leonard Fourtonette. Nuff said. Kid will be lucky to have a year as the feature back there.

#25 I dont get what you’re saying here. Henry is going to Alabama and Fournette is undecided…How does this affect Harris?

    5:24 pm July 29, 2013 Permalink

@25-seems to work for Bama and USC in the mid-2000’s…plus Fournette has not committed to UM and it’s pronounced Derrick Green. RB’s are looking at Michigan b/c they are running a more classic pro style set much like they did in the past and Alabama/LSU do now with multiple top RB’s in the mix. They like the competition. Plus UM’s O-line haul the last 3 years has been scary good.

Brown’s air raid offence runs the ball over 40% of the time. If one of the running backs has better than an avg season you can bet Stoops & Brown won’t let this slip by without making their pitch.

Whatever, I wish the kid well.

Not surprised……..and not disappointed. Review his tapes. Is he fast? Yes. Is he quick…..shifty and elusive? No. He is a downhill straight line runner. He has never had to face the level of speed and talent a Jo Jo or Milel Horton developed around. He has never shown the love for UK ( for whatever reason) that other Kentucky players have shown. Wish him well in a Micigan offense that hopefully punishes the OSU machine going forward.

You all are ridiculous. If this kid had signed with UK you would do nothing but brag and talk about he will be a future STAR and 1st round pick, etc… But now that he didn’t pick UK he’s overrated and not even that good, and of course now he’s not even as good as the 3 star players we already signed. That’s just ignorant. Harris is clearly a huge talent, so he should get a shot at PT. and like UK basketball recruits, he probably believes he is better than his competition and will play over them

#18 – I’m a UK fan..but Michigan’s basketball tradition isn’t too shabby. I think a basketball scholarship to Michigan wouldn’t be such a bad thing (except it’s colder than a well digger’s you know what up there). Plus, on the football side, Randall Cobb grew up a diehard UT fan (having lived in Alcoa TN all of his life)–we saw how that ended up. Expect the unexpected.
