Louisville Likely to be #1 Tomorrow

This basketball weekend just keeps getting better, guys. With both Duke and Michigan losing their first games of the season this weekend (along with Arizona and Wyoming, who were also undefeated), it’s looking like Rick Pitino and the Cardinals (which suddenly sounds like the name of a bad cover band) are poised to take the number one ranking tomorrow. If that happens, it will be the first time Louisville has been ranked #1 during a regular season game.

Louisville’s lone loss this season came from Duke, although it should be noted that the Cards were playing without Gorgui Dieng. Similarly, Duke’s loss Saturday at the hands of NC State came with Ryan Kelly out with an injury. This past week, Louisville absolutely dismantled South Florida and Seton Hall to start Big East play 2-0.

You know what both teams unfortunately have in common? They beat Kentucky. Ugh.

UL is the best team and in my mind IU is the only team who might have a shot. As much as I hate it, they are legit and Pitino has done a great job of recruiting and coaching up and keeping experienced guys 3 and 4 years. If you add Lamb or Teague to our team this year, think of how good we would be??? I still contend those guys should not have went pro and we have got to start keeping some players more than 1 year.

Also, just a side note, if UL only loses Chane B and Siva and they return Chang, Blackshere, and R Smith, along with a very good recruiting class, they will contend for that #1 ranking pre season next year.

If Pitino answsers the bell this year and wins a title the pressure shifts to Cal to stop pushing these guys out the door after 1 year. If and this is a big IF Pitino wins it, he will then have proven his way of recruiting good players, not top 15 players, but still very good players and keeping and developing them for 3 and 4 years still works.

If UL wins it and we go to NIT or bounced in first round, sorry Cal but pressure is on. That’s the way it is you will always be judged to your rival and right now, this year, Rick has you Cal and it isnt even close and if Rick wins the title I can promise you the UL fanbase will easilty forget how Pitino went 0-4 against Cal and I cant blame them if he wins it. I would forget about the past and focus on the present also.

11- You typed all that crap out. You’re comparing rick’s decade at ul to Cal’s 4th year at UK? dumb. Cal accomplished in his 3rd year what rick can’t do at ul in a decade. UK ain’t the problem. so keep churnin out more horse manure.. let me repeat, ul has had rick ofr almost 10 years and they have not done crap. zilch, nil, bubkus, naught, nothing, zero, nadda. What part of that is difficult to understand?

Hey #12 if your going to bash at least have your facts. Pitino has been at UL for 12 years not 10. I agree in that Cal has accomplished in 3 years what Pitino is yet to accomplish at UL but that’s why I put in my post above “IF” Pitino wins the title this year. If Pitino wins the title, the UL fanbase will gladly forget the past 11 season and I wouldnt blame them and as UK fans we would do the same. Who cares about the past 11 years if you win the title and enter next season top 5, possibly #1.

My point is we suck, they are #1, and the reason we suck is because Cal keeps pushing our players out the door who are boderline players on whether or not they should leave for the draft. Lamb and Teague should not have left. You stick Lamb and Teague on this team and we dont suck we are legit top 5.

You cant win with all freshman and we start 4 freshman and a transfer and we suck. Cal has got to start keeping some of these kids more than one year unlesss they are a sure fire Lottery pick. Thats why we won it last year we returned 3 starters from a Final Four team and mixed them in with a stud recruiting class. That to me is the receipe and that way will prevent ever from having a year like we are having now.

Come on #19 really??? Lamb was drafted in the freaking second round dude!!! Second Round!!! I dont see how on earth Cal did not tell him to return and try to work himself into the first round especially since this upcoming draft is so weak. And where is Lamb now??? He’s in the D league. And for Teague, his decision was about as Dumb as Lambs. He was one pick from slipping to the second round. If he returns he could have easily been a lottery pick this year. Easily!!! Teague and Lamb are the EXACT players I’m talking about. Neither player was projected as a lottery pick and both could have greatly improved their draft stock by coming back. Those are the type of players Cal has got to stop pushing out the door.

Bravo, way not to answer my question, #25. If they did not care where they were drafted and just wanted to get to the NBA to get that paycheck, how do you convince them to stay? Cal is not going to throw his players under the bus, so of course he is going to say he is happy for them — but there is no proof that he shoved them out the door. Especially not Teague, since he had no elite point guard lined up to replace him. But if the kid does not want to stay, you can’t handcuff him to Wildcat Lodge.

Hey #29 as fans we will never know what Cal told Lamb or Teague but in my opinion he was accepting of them going because he has a huge ego and thinks he can replace any player and win at a high level. I love Cal and I wouldnt trade him for anybody but I think this year he will get a little humble pie just as a lot of big Ego Coaches get from time to time. Pitino has had some humble pie recently, Morehead St and a few NIT years, Ol Roy Williams recently went to an NIT so it’s just part of it but in my opinion Cal should have pushed those two to come back. They werent ready and they could have greatly improved their draft stock by returning. Now one is in the D League and Teague plays very little even with Rose out.

Big advantage UCONN. Then they play Cuse at the Chicken House Saturday. That will be 2 I would say pretty big point spread losses. They will be back down to about 12 and everyone will see that they are somewhat of a fraud. A nice top 15 club but in no way a Top 5 club

Here’s the thing about rankings, though (and this applies even when Kentucky is ranked #1). They don’t mean anything. They’re just the collective opinion of a group of people. The AP poll is comprised of sports writers and broadcasters. Do they know the secret formula to determining that team A is better than teams B, C and D? No, of course not. The same can be said for the USA Today coaches poll. Yes, those 31 people coach college basketball for a living and could therefore reasonably be expected to have a more valuable opinion than the random person off the street. But again, it’s just an opinion. Being “ranked” #1 doesn’t automatically make you the best team in the country. In fact, when you’re talking about a sample set as small as 25 teams, it’s entirely conceivable that any of those teams could win a game against any other team on any given night. If the #1 ranked team in an opinion poll truly represents the best team in the country, do they really cease to be the best team in the country if they lose a game to the #2 ranked team? Of course not but you can be fairly certain that if that happens, they won’t be ranked #1 in the next poll. All this is simply to say that I don’t understand why people obsess so much over polls. I get that a high ranking is a source of pride for a fanbase and generates 79.3% of all trash talk on But surely when people take off their fanboy persona, they must realize the actual value of an opinion poll.

    28. By once in a blue moon, they meant a consistently good team all year. Yes you all were in the Final Four last year. However, that was largely due to overachieving and getting hot at the right time, like ours the year before. I would not call last year’s UL team a great team overall. They still lost to Providence by 30. By great, we mean a team that is supposed to be a contender, and you all weren’t. You surprised a lot of people, even your own fanbase’s cynics. Ok bud, try to follow along. Louisville played Duke. Kentucky played Duke. Duke beat both. But more to the point, that is a common opponent. AKA, the same freaking schedule. Add to that what’s commonly referred to as a “Head to head matchup” and we have a pretty easy way to determine the better team. (Spoiler alert…It’s Louisville) Additionally, Louisville spanked Mizzoo by like 20. Let me know when Yewuhkay does that.

    4) Yes, I’m sure its happeneded a few times, but most recently in 2009 (UNC) and 2010 (Duke). Duke may have repeated in 2011 if not for the Kyrie Irving injury, and UNC would have given UK a fight last year if not for injuries to Henson, Strickland, McDonald and Marshall.
