Little Brother gets the Grantland treatment

i

AP PHOTO/TIMOTHY D. EASLEY

This was inevitable, guys. With a Sugar Bowl win, Heisman candidate, and a path to an undefeated season that makes the 1998 Tulane team’s look like the Bataan death march by comparison, the Cards are media darlings right now. Case in point: today’s piece on Grantland, arbiter of all things hip and sports-related.

It’s a good article – if a little hard to stomach given the subject matter – but it speaks to how far those guys have come since the days of Kragthorpe (I know, gag). More importantly though, if nothing else, it also shows just how important the Stoops hire was. Strong had been a near unstoppable force on the recruiting trail his first few years on the job – from the two Browns, to Bridgewater, to Quick – and the fact that Stoops and Co. were able to cut off his momentum as quickly as they did is somehow even more impressive when viewed through the lens of articles like this one.

While the piece doesn’t address the Cats or Stoops by name, the last paragraph shows what I’m talking about:

The irony of Strong’s strategy to make Louisville the nation’s first second choice is that the more it works, the less necessary it becomes. With a BCS bowl victory last season, a Heisman contender this season, and a spot in the ACC next season, Louisville is starting to get a look from top recruits the first time around. Case in point: In January, five-star receiver and Louisville native James Quick chose the Cardinals over Ohio State, becoming the highest-ranked commit in school history. That Louisville was Quick’s first choice shows just how far Charlie Strong has brought the program. That there was any chance Quick might go somewhere else, despite growing up a Cardinal fan with a father who played football at Louisville, shows how far it still has to go.

Louisville football is having a moment. They’re a top 10 program with a great quarterback, a good coach, and a lot of wind at their back. But they’re still Louisville. They still play in the AAC/ACC. And they’re still capable of missing out on the likes of Jason Hatcher to their 2-10 in-state rivals.

That said, like the article implies, a few more blue chip recruits and another big bowl win and that stuff suddenly doesn’t matter anymore. They’d be up with the big boys for good. Which is why the timing of the Stoops hire was so key.

Uk might play in the sec but that doesn’t matter when you can’t even win a conference game. Uk’s never good at football and for those of you that think they are still sooo superior to Louisville then tell me why they haven’t beat Florida in like 25 years.

8 at least Boise State played 2-3 teams in the top 40. UL has nothing inside the 40 on the schedule. Undefeated makes them top 40, no more. Which is why they are Orange Bowl whether they win them all or lose 3 in their conference…it’s just that bad.

UL never has and never will be with the big boys. They’ve been the product of a weak BCS conference for years that has given them the easiest path in the nation to a BCS bowl. Their lone 5 star commit in history was from in-state whose father played for UL so it’s not much of a shocker. If they were to start landing 5 stars from out of state, then you could say their on the big boy level. But we all know that isn’t going to ever happen.

Their recruiting isn’t very good and definitely not good enough to take over the ACC. Meanwhile Kentucky has a top 10 recruiting class and hadn’t played a single game. Just think of what will happen when we actually start winning some games.

Sure, UL is the media darling right now but that will all go away next year when they join the ACC and Bridgewater gets drafted. Then they’ll actually have to earn their spot in the BCS bowl race.

@5 We’re never good, riiiiight lol & UofL is always good, they’ve never had a bad season, ever.
Oh wait, I seem to recall they are 2-4 to the Cats over the last 6 seasons, a team “who is never good” lol So, what does that say about UofL?
Cards fans crack me up, they’ve had 2 good seasons in their programs history due to playing a Kentucky 1A high school football schedule & they brag about it as if they are Alabama. If there was a delusion award UofL would take 1st place by a land slide. Enjoy playing Pikeville High School’s schedule & having Bridgewater for this season, it’s back to where your program belongs after this season, & that’s in the garbage with the rest of your ignorant/disgusting fan base.

The Grantland piece has a title that is summed up in two words: Teddy Bridgewater. Let’s please not act like Charlie Strong has built some sort of juggernaut top to bottom, offense to special teams. What he has done instead is hire a recruiting coordinator who is likely to be sanctioned by the NCAA for passing out impermissible benefits like candy while working in Miami and who was able to hand deliver Teddy B. to Louisville. He may field a fairly competitive team after Teddy leaves but to ever even sniff similar levels of success he’ll have to give Hurtt free reign with donor dollars. Barring that expect Louisville to have a head-on crash with reality in 2014.

The Cards are at probably the highest point in program history this year, they have a true future NFL QB at the helm, and they have a lot of talent at the skill positions. They are also playing one of the weakest schedules in the BCS, so before bowl season it is going to be difficult to judge how good they are. Next year will get very interesting for them – they will finally be playing in a “big boy conference”, although still not as strong as the SEC, they will have to get it done without Teddy leading the way, and I think UK will start to close the gap somewhat both on the field and on the recruiting trail. I don’t know if UK is ever going to have a schedule favorable enough to let them get to a BCS bowl game, but if Stoops keeps pulling in top-10 / top-15 classes, they might just get there. Likewise, UofL is going to see their strength of schedule increase considerably over the next few years, and with continued success Strong is going to continue to have suitors from other schools. I don’t think UK is going to have a chance against UL this year, and next year the game is back at PJCS, but in year three, when Barker has a couple of years’ experience, the big recruits have big game experience, and the game is back in Commonwealth Stadium, I really think the Cats are going to pull even with the Cards.

UL is not now, nor never has been a top ten football “program”! They currently have a top ten team – there’s a difference. If you do not understand the difference, please do not write about football any more because you are promoting our rival with your ignorance!

BBN needs to understand, all of these stories coming out about UL in national media are nothing more than UL PR propaganda machine trying to change peoples/voters minds to distract away from how bad their schedule is & to try pumping Teddy for the Heisman. UL came out & said they were going to promote Teddy nationally for the Heisman. It’s not hard, you pay a PF firm, and boom they get you positive coverage. Hello, why in the world would the NY Times do a cover story on UL, oh & the Heisman just happens to happen to be in NY. Trying to get the North East Media to pay attention to UL & Teddy.

UL has become nothing, but a pathetic propaganda machine that is getting taxpayers to pay for all their building. UL can’t get their fans or alums to give back, so UL currently has 3 special taxing districts in Louisville to pay for their stuff. UK fans are paying for stuff at UL, and probably don’t even know it. UL even trying to kick Kosair Hospital out of a building that UL doesn’t even own because Norton’s is hooking up with UK Children Hospital.

UL as a whole is beyond desperate & pathetic.

Sorry, but the Turds are not a top 10 college football program. They have the advantage of playing in a very weak conference. If they had Kentucky’s schedule, they go 6-6, 7-5 at best. They wouldn’t even be ranked in the top 25. Case closed.
