I think Cal should run Harrow or Mays at the point and call it a day. Goodwin needs to play off the ball. So much of why these guys are out of their element has to do with all of them being completely lost on defense. Last year, one guy or two might get lost, but it’s everybody this year.

I don’t buy the “lack of effort” line. They were lost against the zone. That always looks like a lack of effort. Need Harrow to step up as the true point guard. Otherwise our half court offense against the zone will not improve enough.

    Now now, everybody calm down.

Notre Dame is a physical team, and after UK’s performance against Morehead, I wasn’t completely shocked by their showing tonight. Jack Cooley is one of the best offensive rebounders in the country so far this year, and we’ve been pretty poor on the defensive glass, so his domination was no real surprise either.

Really, defensively we didn’t do terribly. Notre Dame shot lights out on 3s, and several were long or contested. That happens. Don’t worry about that too much.

Rebounding and offense were the real problems tonight. Short of somehow getting Terence Jones back, I don’t know exactly what we do about rebounding, but I assume that Cal will be working on making Noel and Poythress much better on the boards over the next few weeks. That’s this year’s equivalent of the great Harrelson experiment of 2011. That one didn’t really start paying off until the SEC tournament. Be patient, grasshoppers.

On offense, I have to disagree with those who want Harrow or Mays to lead the way. I hope Harrow can be a good backup point guard for us. I think that’s his upside, and no higher. Mays is our 3 point specialist right now, and will never be able to slash and drive the way Calipari needs his point guard to. He’s our 2 guard. It may take Goodwin all season to learn how to be Brandon Knight, and he may never get there. But if this team has a chance to make a run in March, Goodwin will have to lead the way.

So put the knives down. Baylor at home in two days should look better.

This is simply not a good basketball team.

    There’s no solid point guard.
The shooting guard (Goodwin) plays like a freshmen intent on putting up gawdy numbers.
Our big men inside are inexperienced – they will get outsmarted and outplayed by more experienced folks.

This squad could be excellent by their junior year – but in Cal’s system – they won’t have that long to develop.

Got to watch a former wildcat bobby perry couch a middle school game for west jessamine in Anderson county tonight and boy is he a great role model. He showed the kids how to blow up and show true sportsmanship. When he was getting manhandled by Anderson county he managed to throw his pen onto the court and charge at an official and cussing him out in front of middle schoolers and having to be restrained and removed from the gym. He was soon followed by a parent who high fived players as he was escorted out then one of his players was thrown out. I guess he taught them that in practice. He should be let go and shouldn’t act like that show some class bobby!!!

The die was cast when Kyle missed those three straight threes to start the game. That was the difference. And of course it didn’t help that ND made every freaking thing they threw up. Alex was invisible and Archie was highly visible but in a negative way. If you like out of control drives to the basket followed by off balance prayers then you loved Archie tonight. Folks, it will only get better than this so be happy.

Last years team wasn’t as YOUNG as this years team. MILLER, JONES, especially LAMB say hello. Those three guys, especially LAMB, was HUGE. This years team doesn’t have anybody CLOSE to the three previously mentioned players.

This is the first years where the ONE and DONES are going to bite Cal and people can say it doesn’t work. Last year doesn’t qualify because almost half the starting lineup had at least a years experience.

Yea, Mays, Harrow, and Wiltjer have prior experience but their talent isn’t on par.

40 – that’s a legitimate concern. For the first time since he arrived – we are seeing Cal’s system fully implemented. His success the first three years hinged largly on the contributions of experienced players – including last year when Jones and Lamb defied expectations and stayed, and Miller returned for a senior season. Thankfully – there was plenty of room for both Lamb and Jones to stay.

Next season – I’m not sure. They’ve got at least five guys coming in – and just from the first few games – it’s not a given that either Poythress, Noel, Stein or Goodwin are NBA lottery picks.

If they stay – will they be asked to sit the bench. If they stay, will the newcomers be asked to sit the bench. Who will transfer? Who might back out of commitments. What does this do to Cal’s reputation of using UK as an 8-month fast track to the NBA?

This was one of the worst games UK has played in the last 15 years according to ESPN.

“According to ESPN Stats & Info, UK’s 50 points were its fewest-ever under Calipari and the fourth-fewest of any Kentucky game in the past 15 years. The 14-point loss was also the second-most lopsided in the Calipari era. “

  54. Try it
    10:57 pm November 29, 2012 Permalink

Try Mays at the point. Goodwin needs to play off the ball. Mays may not be a slasher and is a good shooter, but his more in control game is needed. I think Mays is the unselfish player on this team. Knight and Mays have similarities. Harrow backs up Mays. The arguement is where are the points going to come from. Archie is to worried about himself to get guys involved. I think Mays will make AP better as well

Seems like a lot of callers on the post game show agree with me. Call me crazy, but I’d move
Julius Mayes to point. He can direct the freshmen on the court, calm
them down, and set them up and get them involved. And of
course he can shoot the rock. Hes not really fast but hes solid other than that. Think it’s worth trying, because Ryan is not playing well enough right now, Archie is too out of control and won’t pass the ball, and Polson isn’t fast enough or big enough to keep up with a lot of our opponents.

I’m also getting tired of the “youth excuse.” Good basketball players find ways to play good basketball. Kentucky didn’t (save for Julius). I don’t care that Goodwin doesn’t know how to play the point. It was one thing if he had trouble finding the right time to pass, and the right time to drive, but ALL NIGHT he just charged into 2-3 guys then chucked the ball at the shot-clock. It was pathetic. Poythress showed NO effort in the second half. Poythress looks like a hybrid of Disapearius and Crybaby Jones. Another Jekyll and Hyde type player. And Wiltjer looked like he had never played basketball in his life.

I’m not trying to be all gloom and doom, but I’m not one to excuse away piss-poor basketball. Kentucky didn’t even show up for this game. And I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before under Cal. And quite honestly, it’s a little alarming.

Do you all not realize, this team is young. They’re not very good right now & they’re all selfish like Terrence Jones. Also this game was to prove a point & learn a lesson, Harrow was punished for his distraction to the team. Whatever, rhythm or bond this team had if any was broken when Harrow got ill and became homesick. Now that he’s back, & I proved a point he will be our point guard. Archie will slide back over to the two as well as Polson & Hood having front row seats to every game. Hope you boys enjoyed your minutes, you should think Harrow that selfish MFer.

    66. No, but everyone is just shrugging it off like in January we’re suddenly going to be a top 5 team. Kentucky has had glaring problems since Maryland, and I’m not seeing much improvement after the first month. What part of, “one of the worst losses for UK in the past 15 years” doesn’t rustle you? And it’s actually 2 losses now. And had Maryland not had such a bad shooting night of historic proportions, it could be 3. We’re a month into the season and this team has given me no reason to believe that they are a legitimate threat.

Unless I’m mistaken -they’re all at least 18 unless they’re some academic whiz kids and skipped a few grades.

In most states – kids can play high school sports up to the age of 19 – and sometimes they do just that because in middle school they get held back so they’ll be older and more mature than the competition.

I don’t think any of UK’s current freshmen are extraordinarily young.

This is an average team. And its OK!

This team beats the team with Meeks and Patterson and I enjoyed watching those guys play. Stop hoping for a championship every year. I really enjoy this site and the comments but take it easy on these guys. Yes the effort stunk, but can’t we still stay behind these guys and pull go them the same.
Remember, too much pressure and BS Cal could leave. Anyone would take him. THEN WHAT?!?
Poythress could be great. He has to believe in himself. We r killing that.
Noel is no AD! Really? No one in the history of the game has been.
WCS could stick around a couple more years and be very dominant. Would u want to stay and listen to this crap?
And lastly, Archie could be another great one. PERIOD. Not his fault he’s playing out of position. No doubt he leaves next year.

Good to read some comments from some people that have a little sense. My opinion, this team just had a horrible game last night. They really can’t play worse than that. Meanwhile ND seemed to hit big shots every time they were faced with the opportunity. So if we play our worst game and the home team hits big shots, we lose. It happened. It really should’ve been worse than 14 but that tells you (or should tell you) where Cal cant take this thing. It’s going to take some time. It will be difficult without an outstanding PG but maybe one will develop. Support your team and your coach. You are entitled to a championship quality team every single season.
