It is very late as I have just returned from my trip to Ashland for the Barnstorming Tour and have to do the law thing tomorrow. But tomorrow night is the event at Scott High School (7 pm) which of course means that Ickey Woods (who is playing in the event) must grace the blog for the second time this week. Ramel, Joe and Woo have all agreed to do the Ickey Shuffle tomorrow night in honor of his attendance, so that in and of itself may be worth the price of admission. The guys played tonight in Ashland and it was a barnburner. The Seniors from Marshall University, plus some former Marshall players, took Joe, Ramel, Woo, Bobby and Brandon Stockton down to the wire. The game was actually very well played, Ramel had 41, Joe 32 and Bobby 22. It even got a little chippy at the end with some trash-talking and the like. Great game though and we thank the Ashland people for coming out.
Couple of quick thoughts….
— I am kind of glad I was out of commission when the Cats received the commitment from the 8th grader. I havent seen him play and know what everyone else does about him…that he is supposedly good. I dont blame the staff for getting the commitment….others are doing it and you have to play the game. But I do think fans should take this with a big grain of salt. With a kid that young, you never know what will happen. Think about this….the class of guys that includes Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins will start school next season and STILL would never take the court with this guy at any point. So it is hard for me to get too interested. Nevertheless, it was an interesting story and gave us all something to chuckle at tonight. When I told Woo that UK got a commitment from an 8th grader, he said, “to do what?” Indeed….
— Not hearing good things on Derrick Jasper. I was told that an announcement could be made as soon as Friday or early next week. No one tells me he is staying….everyone could be wrong, but it doesnt look promising.
— Sad news about Chris Lofton today. Fought through testicular cancer after last season, had radiation and still played this year. A courageous kid and one that deserves a lot of applause. Kudos as well to Tennessee for keeping the story quiet and respecting the kid’s privacy.
Thanks to all of you who wrote about the Joe and Ramel story. The family involved contacted me today, thanking me for the post and saying how touched they were at the outpouring of support by the UK fanbase on this and other sites. Many came up to Joe and Ramel tonight to talk about it and it seems to have touched a nerve with the UK fans. It certainly has with me.
More throughout the day….
