With all the hoopla that basketball season inspires around the Bluegrass, let’s not forget that, for at least another week, it’s football season.
While this past Saturday was Joker’s last game in Commonwealth, this Saturday marks the last time he’ll be on the sidelines as head coach. The seniors carrying him off the field after Samford was pretty neat, but you know what Joker would probably like even more? Leaving as the only Kentucky coach in modern history with a winning record against Tennessee.
Five days from now, college football will see the “Coachless Bowl,” as UK and UT square off in a game that has absolutely zero point. Nobody’s going to a bowl, no coach is fighting for his job, and no decades-long streak is at stake. It’s the diet, caffeine-free soda of the football world. But if Joker’s last two seasons have taught us anything, it’s that we still enjoy kicking the Vols when they’re down (see: Roark, Matt). There’s really no way to know what to expect, as Tennessee’s interim coach will be facing a sudden, unfamiliar change, and Joker will be facing no consequences for the results. I’m expecting some weird and wacky stuff.
So as the hoops world (including a high school game in Scott County) keeps us going, remember that we still have a football game to look forward to on Saturday. And call me crazy, but yes, I’m still looking forward to it. We might not see something like this again:
But we can at least know that the rest of the SEC hates Tennessee almost as much as we do.
