Emmanuel Mudiay’s Saturday Late Night News and Notes

mudiay

Emmanuel Mudiay tweeted yesterday that he was going to shock the world, and he certainly did. For months, the top rated point guard seemed like an absolute lock to be the next in line of great Kentucky floor generals, but the draws of proximity to home and great coaching were enough to lure him to Southern Methodist. Despite the underwhelming tradition of SMU Basketball, Larry Brown is a Hall of Fame coach where it was only a matter of time until he started to attract big time recruits.

There is no hiding that the UK staff and BBN wanted Mudiay to come to Lexington, but even the best recruiter in college basketball cannot win every battle. While its a tough loss for Kentucky, Emmanuel Mudiay is a great young man who will do big things on and off the court. As always, wish him the best and show him that Kentucky will always support him.

Now your news:

– Obviously, the big story of the night is Emmanuel Mudiay selecting SMU as his college choice at halftime of the Elite 24 game. If you want full details, you can check out Matt’s post below this one where he gives info on where UK will go from here. There is no doubt it was a tough one to swallow for UK fans, but recruiting is a strange, confusing world. Good luck to Emmanuel in what will certainly be a bright future.

– One interesting note on Mudiay’s selection of SMU is that his brother, a junior college player, also received an offer to play for the Mustangs. Some might call it a well done recruiting move by SMU while others may consider it a form of dirty recruiting. It would be interesting to here what the masses would say if Calipari pulled a similar move.

– In basketball news for the current squad, the rumors can stop as James Young and the Harrison Twins have all arrived in Lexington safe and sound. Everyone can be relieved that the ineligible talk can end.

– On the football front, the team continues to prepare for the showdown with Western Kentucky in Nashville. Nick Roush gives the full report here. The main news from practice was that CB Cody Quinn was still absent with an injury, but the rest of the roster appears to be ready for battle. The coaching staff was very pleased with the effort the last few days, and the players like A.J Legree are ready to enact revenge after last year.

– Stoops also gave an update on the status of S Ashley Lowery. The investigation into Lowery’s crash and any ensuing criminal charges are still ongoing, and Stoops announced he will not place any punishment on Lowery until the process plays itself out.

Get ready for a football filled week as KSR and the rest of BBN prepares for the kickoff of college football. It will be a wild time in Nashville for the official opening of the Stoops Era.

#2, That is just downright moronic. Cal has landed triple the 5 stars of any other coach over his tenure at UK. he missed out on Mudiay, but you can’t win them all.

I wonder if Polson would consider redshirting? I do not see any real minutes this year, but a season to practice and continue to develop, could be at least a help @ pg for next season. He could prob complete any master’s degree in that amount of time.

Emmanuel Mudiay decided to play with his brother and play close to home.. Maybe he and his brother can help the SMU Mustangs turn things around. I wish him well….. But the fact is, SMU has not made the NCAA tournament since 1993.

You can’t call Larry Brown a “journeyman” and then say he’s one of the greatest of all time. A journeyman isn’t someone who has moved around a bunch, despite the name. It’s someone who is skilled or experienced, but not a master. Dictionary, FTW!

Coach Larry Brown has worked for a amazing 19 different employers according to Wikipedia. How do you build loyalty with a employee who keeps resigning for another job? I give Coach Larry Brown credit for winning the NCAA championship in 1988. Later Coach Larry Brown won the NBA crown in 2004…But that is all…..

Coach Cal is the new Dynasty master in the making working hard to catch up with UCLA. The bar standard is set higher at the University of Kentucky..

UK and their fans can downplay this all they want, this was a huge blow for 2014. They have no PG’s for next year. Forget about Jones, its either KU or Duke for that kid. Probably Duke because KU looks like they are landing Alexander,Turner, and Oubre.

All you Larry Brown bashers please note: the man gave John Calipari a coaching job at Kansas when Cal was ONE YEAR out of college. Brown is the only man ever to coach a team to both an NCAA championship and an NBA championship, and the only guy ever to take EIGHT different teams to the NBA playoffs. Those facts would tell a smart fan something: we are benefitting right now from Larry Brown’s genius and work ethic that he instilled in Cal as a young college assistant. He is undoubtedly a huge part of the reason Cal is what he is. I hate saying anything positive about a North Carolina Tarhole, but Brown is among the very best ever to blow the whistle, and I do not begrudge him his one silly teenager.

Now, we just need to get the twins and young Clearwd. That is the last step. Can’t believe some fans actually equate being on campus and enrolled to being eligible. They had to enroll, otherwise they would have zero chance.

Why can’t everybody just enjoy the upcoming season instead of worrying about 2014. Even if we dominate this year and suck next, I’ll take it. Some players just want to stay home, play with a brother, or just like another school better. Last I checked we still get the number 1class pretty much every year.

18 has it… complain about this for a day, then move on. He didn’t want to be a Cat. That’s on him, he’s gotta live with that decision. I know we’ll be a better team than SMU next year, I trust Cal to stock that team with some studs to surround Karl. Emmanuel who?

Same thing happened with the Memphis kid. Cal won’t be forced into taking family members on the team. As far as this kid’s decision, where were the parents? I’m all for family, but go to a college that will market your skills, then give your brother the extra 2 million you make for it.

  40. Twinning

To all those still wanting to talk about eligibility: it’s very common for late graduates to be cleared late. The NCAA is focusing on football eligibility and will work on basketball next. They haven’t been officially academically cleared but now they are here and enrolled in school, and will be cleared soon. Do you all think Wiggins has been academically cleared? He hasn’t. Its normal. Sorry trolls you’re not getting out of your Dec a** kicking.

Guarantee: Cal will never have another season like last year, this I promise. I wanted Mudiay badly but Cal has a much bigger plan. Who is to say that Exum isn’t coming or Andrew might want to stick it out one more year with Aaron before they are on different teams forever or just maybe we grab Tyus with Okafor? All of those are great options! I feel that Ulis committed last week. I do believe be is the backup option, however. Cal will have 2 guys at every position the rest of his UK career. Enjoy this season, ya’ll!

Thank goodness Mudiay made the decision early and didn’t drag it out to next May like Wiggins did. That could have possibly left UK with no legitimate point guard option. So what if we have to drop down a notch or two and go with another 5-star option!!

Don’t see giving his brother a scholarship as dirty recruiting at all, really it’s quite a smart move. Scholarships aren’t as precious as they are at UK where instead of his brother u could have a top notch recruit, in order to land Mudiay it was probably necessary to do so and now with him makes the pitch to other recruits much better as they have an elite pg on their roster. Hate to lose the guy but brown made a smart move and isn’t break any rules or anything like that so not dirty at all IMO

I think Turner may now go to SMU as well (its in his backyard too) and they very well could be an NCAA team and we would likely play them, knowing how the tourney committee likes the match-ups with story-lines. Also, don’t rule out SMU getting increased TV coverage that year. The networks don’t mind taking a chance that a star-studded player (or players) will be watched. I do believe UCLA was on TV mor this year than for a number of years.
