Kyrie Irving vs Matt Carlino

Kyrie Irving and his New Jersey Roadrunners team just finished up playing the Indiana Elite team that features Matt Carlino, Spencer Turner, Marshall Plumlee and Cody Zeller. The Runners got off to a rough start while Carlino dished it out and Turner lit it up from three point range for the Elite.  Carlino is a Indiana commit and Turner is drawing interest from the Hoosiers as well so during this stint, the largest crowd for the tournament so far was erupting with Hoosier pride.

Irving showed how quick his hands were both by swiping away the ball on defense and making nifty passes on offense.  His jumpshot had great form and he got good rotation on the ball but everything was coming up a little short from the outside, probably due to the fact that he was a little tired from a game earlier in which most spectators said he completely went off (I was watching Zollo and Davis at the time). When his team needed him down the stretch though, Irving provided the boost.  With Carlino on defense, Irving drove into the lane where he was either fouled or finished. He also knocked down the open three.  In the end, the Runners survived a very good Indiana Elite squad.

After the game Irving was asked about his recent unofficial visit to Indiana and told reporters that he was introduced to a few teachers and the academic counselor.  Academics is a strong selling point for Irving, who would like to major in journalism (coincidentally IU has one of the top journalism schools in the nation).  He gushed about how much he like Assembly Hall and how beautiful the campus was.  To say that Kyrie Irving enjoyed his time in Bloomington might be an understatement.  Its going to be hard for any other coach to keep this prospect away from IU and Tom Crean.

When asked about UK, Irving noted that Calipari had contacted him and that the situation was still the same as it was when Calipari was at Memphis.  He did add that UK has offered him a scholarship.  Irving plans on narrowing his list down to six at some point and then making his final decision in the fall.  He will take an unofficial visit to Duke soon, a school that is pretty decent academically, so don’t count them out of the Irving race yet.  All for now, more later as the tournament progresses from pool play into tournament play which should provide more than a few good matchups.
