Kyle Wiltjer Will Transfer to Gonzaga

wiltjer 3 goggles

After weeks of patiently waiting, it is my duty to report that Kyle Wiltjer will be transferring to Gonzaga in the fall. Kyle’s father confirmed to Jeff Borzello earlier today that Kyle will be making the move back to the West Coast. Wiltjer made his decision last week, moving out of the Wildcat Coal Lodge last night. Apparently the hot girlfriend factor wasn’t enough.

It was a nice run Kyle; Good Luck in Spokane.

Good luck to Kyle and hope the best for him. With that being said I don’t know how much PT he would have got this year. I heard on the show today that he was getting abused by players from Cuba. From some reason he just never wanted to improve his D or maybe he just couldn’t. There might be a game or two that we miss him this year if that. I think Matt said it best that he wasn’t worried about this year if he leaves but maybe next year.

I really don’t understand why he would transfer,he was given the option to red shirt here and work on his body for the following year. Instead he decides to do the exact same thing at another program? I wish him the best of luck but I wonder what he is so afraid of. This just reminds me of Alex Legion and Stacey Poole. They both thought they were better off somewhere else and now they are irrelevant and failed at another program.

19 the big hardware is coming back to Lexington, wiljter or no wiljter. You act like we have no shooters at all now. Aaron Harrison is a pretty good shooter and James young is a very.reliable shooter as well. Even poythress shot over 35% from 3 last year plus Julius randle us capable of hitting some open shots from beyond arc. Wiljter may have been a dead eye shooter but the kid gave up more points in defense than he contributed on offense. Were still very stacked so quit worrying so much, its our title to loose this year

Not a smart move at all, he will have to sit out a year and then be a senior. This year he could have red shirted or played against a beast of a team in practice and been great his senior year at UK. Going to a place where you wont be noticed is not a smart at all. Good luck playing in China or the D league after your college career is over

I love Cal and am not a hater one bit, but in his system it seems as though there is no room for role players. Hood doesn’t count

@44 I loved Kyle, honestly. But those role players you mentioned could play defense really well – especially Liggins. Kyle could shoot the ball, but if he was slumping then he didn’t have much to contribute; definitely didn’t play much in the way of defense.

Lets be real, when Kyle got to UK, a lot of people had him pegged as a 2-and-done-player. And he was…When people talk about about losing “experience”, what they’re really talking about is “leadership”…no offense to Kyle, but he wasn’t providing much leadership. Cal will find someone else…

  89. rj

last year really exposed his weakenesses, he showed on this trip to china that he could do good against lesser competition, but last year when teams actually defended him his shot wouldn’t fall and he wilted, and him being so bad on the defensive end we just couldn’t keep him on the floor. so good luck to you kyle, I hope the zags are a better fit to your skill set.

  90. TrinityPills

Wiltjer shoots the ball well when he doesn’t have to do anything else (defend, create his own shot, run the offense through him on the blocks, etc.). His problem is that he has to work harder thatn someone who is more athletic than him to overcome his lack of athletecism and he either didn’t put in the work to get his body ready to compete at the high D1 level, or he just simply can’t. Too many good players coming in that are athletic enough to defend and play on the offensive end. He wouldn’t have gotten playing time this season. Easy to say we will miss his shooting (althought he was 41% from the field and only %36.7 from 3). Those are hardly sharpshooting numbers. I don’t blame him for leaving and I hope he does well at Gonzaga. However, if he plays a major role for them, I hope they play UK in the second or third round of the tourney, because he will get abused.

We give a lot of grief to Card trollers but from reading many of these mean spirited comments we have a good number of bad fans ourselves

This is a good move for Kyle’s COLLEGE career. He can go to Gonzaga and be the man. With a lot less pressure. Either way, he’s not going to play in the NBA. Best wishes.

I’ll be willing to be Kyle has a hot EX-GIRLFRIEND very soon. Being a Gonzaga basketball players just doesn’t have the same kinda pull that being a UK player does. Good luck with that girl to guy ratio. In all seriousness, I wish him the best.

This was definitely the best decision for Wiltjer and while I hate to see him go becuase he would have helped us a lot the next two seasons, I am happy he is making the decision that is best for him.

I wish Kyle the best of luck..Having said that ppl keep calling him a knock down shooter, I saw him get alot of open shots last year and not once did i see a knock down shooter plus he couldnt rebound or play defense..I hope that works out better for him but i dont see him getting tougher or faster..

and like always ill take a shot at defending the so-called haters.. Last season was rough for cats fans and one moment that still sticks out in my head is Kyles Body Language with 5 mins left in Robert Morriss game. Ive never seen a wildcat so clearly give up with a game still in reach(it was disgraceful) I also think maybe this Gonzaga recruitment that started on the canadian team also might not sit well..I wish him well but i have very few memories of Kyle at all ,he was kindof absent when he was there.. Oh I forgot this talk that Duke would run plays for him lol maybe after the plays they run for the 4 or 5 players clearly better then him..I do hope his girl dumps him fast cant have a good kentucky girl dating a canadian zag..

I agree #112. Run away Kyle, you can’t play here, to much talent. He was without a doubt the weakest player to come here in a long time. It was shameful watching other teams run plays AT him. Good luck Gonzaga, you will need it.

He was going to Gonzaga before last season was even finished.

A lot of Wiltjer leaving had to do with his Dad being upset with way his little boy was blamed for many of the team’s problems last season. Plus at the end of last season Calipari informed Wiltjer that it be in his best interest to redshirt this upcoming season. This request did not sit well with Wiltjer’s parents. So Daddy Wiltjer told Cal “if my son sits out a year, he will be doing it at another school”.
Cal has known for over two weeks Wiltjer was indeed transferring to Gonzaga.

Good luck Kyle at Gonzaga. We will never forget your crucial three-point shooting. Thanks for your time with the UK team and remember that 99% of BBN fans appreciated your contributions and are wishing you nothing but the best as you start your next chapter in life.

Only 9 players in the school’s history have gone to the NBA from Gonzaga. And you folks are saying he left because he didn’t want a challenge!

Not hating on Kyle here, I wish him the best, but name a UK transfer that has gone on to a relevant hoops career. Waiting….

    Dumb decision!

LeRon Ellis, Michael Bradley, Roderick Rhodes all played in the NBA, and I believe were drafted in the first round.

While I hate to see him go, I think Gonzaga is a great choice. Gonzaga was 32-3 last year. I always root for them in the NCAA tournament. Good luck to Kyle!

I am very sad that Kyle is not going to be with us next season. He needs to work on his defense but outside of that he is very skilled player. I think this decision is more so based on playing time next season than anything. I wish him nothing but the best and thank you for bringing #8 back to Lexington. Your three point shot will be sorely missed.

I said “relevant” career in the NBA. If I remember correctly Bradley’s dad said his son was the next Larry Bird
