Kyle Wiltjer scores 22 in Team Canada’s blowout win over the United Arab Emirates

gf9a4hzdy9vh89em

Welcome to day 15 of Kyle Wiltjer Watch. Kyle’s still in Russia playing for the Canadian Developmental Team, who crushed the United Arab Emirates earlier today, 137-43. Wiltjer had 22 points in the win, which tied for a team high with Brady Heslip.

Afterwards, he told North Pole Hoops that his team won by playing tough defense and sharing the ball: “The first thing that we focus on is our defence and that really leads to easy baskets. We’re an unselfish team. We have very talented players so we can all share the ball.”

(Sounds like a Calipari player to me…)

Kyle’s still trying to decide whether or not he’ll transfer to Gonzaga or stay at Kentucky next season. The Canadians will be in Russia until the FISU Summer Games end on July 17th. A source tells KSR we should expect to hear his decision early next week.

Meanwhile, just be happy he’s still wearing UK gear:

I hope Wiltjer comes back, all of you that say he can’t do this or can’t do that and that he should transfer are stupid…sorry… Contrary to popular belief UK is a University and not a farm league for the NBA, some guys develop faster than others and it’s ok to have upperclassmen I can assure you. Worst comes to worst he just turns out ok and graduates a role player with a degree and high GPA which would be just fine

I hope Wiltjer returns as you do, but to pretend he isn’t a somewhat limited player is just as silly as saying he should transfer. He clearly has some deficiencies as a player, and some of them aren’t ever really going to go away (unathletic and slow), while others can. I believe he brings more to the table than others do, and like I said, hope he stays but lets not pretend he’s the greatest player ever or anything

With Wiltjer and Heslip on the team, I bet team Canada is hitting a lot of 3’s every game.

    3. I agree. I’ve always thought he would develop into a Scott Padgett type player for us and that his key contributions would come at the end of his four year career. If he wants any hope of playing at the next level, he should consider redshirting and continue to develop at UK against NBA caliber athletes.

I’m a UK alumni, was born and brought up in the UAE before coming to Lexington, and the UAE basketball team can beaten by an Div II school.

No doubt Kyle can play many years of professional basketball but obviously he wants an NBA career and the conflict is can he convince the NBA GMs that is possible by staying at UK. Here’s hoping that happens (and Kyle figures out how to guard a door).

Also a good source tells me today’s podcast is MIA.

UNC situation is getting worse. Prisbell at USA Today dug up 4 rentals by Fats or his lady that got 9 parking fines at UNC, on the campus. That includes 2 of the cars getting fines on the same day, which would suggest at least 2 people. Fats claims he doesn’t have a connection to UNC (so not him on campus with the car, right?). So possibly 2 different players, at least, could be proven. Also, there were tickets/rentals during the basketball season. Prisbell and his partner at USA Today found Fats and his lady rented for a total of $15,000 in about 4 months. That sounds like booster or agent money had to be involved.

People are digging to try to find if there’s a connection between Fats and tickets gotten by the football players (so as to force the academic scandal back into the discussion).

I hope that is a good sign by Kyle still sporting the UK gear. I also think it is in his best interest to stay at UK and red shirt. His father brought up some good points about how other teams would use Kyle. I bitched all year that Cal wasn’t using him the right way to maximize his offensive prowess. Any other team that you watch that has a great shooter runs constant picks and double picks and rubs and any other thing you can think of to get them open looks. Anyone with a brain knows that he is not going to beat someone off the dribble or get him own shots out side. Another way to use him would be to post him up and let him make plays. The only thing wrong with that last year was that the other players had no basketball I.Q.’s and when the ball went in to him they all just stood still. When the double team came, they weren’t smart enough to cut to the basket or make themselves available to Kyle. I would love for him to come back and work his butt off to be the best player he can become. The fact is, if Cal cannot get you into the NBA, you ain’t getting there.

If you aren’t 100% sure you want to be here then I don’t want you here. Of course this is just my opinion but I’m done with him and hope he leaves. Funny how people slam players like Wiggins and Shabazz for not coming here but Wiltjer is doing far, far worse and he gets nothing but praise and thank you’s on here. It helps to be white when dealing with BBN.

@28 he was only used that way last season…his freshman year he was perfect. Next years team will have the players to allow the kind of plays you are talking about. Guards that can do work and bigs that must be guarded.

And compeletely disagree with the guy above that said kyle may not be able to show his skills for nba GM’s if he styas at Uk….he only gets drafted if he stays at uk. Averaging 10PPG or so this season and 13-15ppg as a senior he will have a shot b/c he plays at uk. If he chooses to go to gonzaga he better go nuts. 10-12 ppg is not gonna get it done there

    @29
he is already on the team…no common themes with the high school players you named. Its a huge decision for him as im sure he would like to play more….however, from and nba perspective he will get better at practice at uk more than most other teams

29 – You are an idiot for making a blanket statement like that about BBN. The fact of the matter is most Kentucky fans could give a sh#t about players that don’t come here, including the two that you mentioned. And Wiltjer has gotten plenty of criticism from plenty of fans. It’s not about color — give it a rest.

You have to look at the situation. Last year he was the only offensive player on the floor besides Archie. Harrow couldn’t score, Poythress wouldn’t score, and offense wasn’t Noel’s strong point either. All defenses keyed on Wiltjer when he was in the game, but that was last year. This year you’ll have an elite point guard, a couple of decent shooting guards, one of the best power forwards at the college level in Randle, Cauley-Stein coming on offensively with Dakari. Put Wiltjer on the court with the team this year and I’m guessing that the worst defender on the floor for the opposing teams will be on him. That’s exactly what we want and that’s exactly what will make Wiltjer’s game shine. He’ll be a better player with other offensive guys who can shoot surrounding him.

The breakdown on his decision is simple. Does he want another ring or does he not? He’ll play more and he’ll score more on the West Coast. Does he want the jewelry? That’s the question. He’s not going to get a ring out there.
