KY Speaker of the House says Stoops will have to “win a football game first” before getting funding

One of the main reasons Mark Stoops accepted the Kentucky job was a promise from Mitch Barnhart for major facility upgrades. Mitch met with boosters and sent out a letter to K-Fund donors outlining a series of upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium and the Nutter Field House. But, in order to make all of that happen, the program needs funding from the Legislature. The university is currently working on a bonding request for the next Kentucky legislative session.

cn|2 just posted a troubling video of Kentucky Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo answering the question of whether or not Mark Stoops would get the new facilities he was promised. His answer? “We better wait and see if he can win a football game first.” **evil laugh**

Uh oh.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. Stumbo lives in Lexington and LOVES UK, he will approve any funding they put on the table

Stumbo may still be but at one time was a season ticket holder and had a tailgating pass at the corner of Cooper and University Dr by the VA parking structure. I have personally tailgated with him and his family. My point is he cares about the program but likely cant openly show his support considering his position. Im personally optimistic about future support.

It’s a shame that UK has to get bonding thru the state. Since they have a board of regents and the capability of paying off this debt without state help then they should not need their blessing. The state cannot even balance their own budget and they actually believe they have a better idea on how to spend the university’s funds? The board of regents are made up of SUCCESSFUL business leaders and they have to brow down to a bunch of legislators who can’t even figure out how balance a budget? REALLY?????

With all the trouble we had getting a better score board at commonwealth how does everyone think we can get the things on mitches wish list. Some how most will be whinning about Mitch not spending the money. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it agian. It’s not as easy as just writing a blank check and Mitch can get what he wants. My guess is boosters will come threw with a recruiting room and UK will allow Stoops to a pay top dollar for his 2 coordinators. That will be about it.

there is monumental evidence which proves winning college football programs not only pay for themselves but for the entire AD. and arguably then some after. the idea that improvements to SEC football facilities have a higher probability of not paying for themselves is absurd. these improvements should been done 5, 10, 20 years ago.
im embarrassed for the university and state that our football program isnt making nearly enough money as it should simply because the bonding cant go through.

UK did not seek “funding” in past years, they sought bonding authority. Essentially, UK is required to ask the state to spend its OWN money! Seriously! We are one of very few states that makes its billion dollar economic engines come to Frankfort to ask for permission to spend its own money. And the legislature often says no! All Kentuckians should be disgusted by this.
