KSR Honors Big Blue Veteran and Active Duty Personnel

Let’s take a quick break from pounding the F5 key for signing day updates, and take a moment to identify and honor the members of the Big Blue Nation that have served (or are currently serving) in the American Armed Forces.

Jon Scott’s site has quite the collection of former UK Basketball players who have served in the military. This list includes Alex Groza, Ralph Beard, C. M. Newton, Cliff Hagan and Carlos Toomer (the last UK player to have served in the military). Jon also has a list of former basketball players who were killed in action, and I highly recommend you take a moment and read their amazing obituaries.

Unfortunately, UK doesn’t have an official record of any other student-athletes who have also served or are serving in the military. But they would like to start one. If you are a former student-athlete who served (or a family member of a former student-athlete who served), please contact UKAA and let them know. Former football players in particular should email Tony Neely directly.

There are plenty of veterans currently on UK’s campus. If you see one, give them a hug. If you know a vet that attends UK, make sure they are involved in the UK Military Veterans of America group on campus.

We also want to salute you, readers of our site who are veterans or active-duty military personnel. We also want to salute family members of our readers. Please sound off in the comments. Remember, do not post specific locations or details of active military units, as it may jeopardize their safety.

From all of us at Kentucky Sports Radio, thanks to all who have served, or are currently serving, in the Armed Forces. You guys rock!

I may be fake, but my passion for UK sports is real. Probably put all my best work at and, so go there when I start coasting here.
