Know Your Enemy: Morehead State University

Mosley, a KSR founding father, once had a feature entitled “Know Your Enemy” in order for UK fans to be fully informed about their next opponent. While Mosley has moved on to bigger and better things, our enemies continue to be part of our life.  I want to keep us prepared on a game-by-game basis.

“Tis best to weigh the enemy more mighty than he seems.” -Bill Shakespeare

Now that Sean Woods’ #VibeGate is over, everyone can start focusing on the game. Well, that and trying to reconnect with the old flame from high school that’s in town for Thanksgiving. I hear the group is getting together at Applebee’s for the game. After all, it IS the Neighborhood Grill.  Put on your beer 3 goggles and see if there’s still a spark there. Be sure and talk a lot about your fantasy football team. She’s dying to hear about it.

Tonight, Morehead State comes into Rupp Arena sporting a 3-1 record and a 2011 NCAA tournament win over Louisville.  If you don’t know much about Morehead State, don’t worry. I don’t either. I know they play in the Ohio Valley Conference and their mascot is the Eagle. I want to know more, though. Let’s learn together so you can impress everyone at Applebee’s with your knowledge of the opposition. I’m glad you’re here, because it’s time to Know Your Enemy: Morehead State Eagles.

Location:

Morehead State University is located in Morehead, KY. Morehead is located in Rowan County in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Morehead, KY is known as the HARDWOOD capital of the world and it’s main water source is the Licking River. *Resisting the urge to make a joke that would get me fired.*

There are over 11,000 students enrolled in the university. Most of them will be going pro in something other than sports.

Notable alumni:

Chuck Woolery- Chuck Woolery has had 6 children and four wives. What can you say? The guy is a family man. But that’s not why you know him. He hosted “Wheel of Fortune” for a period of time, but was most notably the host of “Love Connection”, a show that brought more people together than eHarmony.com.

Phillip Martin Simms- The former Morehead State quarterback and Super Bowl MVP is now a color commentator for the NFL on CBS.  He was born in Springfield, KY before moving to Louisville and playing at Southern High School.  His son played football for our two biggest enemies, although his time at Louisville was short lived.

Kenneth Faried- A member of the Morehead State team who knocked Louisville out of the 2011 NCAA tournament, “The Manimal” was drafted 22nd overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2011. Six days ago, he had 20 rebounds against the Miami Heat.  I covered the 2011 OVC Tournament (I’m not sure why) and watching him from court side was amazing. I’ve never seen another player who changed the game as much as he did without scoring a lot of points. His grown man-o-meter measurement is off the charts.

Josh Teater- KSR’s favorite PGA Tour golfer attended Morehead State, where he played golf for the Eagles for four years. After years on the mini tours, Josh broke through in Q School and made it onto the Nationwide Tour where he played one year, won the Utah Championship, and advanced to the PGA Tour. Josh finished 101st on the money list in 2012, good enough to keep his playing privileges for the 2013 season. He is a huge UK fan and recently got engaged. Congrats to Josh & Ashley, best of luck in 2013.

Cheerleading Scouting Report:

Morehead State has 67 cheerleaders on it’s roster. There is no picture because THERE IS NO WAY TO GET 67 CHEERLEADERS IN A PICTURE!

I don’t know what necessitates having 67 cheerleaders, but nothing happening at Morehead State does.

Basketball History:

I don’t know much about Morehead State’s basketball program historically, but I do know they won the OVC tournament in 2011 and went on to beat Louisville in the first round of the NCAA tournament. I think that’s all you need to know. We’re done here.

Coach:

By now, you’re well aware that Sean Woods is the head coach of Morehead State. Sean, of course, is an “Unforgettable” and made one of the most exciting basketball plays of my childhood. (Warning: I recommend you stop watching at the 2:00 mark.)

This will not be Woods’ first trip to Rupp Arena as an opposing coach. He led Mississippi Valley State into Rupp when he was the head man there.  I’m not going to rehash his comments from earlier this week because at this point that story physically exhausts me. However, I did enjoy all the beat writers tweeting about it and Jerry Tipton’s tweets being 5-10 minutes behind everyone else’s.

I expect those fans that make it to their seats by tip off will give Sean a warm welcome despite the comments this week. Let’s hope so. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

Players:

Milton Chavis- I couldn’t find a good picture of Milton Chavis so this picture of Milton from Office Space will have to do. Chavis is a 6’6” senior from Raleigh, NC. He played at Word of God with some guy named John Wall. (Never heard of him). He is averaging 17.3 ppg. I hope he doesn’t scorch Rupp Arena like Milton did Initech.

Devon Atkinson- Atkinson is from Farmville, NC. If that place is what the Facebook game my aunt sends me requests for is named after then I hate it more than socks with sandals.  Like his coach, he is a solid point guard. Atkinson is a senior PG who is averaging 7.8 points and 5 assists per game.  Like a teenage girl, he has no issues with taking a selfie in a car.

Last Meeting:

November 12th, 2009 is the last time these two teams met on the hardwood. The game was played at Rupp Arena. As you may remember, John Wall was serving a suspension during this game and Eric Bledsoe started at point guard. He scored 24 points, had 4 assists, and made a shot he threw over his head while falling down. All in all, a pretty standard Eric Bledsoe evening.

Summary:

Before you head out to meet up with the old gang to embellish the same high school stories you’ve been telling for years,
settle in for some basketball action.  Morehead State should be a better opponent than Lafayette and if they’ve watched the tape, they know they better duck if they see Archie Goodwin coming with a head of steam.

I’d like to wish all of our readers a Happy Thanksgiving and give you some advice. Wear pants with an elastic waistband to your thanksgiving gathering tomorrow. It’s not stylish, but you won’t hate yourself as much in the moment.  Jeans can get tight. Sweatpants can’t. You’re welcome. And good luck rekindling the fire you never had with your old girlfriend/boyfriend.

Go Cats. Go Thanksgiving.

Should have mentioned former coach Dick Fick, who was well known for his entertaining antics on the sideline. May he rest in peace.

Devon Atkinson, in addition to being a fine point guard, is an even better person. I was lucky enough to get to know him and his family while he was playing at a local junior college and I was the shot clock guy and sometime scoreboard operator for their games. And I would go to the gym to get up a few shots and he would be in there working out and we would chat. Be warned, he can flat out fly; he gets it up the court fast. It’s great to see him at Morehead. A lot of the players from the community college go on to 4 year schools to play ball but only a few make it to D-1. Devon did.

I believe Anthony Davis and MKG both played for UK last year. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong but didn’t they both change the game with their defense and rebounding while not scoring a lot of points. See the National Championship game if you somehow forgot.
