University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Kids, this is not how you do PR

For the past few weeks, a mild fire has raged in the city of Louisville over the decision made by UK’s 2011 recruits to play in the Jordan Brand Classic intead of the Derby City Festival Classic.  The man with the lighter is Dan Owens, the recruiting chair for the event, who feels like they’re givin a giant middle finger to the game and not showing any loyalty to their soon-to-be-home state.  It now appears that Owens has kicked it up to a William Sherman-like level of flaming destruction.  In an email sent to UK officials, Rick Bozich and Jerry Tipton, Owens took shots at Calipari for not convincing the players to attend the event, made some “Worldwide Wes” insinuations and then said the absolute dumbest thing he possibly could have said.

Dan Owens, your thoughts on Michael Jordan?

“He plays golf, gambles and butchers the King’s English.”

Oh man.

While Owen’s passion for the event is admirable and there was an apology email that was later sent, the continued bickering is bordering on insanity and is only serving to make the event look petty and small-time.  Did he expect Anthony Davis to say, “You know, he’s right.  Michael Jordan does play golf.  I’m going to Louisville.”?  Does he think that taking shots at the speaking abilities of the greatest player in the history of the game are going to score him points?  More importantly, is he thinking at all?  I’m assuming not.

Mr. Owens, please just let it go.  Nothing is going to change and you just look foolish, which is a shame because most people seem to agree that you’re a great guy.  Maybe you should just channel that passion for the event and quest for UK patrons into publicizing the three possible UK players – Braeden Anderson, Trevor Lacey and DeAndre Daniels – who will be in the game.  That might actually work.  You should know that Anderson talks Canadian, though.

This dude needs to stop complaining. The roster seems like it’s better than it usually is anyway. Our badass recruits would rather play in the McD’s and Jordan games and I don’t blame one them bit.

Why throw Calipari under the bus and bring up WWWes. He is burning a huge bridge to the ground. I don’t think Calipari gives a crap which game they go too but he is more likely to keep kids away from the KDF now that they are taking shots at him. Instead of laying some groundwrok for the future years / games he is basically tell UK to F-off. Makes you wonder how some people keep their jobs.

I heard from some folks that played in Jordan and Derby City that Derby City treats you like a king. Apparently Jordan doesn’t offer the southern hospitality that we offer so the name Jordan is great, but we offer a better experience.

having been in the vicinity of rex chapman during his high school career, i can say with absolute certainty that had another prominent all star game (such as the jordan classic) been around in 1986, he would have chosen to play in it rather than the derby classic (in addition to the mcdonalds game)…what would you have done? any player of this caliber would obviously pick the mcdonalds game plus the jordan game

I thought I heard Matt interview this guy a week or two ago. Might have been another guy though because as I recall this guy didn’t speak the finest Kings English. A basketball fan might see that quote and wonder if his ridiculous reference to the Kings English is somehow a reference to the guy most commonly called King James today.

Many of you very well know it takes a lot of money, time, and effort to get a game like KDF has to offer off the ground. And I’m sure Mr. Owens has had all three into it extremely deep. But for him to cut on Cal, ther University he very well may have sh!t in his own mess kit. What he should’ve done was just be pissed and walked away. Instead he contacted Bo-Zilch, and Tipton who are very anti UK anyway to vent his frustrations. Yep, I think the guy had the “green apple quick steps” when he sh!t in his.

This guy needs to step down if he really cares about the future of this game and its relevance to the overall landscape of recruiting in the state of Kentucky. Until they somehow get this on television its hardly a big deal as far as exposure for these players anyway. I’m all for having the game for whatever reason. But this guy has obviously shown what a dumba$$ he is. His accusations toward Cal and his claims about the way Michael Jordan speaks are totally laughable. Its almost as if the guy wants to destroy himself. Obviously NIKE, Hanes, McDonalds and others like the way MJ speaks and they love the way his commercials have brought them millions. This guy may be a local KY guy who I would normally side with against a former NC player, but not this time. You know Bledsoe wasn’t committed yr before last and with the coaching change, Hood was talking Orton into staying but there was no problem with neither Wall or Cousins. Why not focus on the undecided guys who have UK listed?

Dan hates Cal and has referred to him in writing as “Coach Crap”. He hates Cal’s recruiting the top talent because he thinks they will all leave after one season(and won’t play in his game) and thinks he should be playing more than six. He doesn’t think Cal can develop talent and insinuates a recruiting violation with Gilchrist. Yet somehow he thinks he can wage a publicity battle over Cal’s head and somehow get the recruits to switch to his game and force Cal’s loyalty. It’s surprising he can get anybody.

Owens is a big supporter of UK, big-time booster, and offered early warnings against Gillispie. He is a true asset to BBN, but I wish he wouldn’t expect payback from the school, forcing players into games they don’t want to play. As Calipari has said repeatedly, “This program is about the players.”
