(If he’s not yelling “REBOUND!” … I will do it for him…)
If I had told you that Kentucky would win this basketball game tonight and Jarrod Polson would play a significant role, right from the start, would you have believed me? I certainly wouldn’t have. Former walk-on Jarrod Polson was the unlikely hero of the game tonight, giving Kentucky great minutes throughout the game when Ryan Harrow struggled with point guard duties for the Cats. Polson finished with 10 points off the bench. Polson had a hand in some of the biggest plays throughout the game. With a little over 3 minutes left in the game, Polson came up with a steal on a missed rebound, and then finished a circus-like lay-up to put the Cats up by 4. Kyle Wiltjer led the team with 19 points. The game wasn’t pretty, as first games of the season for such young teams rarely are. And I think I speak for every Kentucky fan when I say, “REBOUND!” Kentucky was out-rebounded all game long, and it wasn’t even close. Despite being plagued by foul trouble early, Kentucky put up an impressive 49 points in the first half to carry a comfortable lead into the break. Maryland went on a 15-0 run early in the second half to tie the game. From that point on, it was back and forth between the two teams.
Archie Goodwin made a freshman mistake, committing a foul to put Maryland on the line with 8.9 seconds to play. Maryland brought the score within 2. Who other than Jarrod Polson was fouled with 7.7 seconds left to give Kentucky the cushion needed in the end. Polson converted on both clutch free throws to send Kentucky home with a 72-69 win.
