Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Kentucky squeaks out a 72-69 win on the shoulders of…Jarrod Polson?

(If he’s not yelling “REBOUND!” … I will do it for him…)

If I had told you that Kentucky would win this basketball game tonight and Jarrod Polson would play a significant role, right from the start, would you have believed me? I certainly wouldn’t have. Former walk-on Jarrod Polson was the unlikely hero of the game tonight, giving Kentucky great minutes throughout the game when Ryan Harrow struggled with point guard duties for the Cats. Polson finished with 10 points off the bench. Polson had a hand in some of the biggest plays throughout the game. With a little over 3 minutes left in the game, Polson came up with a steal on a missed rebound, and then finished a circus-like lay-up to put the Cats up by 4. Kyle Wiltjer led the team with 19 points. The game wasn’t pretty, as first games of the season for such young teams rarely are. And I think I speak for every Kentucky fan when I say, “REBOUND!” Kentucky was out-rebounded all game long, and it wasn’t even close. Despite being plagued by foul trouble early, Kentucky put up an impressive 49 points in the first half to carry a comfortable lead into the break. Maryland went on a 15-0 run early in the second half to tie the game. From that point on, it was back and forth between the two teams.

Archie Goodwin made a freshman mistake, committing a foul to put Maryland on the line with 8.9 seconds to play. Maryland brought the score within 2. Who other than Jarrod Polson was fouled with 7.7 seconds left to give Kentucky the cushion needed in the end. Polson converted on both clutch free throws to send Kentucky home with a 72-69 win.

Jay-P > Jay-Z

We will be back with plenty more on the game later… Stay tuned.

What a roller coaster! Hope we learned not to get complacent after this one. Since we got the W, I’ll say this game was a perfect learning experience. We will need to learn how to scrap for rebounds before Tuesday.

I’m not going to harp on the rebounding woes like most. I don’t want to seek out the negative in our first game of the season- which we WON! “In Cal We Trust” Don’t sweat it guys he’ll tune our boys up on the glass. Talent will always prevail, we’re just fighting against the inexperience. I’m extremely proud of Jarrod Polson EARNING his playing time and finally shining he’s deserved it. The way all the guys were crashing the boards and hitting the deck the effort was there. First half was blowing my mind with offensive production. Flashes of greatness in the first game. Victory. And it’s only going to get better. BRING ON #D9NASTY GO CATS C-A-T-S CATS CATS CATS!!

I knew Polson had this in him, and that’s why it got under my skin everytime people yelled “shoooot” like he was in the same class as that goober brian long. This will be a very good team by the end of the year…..a very good time, I tell you. I was impressed. A lot of freshmen mistakes, but they were playing in a hostile environment, with a dominant Maryland crowd, with a lot of pressure to be as good as last year’s team, and they somehow still won. None of the freshmen played very well, but they will get better….and better…..look out. When these guys figure it out, they are going to be good. This is already a much better team than the one that lost 9 games with Josh Harrelson and Brandon Knight and went to the Final Four. Seriously, all in all, I was very, very impressed. A lot of pure talent with a very, very young team. They will be better by Tuesday and Duke. I guarantee it. And look out for Maryland. They are going to make some noise in the ACC.

Polson should not be a surprise to anyone. His time as a Cat has shone him to be a good player who just does nothing to hurt the team and plays steady and turnover free ball. He was a scorer in High school and knows how to make baskets when given the chance. I really feel better with him on the floor than Harrow who really hurt us the second half. Best thing about Jarod is he knows his limits and plays within himself. No surprise to me at all.

While the rebounding was atrocious, Kentucky looked dominant in the first half. If we can shore up those rebound and defensive breakdowns, watch out. They looked awesome in the first half. It will all eventually come together. In a year where college basketball is universally down, this years squad has a chance as good as anyone else’s to cut down the nets in Atlanta.

    1) Our bigs were TOO aggressive in going for blocked shots; we’d have two bigs trying to block the shot while a Maryland player moved into rebounding position. They gave up TONS of offensive rebounds to MD for that reason alone.

    2) BLOCK OUT FOUL SHOOTERS! Geez, c’mon.

    3) “Jarrod Polson” was trending on Twitter nationwide. Gotta love it.

In short, they looked like….well, a bunch of freshmen out there. It’s reassuring to see that Polson can come in give that much quality time. He may wind up being that “steady upperclassman hand” we need on the court.

  196. Carlos
    6:28 am November 10, 2012 Permalink

Actually, I thought the team did great. 49 first half points. Everyone seemed afraid to make contact to block out…which makes the win all the more incredible!! Maryland was impressive. They were a very physical team with bulky guards, and the 7’1 Lin is a star. He had an incredible array of post moves and ran the floor like a guard. Forget what they were last year, we beat a very good team tonight.

We were horrendous on the backboard, and a lot of it was because our perimeter guys weren’t putting a body on someone. Their bigs did a great job forcing our guys under the basket on the rebounds, taking away their angle, so the outside guys could sneak in. Not to dog on Noel, but he doesn’t have much of anything on the offensive end, and he really has horrible hands. He can’t rebound because of his butter hands. I just don’t see the whole #1 recruit thing yet, but it is early. Cauley Stein should start until he figures it out.

And those of you dogging on Mayes. Points aren’t everything. He defended, and was a vocal leader. He was solid.

Goodwin is a star. He will fix his control problems and become special. Poythress had trouble because they had so much stocky speed. He couldn’t overpower them, and he couldn’t blow by them. He’s going to have to adjust to the size and speed in college. Seriously, our guys looked way better than I thought we’d look. I feel pretty confident about where this team is going. Bring on Duke!!
