Kentucky rallies, beats Tennessee 65-62

AP Photos

It wasn’t pretty, and the Cats were in foul trouble the entire time, but good teams find a way to win games when they aren’t playing their best. The Wildcats trailed by six at halftime, and were down as much as eight with about nine minutes to go, but eventually pulled out the 65-62 victory. Anthony Davis led all scorers with 18 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was right behind him with 17 points. The Wildcats move to 3-0 in conference play and 17-1 overall with two of those win coming on the road.

On, On, U of K.

I thought again the last 10 minutes we played pretty good. Even Wiltjer came in and hit a big 3. It’s gonna take awhile for them to adjust to this ugly style of basketball that the SEC is going to throw at them. It will be for us especially come NCAA tournament time.

Kidd Gilchrist and A. Davis were too much for the Big Orange. I have to say, UT will make some noise with Stokes. He is a beast and gave us a lot of trouble. But down the stretch, it was Gilchrist who put the team on his back again.

Ugly but great win for BBN. F Tennessee. Sure wish the refs would learn to be consistent. Vargas needs to get a little better and we will be ok when Davis is in foul trouble. Officials will strive to keep the team foul numbers even, just a fact of life. That hurts us against teams like UL of UT who play a bunch of guys, rough it up and are used to being in foul trouble, while we are not used to playing with foul trouble.

This team will struggle in the tournament if Teague doesn’t figure out how to play under control. He continues to make horrible decisions. This is Cal’s worst offense at either UK or Memphis and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is his worst point guard as well.

Teague is essentially not an offensive threat. He can’t shoot and is out of control on his drives half the time. He is playing selfish and rolls his eyes every time Cal talks to him. Knight and Wall had their struggles, but they could at least make the defense respect them. I know this, if you can take care of the ball and play defense you are as good as Teague is right now.

  52. Catnuts
    2:36 pm January 14, 2012 Permalink

Knew it wouldn’t be easy but we almost blew it with under a minute to go up by 8.I think they thought the game was over and relaxed a little on defense. I don’t understand why Davis is drawn away from the basket when someones man gets by them. He was stepping 2 or 3 steps up the court to come to the man and all they had to do is drop it down to his man. I know he is supposed to have help but most of the time it happened so quick it was hard for a man to get back on Davis man. Davis is so long, he doesn’t need to take those steps towards the driver, he can still block it if the guy happens to pull up for a short jumper. Same thing with Shargari Alleyne played for Tubby. Tubbly was so dumb that he played man with Alleyne in the game and the other team would just take their big out to the top of the circle and Alleyne would follow him and take him completely out of the game. With the right coach Davis would have been chasing Alleyens records right now.

We clearly have the most talent of any team in the nation. I don’t think it is Coach Cal’s fault that we struggle against inferior teams. He tries to get the message through to the players. Where does the problem lie though? This Tennessee team had swagger and obviously weren’t intimidated by the number 2 ranked team in the nation. On a lighter note, anybody else notice T Jones “we’ve got balls” jesture going into a timeout?

    21) That’s crazy, Stokes will be VERY good for UT. He’s a solid, big body and will be a major part of their offense the remainder of the season. He showed flashes of what he will be for them. Good for Tennessee. We need more teams in the SEC to be winners. The same argument I get when I say UL plays in a weak BCS league in football – Kentucky plays in a weak SEC conference. Valid point. The more teams we have in the top 25, the better and Stokes will get Tennessee there. However, the pure skill talent and athleticism of the Big Blue will prevail every time. We beat UT on their court with questionable (read: bad) calls by the referees and we came away with the win. We didn’t cover, I didn’t expect to, but just leaving the garbage man convention arena with a win and hearing the chants of “Go Big Blue” in the crowd makes me happy. Get up BBN and drink one with me!

Al B. Sure, you’re exactly right..there were numerous phantom fouls on the Cats today, including the Wiltjer foul, Jones 5th foul, and several charges called on the Cats.

It seems to me it’s as simple as this: the refs prefer to call a charge over a block, maybe just because the charge signal is a cooler signal.
Regardless, if I were a basketball coach, I would instruct my team to flop EVERY TIME the offensive player touches you, and keep doing it until the refs start to get some of those calls right.

This place has become a bunch of Debbie Downers. Everyone upset we didn’t cover the spread. “F” Vegas, the spread, and you, a win is a win. I don’t care of we win by 1 or by 30. There were horrible calls against the Cats today, from offensive charge calls when the defender was still moving so much he only had one foot on the floor to the wrap around call the other way foul against Jones late in the game. To go on the road and beat the home team + refs is a good day in my book. There are things we need to work on, yes, and we’ll do that as the season progresses. We have one loss on the season, a lucky last second shot from a decent team, and unless we blow people out by 30 people get all over these kids. I’m loving this team and am developing new man-crushes on some of these guys. I’m being forced to break off my relationships with players of the past, Wall, Boogie, Jorts, Knight, to name a few. Cal is bringing them in EVERY year. Let’s allow Teague to develop and we’ll take it from there. I remember Wall came in and was a virtual turn-over machine at first. Teague will not be a John Wall, but he’s going to be a top PG who is going to lead this team. Be happy for the win and the resilience this team shows, no quit in them.

In the end, yes it’s a win, but they need to get much better to win the title and that’s what I want. I don’t care if we lose some regular season games, like Cal said, you can’t lose the title in January. What I do care about is this team getting better and improving in the areas that need it and right now, they have problems at the PG position and need to improve. I want them to, but Teague’s attitude has been bothering me lately and if he doesn’t buy in, we could be in trouble in March when a win is truly a win.

I don’t buy half the talent argument, Stokes will be a lottery pick and several other UT players are talented enough to play at the next level. UT stood toe to toe with Miss. State in Starkeville without Stokes. UT losses have come against very good teams on the road or at neutral sites. I get the feeling that some fans believe we are under achieving despite a 17-1 record and with wins over most of our hated rivals. To those fans, get a life. If you are expecting KY BB to go 40-0 every year and to win every game by 50 points I would say that maybe your expectations are just a tad bit too high.

Schwump, nice to see you taking a positive attitude for a change. I’ve been praying for you. Apparently it worked. I knew you had it in you! We hardcore fans need to get another hobby. Oh Hell, no we don’t. Somebody is calling for me…who? Oh, Jim Beam, gotta take this call.

KnoxvilleIrish, Actually… I didn’t complain about the officiating. I said, “you have unbiased, non-UK affiliated commentators for ESPN talking about how bad the referees were”. I would say “you have reinforced the common perception that UT fans can’t read”, but that would be a cheap shot that I won’t stoop to.

    89) Does Teague need to improve for our chances in March? Yes, definitely. But come on, it’s mid January, still LOTS of time to improve. Don’t want to peak too soon. He’ll either buy in as you put it or Cal will sit him on the bench. We’re just at the mid-way point in the season and a lot of these guys are just now starting to play against competitive teams. We’ll be fine, Teague will improve, and we’ll make the run to hang #8. I just thinks it’s a bit too early to call a kid a failure and bench him. I don’t want Cal to look like Pitino and beat them down. Work with them and help them improve, that’s what Cal is all about. Us bitching about it on Internet message boards doesn’t get the job done. Don’t let Teague’s attitude bother you. Do as I do – have a drink (preferably bourbon), chill, relax and enjoy the win. You’ll live a longer and happier life, trust me. It’s a game, a game played by kids. Can’t let a win or a loss make or ruin your entire week. Big Blue fans are fanatics, but I’ve learned it’s much better for my well being to let a loss slide and shrug it off and to celebrate a victory, whether it’s by a single point or a blowout. Can’t win ’em all and can’t win ’em all by more than a couple of dozen, so enjoy the ones you get and quickly look past the ones you don’t. We didn’t play bad today, we didn’t play great. We played good, Tennessee played good also, just so happens we played a little bit better and that’s all that I can ask for. If there is no improvement by February, then I’ll agree with your observation, until then, have fun with it – I bet the players on this team are.

WE only hit 2 3 pointers the whole game and found a way to win. I will not have any gripes over that esp on the road. Teague still has ways to go but he is getting better. Road games are always tough but we came out with a victory. The question is why Darius didn’t get it together. We are gonna need him to score more.

I don’t think Teague played THAT bad. He made a few mistakes, but so did Darius Miller (a senior, a former SEC tourney MVP). So did Lamb. So did MKG, even. I feel as if I’m unfairly gaining a rep as a big Teague guy. He is not by a long shot one of my favorites on this year’s team, or is he in my list of top PG’s that have played for the Cats, but I do get frustrated when he gets unfairly criticized for every little mistake. To be fair, PG in basketball is like QB in football… constantly under the microscope, so I do understand how he can get so much criticism, but he didn’t play that badly and he has improved since the start of the season.

I guess I don’t understand why we didn’t try to dictate tempo more. True, they beat the press early, but why do we get in these grinder games rather than trying to get.a team like UT to run with us? R

103- fair point. We had a total of 7 assists for the entire team, according to the stats I have seen. Not good. Our leader in assists today had 2. Only UK fans will find a way to nitpick and complain about a win… but 7 assists. Whew!

LMFAO…#70 the operative word you used is “ALMOST”…Which actually tickles me to no end. Be you a UT or UL fan…..face it you suck. AND you suck it real good. Between UT and Looserville I’d hate to guess how if you all played 10 times a year that both of you would SUCK beyond belief, the freaking score would be 2 to 0…… Hell if you two played, if it wasn’t for gravity the ball wouldn’t even come close to making a basket…..GOOD GRIEF you both SUCK! You talk about sucking, both UT and UL should be the spoke-school for Dyson vaccum cleaners. The closest thing to you all sucking is a BLack hole IN SPACE…..gUESS WHAT? Yeah you SUCK and so does your artificial Turf eating cows you call cheerleaders….Yeah they suck also. Knoxville is the capital of SUCK! If there is a supreme being and he had to make a place for all human waste to go to…..YEP it would be Tenneessee…..Why you may ask? Because you SUCK…….Sincerely….Me!….
    P.S. You suck!
