Kentucky picked to finish last in the SEC East

The SEC media members have spoken and they all agree Kentucky is going to struggle this upcoming season. The Cats are picked to finish last in the SEC East behind Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, and then Vanderbilt.

But on the bright side, Larry Warford was named second team All-SEC by the SEC media. He was the only player from Kentucky to make one of the three All-SEC teams.

Nowhere to go but up!

Oh, God. The humiliation! We must avoid being the first team in history to finish seventh in the SEC East.

All UK Football fans have a right to be cynical at this point. But I’ll still go to games, cheer, and hope they surprise us.

The problem w/ supporting Joker and this team is that it just helps perpetuate failure. Not mediocrity – complete and utter failure. The only way the University will do anything to get a top flight coach and competitive facilities is if the fans boycott to send a message. A hard message for the kids that signed up.. but its the only way.

Matt Jones has got it totally wrong as well. He rails on that the program can NEVER be good. He is totally wrong – and Spurrier proved it. With the right coach and facilities, you can take a bottom feader program and at least get them competitive in the league.

No one expects UK to actually win the SEC. What we expect is a team that is competitive in the league the school chooses to compete in. The program has been competitive in the past under coaches that brought some excitement (Curci and Mumme). It has failed under coaches that are boring, grind it out types (Joker, Curry).

Unless the administration shows that it cares enough to put a competitive product on the field, it does not deserve the fans support. And without the fans’ support, the football cash cow will crumble. And THAT will get their attention… trust me.

There’s a shocker. I guess the expectations are so low we should be happy with whatever wins Joker Phillips conjures up. Well this is one cat fan that refuses to fall for the SEC media sleight of hand. I understand that Joker Phillips has a lot of fans in BBN, although I have difficulty understanding why. The man seems to be a genuinely good human being, however, that matters very little when it comes to winning football games. UK football was grossly unprepared for competition last season. The team was unfit to play the teams they played and that was clear from game one against WKU. The team also failed to improve over the course of the season, as evidenced by the humilation that was the Vandy debacle. There was a bright spot with the Tennessee win as the last game of the season. That win alone allows Joker’s return for 2012. I could get into the sadness of that statement all day, but suffice it to say that we have Joker another year and let’s see how much wore it can get.

This is jokers 3rd year….ppl are so rediculous. If they do have a good season these ppl should never be allowed to be fans again. We have not been good by any means but we went to a bowl and won 5 last year…I’ve seen UK have 3 win seasons

    5) Obviously you haven’t been listening to Matt on the radio show…where he’s clarified himself 100 times. He’s not saying that UK can’t ever be good, just that they won’t ever win the SEC East. If you disagree with that, that’s fine. I don’t think I would ever use the word “never”…But that is actually what he thinks. He doesn’t believe it to be negative, it’s just that he has a better understanding than 99% of fans what all the football team has stacked up against them. Because of the lack of high ranking college players in the state of Ky, funding problems through the senate (that no other program has to deal with), lack of tradition (why we couldn’t keep a successful coach if we got one), and 100 other reasons…he has formed this opinion.

He’s not trying to insult the team, he’s trying to lower everyone’s expectations because we all want to kick our coach out the door.

Joker’s play-calling, substitution patterns, and lack of aggression kills me, but I don’t know that we have a better option. Seems like we should give him a few more years to get the kinks out. If he is able to succeed, we will have our best chance at pushing the football program forward. Sadly, because of inpatient fans, we will most likely loose this guy at the end of the year.

I really don’t understand the animosity towards our football program this year. We’ve been to a bowl game the last 5 out of 6 years. We’ve had one bad season, and that was last year. We should have won the BBVA compass bowl, but Joker made a very tough decision in suspending Mike Hartline for his off the field actions. Joker could have easily have played Hartline and won that bowl game. Which I believe, would automatically turn all of your opinions of him around. But Joker didn’t jeopardize the integrity of our football program, like most other coaches in the NCAA do. 3 years isn’t quite enough time to implement a system with the recruits you want to bring in. If you take a look at the history of coaches for UK, you will see even the worse stayed a minimum of four years. It’s a tough situation, but if you truly love UK, then one bad season shouldn’t have you scowling about the coaching staff, nor the administration.

Joker was the recruiting coordinator for Brooks, so these are all his guys. Last year was a complete disaster, except for the TN win. Truth is, we were underprepared every week, came out flat every game, got manhandled routinely and the offense was the worst I have ever seen…from any team. There is just no excitement whatsoever.

Joker was offensive coach before he was made coach in wating. We’ve been running his system for at least 5 years, that’s why he was named coach in waiting to avoid what we’re going through now.He made a terrible decision in not allowing Mossakowski to compete for the QB job handing it to Newton and in the process divided the team. We all saw how bad Newton was and all we heard was how much he had improved before the season started. As far as the previous season we lost games we shouldn’t have and lost to a team without a head coach from the big east in a bowl game. I’ve had all I can take.

Maybe some of them, but Joker was recruiting to Brooks system. Not his own. No excitement? There is a hell of a lot of excitement from what I hear around. Every year is a new year. We will know where this team stands after week 3.

  18. why
    11:47 am July 19, 2012 Permalink

Why do we (the fans) accept this level of garbage from our coach and AD? Joker was on the staff during the “good” years and we’ve gone down hill since he took the job. If anything we should have take a step forward. Now, in year 3, we are picked to finish 13 or 14th. WHY?

We need to put pressure on the Board of Trustees to get a new AD with a vision for football. I get it that UK makes money if we win or lose – but why should we continue to pay for tickets to see Joker stink it up.

And let’s be honest, continued trips to the Music City Bowl isn’t setting the world on fire. Until we make an honest effort into improving the football program we are never going to get over 50% in conference, NEVER.

We’ve had one bad year. Joker’s first year was amazing. A rough finish after an injury to Locke and the suspension of Hartline. But we went 3-0 before we got beat 31-17 AT Florida. Lost a few more games we should have won, lost to the to-be-National Champions Auburn on a last second touchdown. Turn around and beat South Carolina. How can you say all Joker has done is garbage?

All of Joker’s woes as head coach and the struggling offense are directly attributed to Morgan Newton. He knows it too. No way Morgan Newton takes a snap, unless they put him in for some kind of wildcat formation.

    13. I’ve been listening carefully to Matt as well as his conversations w/ the guy in the legislature who everyone is blaiming for the lack of funding for facilities and Mitch Barnhart. Matt’s point is that KY football will never be competitive in the SEC since they can’t recruit players w/ the same talent level. This is what I disagree with. I think they CAN recruit good players – because Spurrier did it at USC – where they also had a tradition of losing and crappy facilities. Now Vandy and UL have passed us by like we are standing still.

Its Barnharts job to sell his football program to the administration and its the administrations job to figure out how to get funding. It starts w/Mitch, and all we have from him so far are excuses about funding. If he can’t figure out how to get the administration behind his program, he needs to be replaced.

The program has deteriorated dramatically since Joker took over. He’s been responsible for recruiting or the head coach for the past 7 or 8 years – so don’t tell me he ‘deserves more time’. 8 years is enough time to have the program improving, not going the opposite way. He needs to go.

The team last year was an absolute embarrasement – and will probably be worse this year. What in the world do people see that makes them believe Joker can get the job done. I’ve seen nothing.

And even those bowl games while Brooks was hear didn’t mean much since they only came w/ a greatly watered down schedule and a plethora of bottom feeder bowls. If Bill Curry had had the same schedule and bowl line up – he would have gone every year as well.

    28. Trying to, but there are so many apologists for Joker and Mitch I seriously doubt things will ever change. Ostrich fans are the real problem… they think if they ignore it and ‘support the program’ it might get better. Ya, right. The administration won’t do a thing until it completely collapses, which it will not do if people continue to fund failure.

njcat) I disagree. With the schedule like it is this year, I see us (sadly) winning 4 or less. My guess is you head-hunters will have what you want by the end of the year. But I won’t take responsibility when we can’t get anyone better and our program really tanks.

    30. What in the world can you show as evidence that Joker has what it takes to get the team to .500 in the SEC? (and I think getting blown out by Vandy cancels out the narrow win at home over a terrible Tennessee team.)

Mitch didn’t get the bball thing right until it collapsed.. and it will be the same for football. He accepts mediocrity(or worse) because the cash is rolling in. When that stops it will get his attention because it will impact the budget for his precious water polo and volleyball teams.

any player that comes to KY should do so w/ their eyes wide open. the program stinks and will continue to w/ or w/o them until the administration gets its act together. They’d be better off at another school where they won’t have to deal w/ so many embarrasing losses.
