Kentucky is No. 4 in The Sporting News‘s preseason Top 25

A day after releasing its All-American teams — featuring Alex Poythress (Second Team All-American/All-Freshman) and Nerlens Noel (All-Freshman) — The Sporting News released its preseason college basketball Top 25 rankings.

Check out the top 10…

1. Indiana
2. Louisville
3. Ohio State

4. Kentucky

With Kentucky, the thing to do is trust that coach John Calipari has attracted enough talent to replace the truckload that just left of the program. It’s also safe to assume he will find the correct formula to mix the players he has gathered into a championship contender. It’s conceivable the Wildcats eventually will hit a snag, and if ever that’s going to happen, it’s now, with a point guard in Ryan Harrow who never was considered an elite prospect. But who’s betting against them? – Mike DeCourcy

5. Michigan
6. Duke
7. Syracuse
8. Arizona
9. NC State
10. Missouri

Way too High one Duke and Ohio St. Way to Low on UNC, and UF. Too high on Kansas, UCLA eligible players to questionable.

I laughed at the fact that in the Wildcat Coal Lodge tour vid on CoachCal.com, you saw Poythress and I think Goodwin coming back from the practice facility and John Hood was just sitting reclined in the lounge area, with a bag of fast food that they had to blur out…lol. Now as I understand it he’s not injured still, right? Dude needs to be working.

    7) You’re right, Rivals had him as a 5-star. Not sure why DeCourcy would put it like that…

UNC is the #3 school in their state?! I’m loving that. Even better, we get a crack at the Dukies this year. K has ducked us long enough…now he can’t hide. I just wish we could play them in December after having a little more practice for the freshmen.

“with a point guard in Ryan Harrow who never was considered an elite prospect” – are you kidding me?

Ranked 19th overall… thats not elite?

I was an elite pg prospect in a class that was ripe with ’em. DeCourcy just needed a tag line…it’s ok, Mr. Doubting Thomas.

WHAT?! LOUISVILLE SHOULD BE #1, NOT #2! PEYTON SIVA IS GOING TO SURPRISE A LOT OF PEOPLE THIS YEAR! NOT TO MENTION WE HAVE THE BEST GAME COACH IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL. COACH CAL HAS ONLY ONE THE PAST 3 YEARS BECAUSE OF TALENT.

I don’t know if it’s just an anomaly with the Sporting News, or a fundamental shift in the landscape of college basketball, but this Top 25 is rife with unusual suspects…Creighton, San Diego State, UNLV, Murray State, VCU…Still the normal crop at the top of the rankings, but the second and third tier major conference teams that usually fill out the rankings seem to be non-existent. Should be a fun season.

That being said…I STILL think UofL is overrated, despite what they did last year. I think their high ranking is more a benefit of an overall weak field as opposed to being that strong of a team…Looking at what teams have coming back and coming in, it looks like it’ll basically be UK, Indiana, Ohio State/Michigan, Louisville, and everybody else.

I do think this a little high for this point in the season. We Definatly will be a contender by March. I think Duke is way to high, but that will be rectified after we beat their a$$ off. All you can ask for is to be a contender Cal has done that for sure. It takes a lot of breaks to win it all all the coach can do is put them in a position for success.
#9 I hate to admitt it but w e have ducked Duke. Coach K wanted a series home and home but Tubby refused. He said his team was to young. I think coach K interest changed however when Cal came on board.

I tend to agree with #12, even though he’s an obvious troll. IU and UL should be switched. IU is a one trick pony, beyond Zeller they have a bunch of marginally talented over achievers. We’ll see, but I suspect by then end of the season IU won’t be in the top 10. Also, I’m not particularly impressed with Harry Potter’s coaching.

Lou has FF experience, a quality front court in Behannan and Dieng, with the possibility of having another good big man in Mathiang. Siva is a great PG if he doesn’t get shut down by a defender with a size advantage that can keep up with him… Blackshear would be in the NBA this year had he been with UK last year.. let’s see how he does under Pitino. Russ Smith is an enigma, but if Nunez and/or Ware actually develop, Lou could be scary good. This year is Lou’s best chance to win a title.

That said, I hope they lose very game.

Well I wish the sportsbook would have them fourth. They are currently in the lead @ 13 to 2 to win. Meanwhile Ohio State is 20 to 1. Rrrr

I think #4 is about right to start the season even though we were never ranked below #3 at any point all of last season. By the end of conference play, we’ll be right were we need to be.

Hope you all share this sentiment with me, here are my thoughts about this upcoming year.

    1. I’ve been so uptight about winning a national championship these last few years, I’m very relieved now. I feel like I can sit back and enjoy Kentucky basketball more this year now that we have won a recent title.

    2. Things have gone WAY too well for us the past three years. We have avoided the injury bug, and our “down” year we went to the final four. I am preparing myself for our luck to catch up with us a bit this year…and I’m ok with that.

    3. I am also tempering my expectation of this team this year. While I think Cal is finding out he can be more picky, and avoid some of the guys who may get our program in trouble, the odds of him getting another group of freshman to play as well as they did last year are very low. Don’t forget we’ve always had a good upperclassman (who’s been playing at UK) to guide us. My point is…lets just enjoy this team, and not set unrealistic expectations this year. We will always be sad when UK loses, but don’t let a final four or championship be the expectation for every year, it’s just not realistic.
