Kentucky is No. 19 in the Pomeroy rankings

Who needs the AP and USA Today Coaches polls when Ken Pomeroy is churning out magic with his KenPom rankings?  Yeah, Kentucky is unranked in the two polls that matter on television, but in Pomeroy’s enchanting world of numbers, Kentucky is the 19th ranked team in the country.  19th sounds much better than NR, if you ask me.

Pomeroy uses formulas and statistics that are way above my head to assemble his Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings for all 347 teams.  The rankings were updated yesterday and Kentucky is just ahead of Ole Miss in that 19th spot.  Florida, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan and Duke make up the top five.

Ken Pomeroy gets it.

All I can say is if there are only 18 teams better than this UK team then it is a horrendous year for college basketball.

Pomeroy must do the “Bottom Ten”listings, because UK is no where near a top 25 team.Maybe he means top 19 collection of individuals because UK is not a team.

Pomeroy just lost all credibility for his joke of a poll. 19th hahahahah, obviously he doesn’t watch basketball.

are pomeroy’s rankings used in any way when determining which teams play in march?

Is “gets it” an inside joke or reference to something on the radio show. It’s really fricking annoyingly overused on this site

11….Sort of. The NCAA committee does get those rankings as part of their supplemental materials. Tho Ken seems to feel that most do NOT use the information.

Having said that Kenpom has been doing rankings for the past 10 years. In those 10 years, teams that were ranked in his Top 20 (200 teams) failed to make the tourny only TWICE. South Carolina in 06 (rated 15th) and UGA in 03 (rated 18th).

So if UK does finish in the Top 20 in KP, that’s usually a good sign.

Pomeroy rankings are basically based on points per possession and opponents points per possession. He then factors in strength of schedule obviously.

It’s very similar to in baseball using Runs Scored and Runs Allowed to predict how good a team is instead of using just win/loss record.

It’s been proved to be more accurate of future success than just wins/losses.

No system is perfect. And 19th might be high for us. But this system is light years better than RPI.

Tell kenpom to reboot, do a defrag and a virus scan.

Did Pomeroy see the team that was able to make ONE basket in a 12 minute stretch?

Too bad that the NCAA couldn’t care less about Pomeroy.

Comments like 16 crack me up. “Ain’t no place fer yer fancy formulas and math books in this here game.” Makes total sense, let’s all ignore empirical evidence and rely on the likes of Jeff Goodman, Seth Davis, Gary Parrish, etc to tell us who’s good and who isn’t. Brilliant. It’s SO intelligent to dismiss something you don’t understand.

The only problem is that a month ago Kentucky was #12 in the same ratings. So the Double A show of Archie and Alex continue to pull us down.

Love the picture; #10 Coach told me to pass the ball to the open man when I drive. #12 Right! I would throw myself on the floor and start crying if that ever happens!

#19 – I’m glad it cracked you up since it was a joke, fool. Although, I will choose to ignore all this “empirical evidence” (who are you, john nash?) and go with what I see, and what I see is you with no empirical evidence of a sense of humor and this team that is CLEARLY NOT the 19th best team in the nation. Nice try you geek.
