Kentucky goes to the White House LIVE THREAD

In mere moments, the Cats will stand in the White House with President Obama and be honored for their National Championship. Use this thread to dissect and discuss every little second of the big event.

You can watch coverage of the ceremony on ESPNU, ESPN3, WatchESPN, and The White House’s live feed starting at 4:50 p.m. EDT.

KSR’s special White House correspondent, Kellen Clemons, is with the media and will tweet pictures as well as provide a recap tonight or tomorrow. Follow him at @KeThCl.

The players and coaches aren’t allowed to tweet until the ceremony is over, so stick with KSR for complete coverage. And please, keep it civil. This isn’t about politics, it’s about honoring the accomplishments of this amazing team. Let’s enjoy this moment fourteen years in the making.

Leggo…

Is this softball game the kind of torture Al Qaeda was forced to watch? If so, I really feel for those guys. And the national media would have you believe that these student-athletes are the same as big time football or basketball players…

The ESPN stream was great. Loved the cheers from the crowd. I wonder if a team ever got that much enthusiasm at the whitehouse before?

I wonder if Eloy told the president he would pass him the ball like that. That could have gone bad.

It aired on the White House feed. Started about 5 p.m. and is over now.

The guys looked really happy. Some of them nervous. Obama said he’s learned in four years of filling out brackets as President that if he’s right, it’s great, and if he’s wrong, the winning team gets to come into his house and rub his nose in it. 🙂
Eloy Vargas was supposed to hand him a signed basketball, I’m sure, and tossed it instead. Obama didn’t seem to mind, but I think Cal would have yanked Vargas out of the game right then, if he could have.
Miller gave the President a jersey with Miller’s No. 1 on it and Obama on the back. Davis gave the President a national championship ring, a first, Cal said.
Obama told Davis he’d visited his high school once, four years ago, and Davis said yes, that he was there that day, too. So it’s Davis’ 2nd time with the President.
A hundred, maybe two hundred people there to witness ceremony. Wonder who they were? I did see Bob-Somebody, the Superfan old man who’s attended I don’t know how many Kentucky games. Cal’s wife and son were there.
Obama mentioned that they might get one of the guys headed to the NBA in DC with the Wizards and would happily take them. Congratulated Miller and Vargas on graduating on Sunday.

Okay, saw it on the ESPN feed now

The President made a motion with his hands and nodded his head to Vargas. He wanted him to throw the ball.

Cal didn’t see that part, had his back turned, and he probably just about had a heart attack. 🙂 Grabbed Vargas by the arm as if to say, Don’t do anything else like that in front of the President.
Davis did one of those quickie handshake, hug-like shoulder bumps that kid athletes do with the President. Looked comfortable as could be. Is Davis ever nervous? Late Nite TV and jokes and now the President? Nothing phases him.

Cal was visibly nervous. And that was a great pass by Vargas… The president motioned for it.

After deftly handling Eloy’s pass, the Prez brought it up as if he were going to shoot it… Good thing he didn’t…Anthony Davis would have BLOCKED it!
